Stumbled upon this little store on Water Street and loved it. The store name is an acronym for Newfoundland Outport Nursing and Industrial Association. They sell beautiful hand knit sweaters, hats, mittens, scarves and more for babies, children, men and women. The quality and variety is amazing. Everything is made by hand by Newfoundlanders. The sweaters reminded me of the beautiful ones my grandmother made. I bought some warm mittens as gifts to take back home. The mittens were "thrummed" which makes them soft, thick, and warm! Go buy some!

This is the place if you are looking for handknitted soft and touching goods for babies, children adults etc. Small, but beautiful. Creative work at its best. It may cost a little bit more, but hello, not made in Far East, but made at home !

I was determined to come home with a hand knit wool sweater from my trip back to my birthplace, and Nonia's did not disappoint. They had a marvelous selection of sweaters, cardigan and pull over, different knit patterns and colors. The staff was most helpful getting the proper fit and style for my body type, also color most suitable for my skin tone. I expected to pay practically a king's ransom for something hand made, and was surprised at the very reasonable asking price. This is an item that will last a lifetime.

I was searching for a particular item and unable to find it at any of the shops in downtown St. John's. I asked the lovely lady at Nonia if she had ever seen Newfoundland created and produced Jelly Bean Row note cards. She told me Nonia did not carry them but if anyone would, Irene's on Water Street would be the place. She was right of course! Irene's had exactly what I was looking for. Now that is what I call excellent customer service. Whenever I am in St. John's in the future Nonia will be on my shopping route for sure!
