We have just spent 3 nights at The Jellybean Heritage House. Our room
“Come By Chance” was very comfortable & clean.
Each day Housekeeping came in to make our bed , clean & leave fresh towels- Thankyou Jeff!
We knew we were going to have a continental Breakfast , however were disappointed with the quantity & variety. We had to ask for the cheese & meat tray to be replenished as well as coffee to be refilled.
On the 2nd morning nothing was laid out as well as the hired help did not arrive. We along with other guests went into the kitchen, made coffee, washed fruit & laid out cheese , salami & bread.To say the least, this was very shocking to all of us to have to do this!
Our last morning, a minimal amount of cheese & salami was set out & coffee made but no one in sight to replenish the food or coffee so once again had to fend for ourselves…..
Fortunately we knew where more dishes were as there were not enough set out for all the guests.
Given this experience, we would recommend instructions left on how to operate the coffee grinder & Ninja coffeemaker! Also, boiled eggs would have been a welcome addition.

Colorful row of buildings. Was great to see this in person after seeing only pictures of it. However, one of the buildings badly needed painted. I know this is tough times with Covid but I would have thought such an icon of Newfoundland would have been better maintained. Still definitely worth going to see though!

We stayed in St Johns in a jellybean house downtown. (airbnb) It was a perfect location to visit the towns many restaurants, bars, The Rooms, the Battery, Qidi Vidi, Bannerman Park etc.
Will definitely visit again.

You’re in St John’s - so of course you need to see the jellybean houses. Previous reviews of them made me think they were just on one street, however they are nicely spread out throughout most of downtown. Walk around and get the requisite jellybean house photos! Very easy to find

It’s been said that the human eye can see over 10 million colours. You may not see 10 million different colours in St. John’s, but you will certainly see a wild and wonderful palate of glorious colour through this city.
Every advertising medium for St John’s uses tantalising images of the vibrantly-coloured row houses which give the city its unique character. The scenes are captivating, alluring, drawing you to the city. It’s the sole reason I wanted to visit St. John’s. And the reality does actually measures up to the hype. Jelly Bean Row really is a must-see visual phenomenon, and seeking out this unusual ‘attraction’ with its odd, clashing, vibrant, dazzling rainbow colour scheme has to be one of the top items on many a visitor’s ‘to do’ list.
But there isn’t a street called Jellybean Row. It’s not a street at all; these lollypop -coloured houses are everywhere you go. But the problem is this: when you only have a limited amount of time in St. John’s, and you want to do some photography in a street or an area where the concentration of colours is intense, where’s the best area to go? I got a bit tired of the standard response (“Oh they’re everywhere!”), and reviews here don’t answer that question. So I was grateful for a really helpful local who works at the JAG Hotel where we were staying, who gave some really helpful suggestions as to where to spend our time. So I’m sharing the walk we did here, as it was a perfect spot for seeing the Jellybean Row houses at their most colourful best. It will take you a couple of hours.
We walked eastward along Livingstone Street (from the top of Carters Hill Place), then turning right into Long Hill, then around Constabulary Court into Gower Street. Gower Street literally explodes in colour; practically every house is a visual treat. We continued east on Gower, exploring the hilly cross streets (Victoria, Prescott, Flavin, Kings, and Colonial) and some of the short parallel streets such as Prospect and York. We continued east almost to the end of Gower. This was a perfect walk for us! And I hope these locations help you in your search for a good location for the houses.
I loved the clashes: green with orange trim; yellow with purple touches, candy pink with bright blue. The colours are bold, unusually matched (or usually mismatched). The sun was shining when we visited, and it really made the colours explode. It’s a startling visual treat. The colours are whimsical, and novel, breathtakingly beautiful as a wider picture.
The tradition actually began in the late 1970s as a way to inject new life into a declining downtown area. The ‘bright’ idea caught on, and the palate has spread, creating a St. John’s landscape which people want to see, and go out of their way to see.
Best viewed in brilliant sunshine, but lovely in any weather, the scenes of these vibrantly coloured houses will lift your spirits. They will put a smile on your face, and have your camera working overtime. And I guarantee it will have you singing: “I can sing a rainbow, Sing a rainbow...”

There is a tourism office on Water Street in St. John's. We walked around town using the map and the locals are always there to help. The jellybean row houses are something unique to St. John's. There are lots of hills and it is often windy so dress in layers and enjoy the scenery and the awesome people from Newfoundland.

The architecture of NFLD is very diverse and the story of Jellybean row houses is a story of of the 1892 fire that destroyed the town - the town need to rebuild quickly as winter was coming....

Colourful, clashing and great in the sunshine. Worth a visit. The town itself is very steep, especially from the cruise pier. Be warned. Located on a horseshoe bay, the sail has a typical Canadian pioneer feel with single storey, brightly painted homes dotted amongst the cliffs. Ashore, there is a good selection of souvenir shops but the Main Street soon runs into a highway with adjoining blocks feeling like an outback town. Great to meet Newfoundland dogs on the quayside. Like walking, deep pile carpets!

As previously stated, there isn't one street but I found the best area was anywhere around Gower Street and Victoria or Gower and Prescott. Start there and you won't be disappointed.

One of the most interesting things about St. John's is the number of brightly coloured houses in the downtown, mostly heritage, area. There are many explanations as to why there are so many houses painted in a rainbow of colours, but for those of us who live there, it is home, and we are glad to be able to share the joy of this palate of colour with those who come to visit us. I suspect the actual creation of the phrase "Jellybean Row" can be laid at the feet of some really clever marketing folks! If you come to St. John's, actually, I mean, when you come to St. John's, don't worry about finding a specific location - just enjoy the sights you see, and wonder why no one else has done such a great job of brightening up ones home town.

We booked a trip to St. John’s NFLD for August. We have a place to stay in on Jelly Bean Row. What is it like to walk around there? Many things to do close by?

One important thing is to wear walking shoes with good traction. you will be going up and down steep hills, and sometimes the pavement is a bit slippery when it rains. Go for comfort and safety, not style. Also, if you are older like me, allow plenty of time to walk up the hills--don't make yourself sick! But other than that, St. John's is wonderful for walking.

Is it true? Are ALL of these houses now gone? I've never been to Newfoundland but it's on my list for the next couple years. This area was the biggest drawing card.
