Easy drive from St. John's, up a winding road. It was very windy the day we went and because it was only late May, the tower was closed. We could see Fort Amherst far below, which you can also drive to. It was marvelous to think of the history that occurred in that place. Beautiful views as others have noted, but be sure to check opening dates so you won't be disappointed.

This is a recent tower built to commemorate the Venetian Zuan Caboto who "discovered" the island (after the farmer and fisherman from Scandinavia, Portugal, North Spain, etc.
Towering the Signal hill, it is visible from great distance. Conversely the views of the town, the ocean and Cape spear are exceptional. Historically it is the place which received the world first radio signal, from Marconi on the other side of the Atlantic in Cornwall.

The Cabot tower is a special place, as a national historic sight on top of a large hill facing out on the Atlantic ocean its a truly magnificent place to go, relax and reflect. There are also many hiking trails which can get you closer to the water, and you have an astounding view of the eastern most point in North America (Cape Spear.)

There is a fantastic view of the ocean & cliffs from the area around Cabot Tower. There also are some interesting exhibits about the history of the area. If you like hiking, there looks to be some nice hiking trails terminating here. The tower has a gift shop in the bottom floor & a lookout from the top.

The views from Signal Hill are even better from the rooftop viewing area.
The amateur radio station is interesting, great to see old school still in use.

Unfortunately, with all the people, we didn't spend a lot of time visiting the tower itself. We did walk up to the observation platform and took advantage of the views, but didn't take the time to read about the history. There seemed to be a Parks Canada (or perhaps a local student) who was manning a radio station, which looked neat. But he never looked up or acknowledged anyone, so we never got to find out what he was doing. The tower is a great starting off point for the nearby trails, which are the highlight of Signal Hill.

This tower is an amazing place that has a rich history. You can learn about this in their museum located within the tower. A gift shop that closes at 9:00pm is also located in the tower.

You can walk here from downtown St. John's from water street. It is a hard walk up hill but wow the sites are astounding. It really is something to see I highly recommend going 1st to battery village, then walk to signal hill and end your day walking to quidi vidi brewery and village with a meal at the famous restaurant in that town!

I remember my mother walking up the stairs to the tower. Inside are narrow stairs that go to the second floor. Museum inside.

I'm interested in walking the hiking trail that leads from Cabot Tower to the Battery and back. Is there a cost to entering the vicinity? Is the trail walkable for independent hikers or difficult to navigate? Thanks in advance!

There's no cost and isn't too difficult.
