Please stop here they are wonderful people and a nice short stop. They are all volunteers and are passionate about their history. You can even get a picture behind bars! They only take donations and ask that you sign their guest book. Very easy to find when getting off cruise ship.

This is an excellent place visit to see how this police force has changed over the years with many displays and even an old cell door. There is even a restored Volkswagen Bug that was used as an actual police car and was displayed by Volkswagen in a brochure for the bug.

While visiting Saint Johns on a cruise, my wife and I visited the Police Museum. They had a nice display of uniforms and police equipment. The museum is one large room with there displays and photographs. The museum is manned by volunteers. We are both retired police officers, so we like to show our support for other departments when we are able. There is even a VW Beetle that was used a patrol car out front. Entry is free, requesting a donation.

Did they say FREE? On our walk around town from our cruise ship, we found this great little museum ran by volunteers. Enjoyed the displays and enjoyed the conversation with the two ladies. If you are an officer, bring in a patch and they will trade.

You can easily miss this compact but very interesting museum. We found it by accident, walking from the port. It is housed in the basement of a much larger building and outside we found two vintage police cars and after photographing them, went into the museum which is free of charge. It is run by retired men and women of the Saint John Police Force and gives a detailed and very interesting history of that force, since its establishment in 1849. There are several interesting exhibits from uniforms, truncheons, hand cuffs and more police equipment to historic photographs and even a jail cell, barred door section. Look for the photograph of the police officer who served until he was in his 80s! He strikes a ready for anything pose. Looking at the photographs and exhibits tends to highlight the difficult job that the early force in St John had, particularly in dealing with differences between the early Catholic and Protestant settlers. It is a museum, well set up and run by retired police volunteers, who are at hand to relate the history and to answer any questions. It is free entry but relies on donations and a box for those is provided. An interesting venue, well worth a visit.

So good to see something that is not over commercially ruined. A great little museum giving information all about the history of the St. John police dept. There are cheerful and knowledgeable volunteers who can impart interesting stories of characters and events in the cities past. Couple this with many artefacts from over the years and the great little VW Beetle police car and you have a really good way to spend an hour. The museum is located about a ten minute walk from the cruise terminal and just opposite Barbours tea store/museum near to the carved statues of people.

The VW Beetle Police car caught our eye. There was a person dressed like a 19th century bobbie outside and we turned around to see that it was the Police Museum. The free museum contains police artifacts from the start of the police force. Interesting seeing an old balance scale used to weight drugs. There is also a display of illegal weapons that have been confiscated over the years. There are lots of photographs and a few old uniforms. Liked the old log book listing equipment provided to an officer through his career. There is even a small gift shop.

A very different and interesting museum.

We wanted to check out the police museum because my grandfather was a police officer. They had an old police car (vw bug) out front with a man in an old bobby uniform. Inside they had lots of old uniforms, photos, patches and other memorabilia, an old switch board, lots of interesting weapons and contraband that had been confiscated over the years. The best part about this museum was the volunteers, many of which had been police officers for decades. They were extremely kind and knowledgeable. When my grandmother got emotional they were very sweet with her and I'm sure she will always remember the visit. Free to enter but donations accepted. Note: The inside is not wheelchair accessible, there are about 5 steep stairs to climb down to enter.

Looks like a neat place to visit; however, it was unfortunately closed on the day we went. Apparently part-time and ran by retired Saint John police officers when open (typically when cruise ships are in port). That’s understandable and we plan to stop by on our next visit to SJ

Not a great deal to do in St John really but this quirky little Police Museum has some interesting artefacts and stories to review. Very friendly staff and all it asks for is a donation. Worth popping in for sure.
