The area
Neighborhood: Stanley Park
Stanley Park is Vancouver's premier spot to get up close and personal with nature and animals. The grassy expanse offers outdoor teahouses and stunning views, beachfront hideaways and splash parks. It is a typical getaway spot for friends and families, especially as it is home to Vancouver's aquarium, and some of its best equestrian outlets.

Described by Vancouver’s Best Places as “an impressive beach,” Third Beach is located along the western shore of Stanley Park. Because it is part of the Seawall system, the beach is accessible via walking or vehicle. If you choose to drive, limited parking is available at the Third Beach (pay) parking lot. Once here, bask in the sun, swim in the ocean, or just take a break from the hurly burly of contemporary living.

As I was visiting during Fall, the beach was mostly empty save for a couple of treasure hunters. I have to agree with an earlier review: I found Third Beach to be “Nothing outstanding.” It’s a beach – a small one. I imagine it can get quite crowded on hot summer days and that’s not appealing for anybody. I don’t know. Maybe I’m just spoiled after having patronized the beaches of Tofino, Hawaii and Haida Gwaii.

On the plus side, Third Beach is very close to the Stanley Park Teahouse; thus, one can have a delightful meal here after a sojourn at this ho-hum beach.

Below the path and stairs lies Third Beach. In all honesty, the terrain changes very little from Second Beach to Third Beach. But for our purposes, we did discover this stretch while visiting E. Pauline Johnson's memorial while out on a walk-about.

You make do in life with what you have. Our favorite beaches have water temperatures way in excess of 75 degrees F. and are not peppered with logs and are replete with white sand.

Appreciate the differences and celebrate them!

Very small beach on the seawall facing the ocean. It offers commanding views to the mountain and out to sea. It does seem to have lots of seaweed.

Third Beach, between Ferguson Point and Siwash Rock in Stanley Park on the park's west side, is a pleasant and popular beach. Third Beach offer incomparable vistas and it boasts the best sunsets too. Stanley Park is within easy walking distance of downtown Vancouver.

Third Beach is one of the best beaches in Vancouver. There's a bike path that goes all the way around Stanley Park so you can easily cycle to third beach and lock up at the bike park, or bring your bike on the beach. The cycling path is either above the seawall, or cuts right through the beach on the seawall. It's an easy incline for swimming and there's a lifeguard on duty from May to September. Another interesting feature of the beaches in Vancouver are the logs that are placed intermittently throughout the beach. This allows sun worshippers a place to sit or lean up against a log, and offers some privacy as well.

This beach has a concession stand, change rooms and public washrooms. Oh course there is plenty of pay parking for those that will drive. But it's much better if you walk or ride through the park to get the full effect of the forest and ocean smells and views. Leave the car at home.

Lots of places to sit, on logs. Even if cold lovely to view from the sea wall walk. Lovely spot to watch the sea wildlife.

Third Beach is a little bit off of the beaten path, but definitely worth a visit. It is gorgeous. When I was there it seemed to be more popular with locals than tourists, so had a somewhat different feel from some of the other beaches. It is another amazing place to watch a Vancouver sunset!

Fav beach in Stanley park - nicer than English Bay but, about a 1.5 km walk into the park from English Bay. Just love to sit and stare at the N. Shore mountains.

Great views of the surrounding environment and also a great walk. Lots of people there on the weekends in the summer. If it's summer you might want to do the walk during the week, when most people are at work. It's also a great place to walk your dog.

The extra effort that it takes to get to this stretch of heaven in downtown Vancouver is absolutely worth the effort. With the best water of any other beach in the Lower Mainland, you can sit back, relax and people watch or enjoy the view of the north shore all day long.
