Henry's carving shed is a West Coast authentic workshop, with a small community of hard working wood carvers. We are always at work, greeting people from everywhere and demonstrating the ancient art form of carving with hand tools. Artwork can be bought or commissioned on site and we can organize shipping. We are situated right on the exceptional Chesterman's Beach in Tofino, on the North end, next to the famous Wickaninnish Inn

Visiting the Carving Shed and getting to meet local master wood carver, George Yearsly (aka Feather George), was one of the highlights of our trip to Tofino. George creates beautiful feather carvings from red and yellow cedar. His distinctive ability to carve such fine quality is also seen in his cedar boxes that are inlayed with shells and semi precious... More

It was very neat to learn about Henry Nolla, the man who used to surf naked. He was so talented that he did all the stunning wood work at the Wickannish Inn.

Many surfaces of the interior of the Wickaninnish Inn are carved with a repeating calming pattern - so much so one wonders "Who did all this?" Wander down to the Carving Shed to see and chat. There are some very unique and beautiful boxes to buy as a memory.

The shack is just that but we met Christen a talented Norwegian carver who now calls Tofino home and had a nice chat with him. There is local history here which is interesting and it is located on one of the areas loveliest beaches Chesterman.

Interesting to see a bit of local history as Henry was instrumental in creating much of the woodwork for the Wickaninnish Inn. He was an artist and wood carver and this shed honours his legacy by featuring the work of "Feather George" and invited younger local artists. Watch, chat and learn, as they carve and create.

The carving shed is right next to "The Wick" on the beach. George is an amazing host and oh so talented and authentic! We came in for a short look around and over 3 hours later, we found we could have spent all day! I promised George that we would be back with photos from my cycling trip to the... More

We were delighted to find Henry's Carving Shed on our walk on Chesterton Beach. Had a wonderful conversation with George Yearling, the resident carver that day. He was working on some ofhis lovely carved feathers. The place has atmosphere and nothing for sale!! I am sure you can purchase the art at the nearby Wickannish Inn, though! Worth looking for... Sits on the edge of Wikaninnish Inn grounds and is an interesting place to wonder through as you amble along the beach. Some great art has come out of this place and there is a bit of a chronology of the life of Henry. Worth stopping in for a couple minutes. On nice days, the artist in residence works out... More
