This was an incredible experience! Doug and his team have a well oiled operation that really delivered! I don't easily spend $588 a day for entertainment, but even before we arrived in the sanctuary, my wife and I had already decided that there was no...More

These folks have resumed bears from around the state. Great place to see them up close in a natural environment. One of the better tours we did while in Alaska.

Well worth the trouble and expense to get here. We took the boat that cruises the coast. We saw numerous grizzlies, not to mention orcas, humpbacks and eagles on the way. Unforgettable!

Firstly, this is a place not a tour. Tours should be reviewed separately. There are tours to it but it is first and foremost a place. An incredible place. A wilderness sanctuary for bears and other wildlife. Over the years the bears have become used to...More

We had an amazing experience on this tour, to say the least! I had read reviews prior to deciding on this excursion, but i really didn't grasp how close to the bears we would actually get or how exhilarating it would be! The passion, knowledge...More

There are hundreds of reviews that attest to this being a great excursion in Prince Rupert, and I agree. What struck me on top of that, was the passion and knowledge evident in every crew member, from the boat's Cheif engineer, to every crew member...More

Hi! I stayed 2 nights at Khutzeymateen Wilderness Lodge :) I did not regret a second. Of course there's a chance you might not see any bears, but the tranquility and the scenery is amazing anyway.

Vancouver Island or Prince Rupert? (2 Replies)
Hi Everyone, My husband and I (in our 30s) will be visiting BC/Alberta in late May. After spending a week in the Rockies, we have another week to spend on the BC coastline. We are tossing up between Prince Rupert and Vancouver Island. We are most interested in seeing whales and bears and beautiful scenery. If we went to Prince Rupert, we would do a 2 night stay with Palmerville Adventures in the Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary. Is there anything comparable on Vancouver...More

<<We're looking for something remote but within reach of comforts, restaurants...so Vancouver Island may be a bit more suitable??>> No truly 'remote' place is within reach of restaurants-not unless you have a bush plane or helicopter standing by. If it's Bears and ocean life you want Prince Rupert & environs is the place for you.

Hi, just wondering if anyone can tell me whether it's necessary to book this in advance during high season? I'm hoping this will be a real highlight of our trip, but I'm also aware that it's weather-dependent so ideally we will decide the day before if we don't need to pre book too far ahead. Thanks in advance.

I have never been to the Khutzeymateen but have visited a number of other grizzly bear viewing areas. As most of these areas limit the number of visitors to help protect the bears, key dates during the peak season often sell out over a year in advance. I would say book the tour now if you can and just plan on it raining and dress appropriately.

Some one just posted a really detailed summary of their stay in Prince Rupert, so have a look at that. If you are going in to the Khutzeymateen and not staying in PR for long, then that might work for you. I'd vote for the north island, but just because I think they are better set up for tourists. I haven't been to Prince Rupert, so I can't compare them for you. Look for posts by Kingfisherkayaking for some terrific info on that area.
