About
Prince Rupert Adventure Tours will show you the most stunning and magnificent displays of wildlife in and around B.C.’s sheltered Northern Inside Passage. Our grizzly bear tours in the Khutzeymateen Valley provide an opportunity to see these legendary giants in their natural environment! Our goal is to provide you with a safe and unique wilderness experience, without altering the natural behaviour of these creatures. Join our whale watching tour later in the season to experience the greatest show on Earth! North Coast whale watching is acknowledged as one of the most accessible and predictable locations to see whales. You may encounter grey whales feeding around enormous kelp beds, humpback whales flashing their unique tails as they dive to feed, orca whales following the migrating salmon, or porpoises playfully gliding alongside the boat. Stellar sea lions, harbour seals, eagles, blue herons and sea otters may also make an appearance. Climb aboard for the adventure of a lifetime!

This was an incredible journey with an incredible staff. The boat holds about a 100 people but there were only 30 on this trip so there was lots of room to move around on the boat. The staff makes it clear at the beginning of the tour that
the outside areas of the boat are for everybody and to not hog one place for too long. This resulted in everybody moving around the boat and having an equal amount of time to see the whales. I found this a very efficient way of "people managing".
At the beginning of the tour before departure the staff gives a very quick safety briefing and then we head out to sea. Almost all of the time of the tour is spent on the boat and on the ocean so I felt like it was very good value for money. We did see whales, but not too many and honestly it didn't even matter. We could have seen no whales; the trip was so beautiful it was absolutely worth the money. At frequent spots along the tour one of the hosts gets on a microphone and explains certain points of interest as we passed them. This information was always very interesting and I never felt that they were droning on. You can tell that it is the captain's and 1st mate's absolute priority to find whales as they spend a lot of the trip looking at their sonar and looking through binoculars for signs of the creatures. That was very much appreciated I could tell they all really wanted us to have a good time.
They do have light snacks on board like chips, chocolate bars, pop, beer, and wine for sale, but you are also allowed to bring your own food and drinks. I reccomend doing this, because we got quite hungry from all the excitement. Luckily we brought food! You are not allowed to bring your own alcohol on board because of their liquid licence policy. I found the alcohol VERY expensive, at $7/beer and $11/glass of wine. I didn't drink and didn't want to, I just thought it was worth mentioning. Someone lit up a smoke on the back of the boat. They asked if anyone minded and everyone said no, but someone still went and complained forcing them to make an announcement that smoking was not allowed. I don't smoke, but what a buzz kill. The area is open to the air and you're moving at a pretty good clip, so I didn't quite understand that one.
Overall it was an incredible experience and the staff are all just totally amazing. If you have the money, don't even think about it, just book it!

This was by far one of the best and most memorable tours we have ever taken! It well exceeded our expectations providing astonishing views of wildlife from a very close distance. We saw many grizzly bears, including a mama bear with 3 cubs and 2 bears fighting. We also got a close up view of whales and eagles. The boat and staff were wonderful. The large boat was very modern, comfortable, with several decks, indoor and outdoor seating and a lot of room for everyone to move around and take pictures. The bathrooms in the boat were also very clean. This tour was well worth the money spent and we greatly recommend it. You may want to bring a good quality camera with a zoom lens for the pictures, but if you do not have one, the captain also takes high quality photos, which he shares with passengers free of charge.

Fantastic day trip to see the grizzly bears in the wild. Boat was very comfortable and spacious so that everyone got great views of the bears. Staff very friendly and knowledgeable.....would highly recommend this trip to anyone visiting Prince Rupert. The captain tried his very best to let us see a whale but unfortunately it didn't happen.

The experience was truly once in a lifetime, to see grizzly bears in the wild on their turf. The weather could have been better, and maybe we would have seen more bears, but if I was a bear I wouldn't have been out in a thunderstorm so we were fortunate to see a few. The boat was so comfortable, with many viewing areas. The staff were all so knowledgeable and helpful, sharing a wealth of information. We were fortunate to see some humpbacks feeding and the bald eagle show at the end was phenomenal. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone who finds themselves in the Prince Rupert area. You won't regret it! Thankyou for an amazing day.

What a treat! I'm so glad I found this tour online, as their brochures were out of print. The vessel was comfortable, the staff were superb, and a number of grizzlies turned up for us. Even though the weather was rainy, the scenery was just stunning, and the bald eagles put on a breathtaking display.
Bring your longest camera lens (binoculars are available on board), layer well (inside is heated), and dress for cold wind and rain and spray.

One of our favorite parts was seeing 8 grizzlies digging for clams, strutting around and climbing a low lying branch. The wildlife was totally uninterested with the vessel.
The staff was very friendly and informative. Our tour was supposed to be 7 hours but then we saw 2 pods of orca whales and bald eagles and our tour was extended to 8 hours. Amazing tour!!!

Right from the moment we got on the boat it was very clear this crew and company were very professional. Informative, and patient, we saw lots of whales and the weather was fabulous. Comfortable boat with plenty of options for observing.
Thank you we will definately do it again someday.

We have done whale watching tours before and have had varied success in finding whales. In some of these tours we have seen a few whale backs but no flukes and no breaching. In one, we saw no whales at all. This tour, while it started out slow, hit the jackpot. At first I was thinking we were going to be skunked as the boat travelled quickly for an hour and a half from port. I wondered if we would spend all the time speeding out and back. But, no, the Captain knew exactly where to go to find the whales in a spot they knew whales feed. While we did not see any breaching, we spent over an hour just watching about six humpbacks loading up on krill in a "meeting of the waters" location betwixt some islands. Many flukes were shown and some of the guides were able to identify them by the fluke markings. What I particularly noticed this time was how graceful these gentle giants are. I've not ever seen two whales dive and show their flukes next to each other but did this time. I wish I'd had my camera ready. At the end of the tour, the best pictures were shared with all who had Apple devices by Air Drop. Unfortunately, no one had caught the tandem dive pic! The boat was very comfortable and we were fortunate to have a smooth day with little wave action.

Couldn’t recommend this tour highly enough.
The experience is a total one - off and we were lucky to see 6 grizzlies.
The crew and office staff to a person were very professional and knowledgable.
If you are in BC well worth basing part of your holiday around the Port Hardy - Prince Rupert ferry voyage and then taking this tour.
Truly 2 world class experiences.

This was an excellent 4 full hours filled with beautiful scenery and we had the most amazing 60-90 minutes of watching the whales with the captain doing an amazing job of finding and following the whales maximizing everyone’s view of this amazing sight.
Thank you for a wonderful afternoon.
Would definitely recommend anyone to do this tour.

I am visiting Prince Rupert on the 20th and 21st of September. Will the day tour still take place then for the bears and how far in advance do I need to book/ how much per person in CAD? Is it a good trip to see Orcas also or would that be a different trip?
Written February 21, 2020
The Grizzly Bear boat tours only run mid-May through end-July. The Whale Watching boat tours run August and September. We saw Humpback Wales (a lot of them), Stellar Sea Lions and Harbour Seals - no Orcas. Not sure of 2020 prices - appears to be lots of room on tours at this time (I looked at the booking calendar) - go to Prince Rupert Adventure Tours for booking and fees.

Hi,
I'm interested in the grizzly boat tour but would like to see them close up (as possible as that is without intruding on their space), can anyone tell me if you get to see the bears ok from the boat or do you need binoculars to be able to see them?
Thanks in advance, any replies would be really helpful.

Hello Mariannelouisemac
Thank you for your inquiry.
The Grizzly Bears come to the seashore in the early part of the summer (mid May - end of July) to dig for clams and mussels and to feed on the protein rich sedge grass.
The opportunity to see them up close is dependant on the tide and where they are located in the Inlet. We get as close as possible without disturbing them. We hope you decide to join us.
