Great place to explore for an hour or two. Cool trails, lots of driftwood, and Shack Island is amazing. Must go at low tide but when the tide comes in, it comes in fast!!!

I really appreciate the beautiful photos and positive commentary people have posted here about Shack Island. As a 4th generation resident, I would like to assure everyone that all the cabins (not really shacks) are owned, maintained and used in the summer by descendants of the original Nanaimo fishermen who build them in the 30s - 50s. We're pleased to keep this colourful bit of local history alive, and welcome respectful visitors to walk or kayak around the islands.

Piper's Lagoon is a small, shallow bay into which the tide rushes and exits twice a day. Because it is so shallow, on a sunny day the water is very warm, so wading with little ones is fun. If you are a swimmer, come here on low tide and wait for the incoming tide. Get in the water at the entrance to the lagoon, dive in and swim hard to the middle as the tide swishes and swirls you into the Lagoon. Swim to the shore, get out, and repeat.
There's two place to park -- one near the water's entrance to the lagoon, and one on the protective peninsula to the south. The peninsula is a good place for beach combing and roaming through the oak trees.

I have been here a few times on holiday and it is a great walk!
Especially if you have dogs, our dogs loved the walk and met other dogs on the trail! Very good if you fancy a stroll along a trail near the ocean.

Pipers Lagoon is my favourite beach in the Nanaimo area. In the March herring roe cover the beach and the waters are full over wildlife - seals, sea lions, otters. In the summer, you can wade or swim.

We went with a family of three, the little one is 18 months old. loved touching the water and walk along the shore.
The weather was great, so it makes the photos captivating.
Recommend people not walking bare foot as the ground is filled with shells that are sharp, otherwise it is a great place to spend the afternoon.

I always enjoy walking along the beach. It can be quite busy on the weekends but is still worth the drive.

Does anyone know when in the tide phase you can ride the tide at Pipers Lagoon?
Thanks! M
Written August 11, 2015
Yes, you can ride the in-coming tide at Piper's 's channel. It is an exhilarating experience akin to swimming down a horizontal waterfall. Be aware that you should be a strong swimmer or wear a life jacket. Be sure to go with others in case you have any problems. There are no lifeguards in attendance. To get to the channel, drive down Lagoon Drive off of Hammond Bay road until you reach the water. There are several parking spots, there. Do not go down Place Road to the park. Be sure to look at a tide chart to determine when there is a n coming tide. Have fun! But, be safe!
