We stopped in to watch the 8 minute movie about the Dempster Highway, if you're planning to drive it, then try to fit it in before you go.

The night we arrived in Dawson, there had been a tanker truck wreck up on the Dempster, the Hwy was closed. Our purpose was to go to Tuk. Found this place and they even called up to Eagle Plains (near the wreck) to get the most current info on the clean up. We were able to get the info and adjust our trip accordingly so we could head up the Hwy in a couple of days. We made an excursion to Fairbanks -Top of the World Hwy- and returned to take the Dempster. Unfortunately when we returned the office was closed for the season, so unable to thank them.

The lady working while we visited was so nice. She let us try on an arctic parka they had for display. It was interesting to see artifacts and we were given a pass booklet where we could collect stamps along the highway. It didn't take a long time to visit the centre, but they had all the info you could want.

We spent some time in here talking about all sorts of things including our planned trip up the Dempster. There is lots of information available about the road conditions and the weather for driving the dempster, but they also provided information about money, banking, availability of ice, petrol etc. In a quiet time, we were also able to have a chat about other aspects of life in the area which was great and also managed to get our hands on up to date camping and visitor guides for the NWT which we hadn’t seen anywhere else in BC or the Yukon. Well worth a stop if you have any questions at all about travel in NWT.

The Inuit at the desk was very helpful and encouraging. She spent a lot of time giving us information about the Dempster Hwy--all of which turned out to be spot on. Hours are 9 to 5 with an hour break sometime in midday for lunch.

Located right across from the Dawson City Visitor Centre, this is a mandatory stop if you’re taking the Dempster Highway to Tombstone Park, stopping near Eagle Plains, going to Inuvik and right up to Tuktayuktuk. We stopped at all of those places.
The most useful info they had was current updates from travellers who had very recently driven the highway. They also had you watch a short video, parts of which were outdated but that was also helpful. They had limited brochures. The one person there was very helpful. They gave us information about a mudslide and the road conditions they described were pretty accurate.
That highway is a definite tire killer as we saw 3 vehicles pulled over changing tires. We also had a puncture but we were luckily able to get to Inuvik to get the tire repaired as we had double tires on each side of the rear. Come here if you are driving up the Dempster!

This is a must for all travelling the Dempster. The staff are very knowledgeable and can give the latest road and weather conditions. Take in the short film it is a bit dated but has info.
