We were on a tour bus and they were driving us around and made a quick stop. Dredge is cool to see but at that time we weren't able to go on the dredge. Also the buckets off the dredge are no longer attached and just sitting on the shore - but you can stand next to them and get a better picture of how large they were. Worth a quick stop.

The restoration of #4 Dredge is still ongoing but what a fantastic example of the ingenuity, extraordinary foresight and struggles of the brave and pioneering spirit of those early settlers and fortune seekers. We visited this as part of a tour with Klondike Experience whom we highly recommend to anyone thinking of visiting Dawson.

I learned so much about the placer mining process during the tour. I am a real visual learner and the tour leader turned out to be exceptional at her job - particularly when using her arms and hands to replicate moving parts of the massive machinery! Her descriptions and explanations were terrific and that it made it easy to imagine how all the people and machinery would have performed during the peak gold rush years. I really came away with knowledge regarding this type of mining that will stay with me for a long time.

You get up close and personal inside the dredge and all the equipment is inside. If you like old iron, this tour is for you.

Talk of the Klondike gold rush triggers images of lonely filthy men panning for a few flecks of the precious metal at the turn of the 20th century. This method though was hugely inefficient and all too soon the process of automation took over. Many enormous dredges - basic machines that chewed up tonnes of soil and rock every day and extracted the gold - were soon working their way across the landscape east of Dawson. Dredge No 4 - the largest ever built - has been restored and for a mere $20 Canadian you can spent an hour inside this leviathan marvelling at the technology, guided at each step by a knowledgeable guide. I really cannot recommend this highly enough.

It is a 25 minute drive to get to but well worth the trip. It boggles my mind how the miners of the day must have toiled to get this massive machine up into the Yukon in the first place. Take the time to see this sight and enjoy the tour as well.

Dredge No. 4 is an absolute must-see for anyone wanting to understand the extent we go to pull resources from the Earth. Dredging completely destroys the creeks through which these massive barges move, digging everything up and pumping out impressively symmetrical tailings behind them as they move.

Dredge No. 4 was the largest of its kind ever built. It's like a sideways apartment building in size. Though no longer a Parks Canada-run site, there's a fantastic array of signage on site that explains everything about the mechanics of dredging and the history of the region's gold industry. This a great thing, because now the site is run by a tour company that isn't on its game with customer service.

We were told conflicting details about when tours were starting, and every time we kept showing up, no one was there. This was a disappointment. They also tried getting us to pay the entry fee (a steep $15 per person), but then that they wouldn't be running tours for an hour. This is frustrating given that the site is so far from Dawson City that it's difficult to constantly kill time. After waiting 90 minutes and reading all of Parks Canada's wonderful signage, we left. We didn't get inside, which was too bad, but sometimes customer service dampens the experience.

Very interesting tour of the dredge. Our guide explained how each part of the dredge operated and worked together to extract gold from the ground.

Walking through the dredge showed just how enormous it is.

Worth visiting.
