We went with some of our grandchildren for an afternoon at the Vedder River along Rotary Trail. At this time of year this is one of the best things you can share with kids as they see first hand the cycle of life for some of our magnificent salmon.

Weather you are walking, jogging, bike riding; this is a great trail. It is flat and goes along the Vedder river for miles.

Any and all parts of this growing trail system are spectacular! For a short jaunt or a long trek there are so many options --- and the scenery changes so much throughout the seasons. Make sure when you park your car in any of the many lots that you lock your car and don't leave anything visible.

This level River walk curls along the Vedder River - some call it the Chilliwack River😉.
For a nice afternoon walk or bicycle ride, Park at the Blue Heron Reserve. First check out the hundreds of tree top Heron, and a few eagle nests in May, then cycle along the trail into Chilliwack...or the other direction towards Yarrow.
From the. Blue Heron Reserve it's 6 kilometers to the new bridge and then a couple of blocks north to coffee shops or cafes for snacks or a brew.
Watch for pedestrians, berry pickers and other cyclists as the growing developments nearby make this a popular trail. Berries ripen in stages...first the salmon berries, then the choke cherries, wild raspberries, and lastly the invasive species, the wild black berries.
The enduring fascination remains the river, always rushing, changeable from week to week depending on the rainfalls and glacier melting in spring leaving the river always cold. You may see some late summer rafting or kayaking. Early spring is for more skilled kayakers. The river attracts fishermen from everywhere. Stop and chat to to find what fish is in season, or check out the catch up close.

We extended our ride on the Rotary Trail to include the Mckay Creek & South Vedder dyke trails. By far, the Rotary Trail was the most scenic & interesting part of the ride. It is well maintained, with numerous benches along the route for those who may want to stop & enjoy the view. Perfect trail for families! It is flat, with many opportunities for the kids to explore. There is also a virtual tour. Be sure to make time to visit the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve. Our blog features some photos of the trail: http://discoveroutdoors.blogspot.ca/2015/03/urban-mushing-and-steelhead-fishin.html

Vedder River Trail is 15.5 km of the most wonderful walking experience you can imagine. The river is absolutely one of BCs finest and most beautiful - crystal clear waters, great views, super easy walking, great access. Walking, biking, horse back - accessible to some wheelchairs. Vedder Road from Highway 1 to Vedder Crossing a short distance from Chilliwack Lake. Lots of parking if driving. We walked from the Vedder River Inn adding a half hour to the walk and stayed on the trail for approx 5 km then returned via some new subdivisions. Next time we will do much more if not all of the trail. Access can be from numerous roads and streets. Point of interest is the Great Blue Heron Reserve - bring headphones for an audio tour (trail talker)
This guaranteed to please and is an easy walk etc for children.

The Vedder Rotary trail is an easy walk or bike ride. I would recommend visiting between to months of July to September if you wish to avoid the rainy parts of the year. The views of the snow topped mountains in the winter are also spectacular. In September and October you can watch the fishermen casting for salmon along the river. The trail is well maintained and has toilet facilities along the route.
