In Jasper National Park, there are many trails. But not so many in the Jasper town area. But there is one that’s nice, The Discovery Trail. This is a long trail that encircles the town. Branching off of the trail are other trails that go off into the forest for varying distances. The Discovery Trail begins just off the back of the Hotel parking lot. We took it. Actually it was better than I anticipated. I thought it would be a rather flat trail just off various parking lots. Nope. The Trail went further back into the hillside than I anticipated. Actually in places out of sight of town. And there was more elevation change (both up and down) than expected. A really nice trail.

Easy trail that circles Jasper. The trail portion on the Bench provides great views of Jasper and good photo opportunities. Often see Red Headed Woodpeckers, Elk and deer. Careful, as cougars are known to roam the Bench as do the occasional bear and wolf. Lots of trails branch off this trail each one is worth hiking as well. Respect the wildlife and other hikers by keeping your dogs on a leash.

We walked 10 km of Discovery trail around Jasper as part of a Volkssport walk. Not sure what the actual trail is in length. We had special instructions but it is not that clearly marked for the average tourist. There are some steep inclines as you walk the foot of steep hills on the north side of Jasper. A nice walk to get a feel for the lay out of Jasper and the elk on the trail were a bonus.

A big part of this trail is on the side of a hill that backs onto the parking lots of hotels and the backyards of townhouses - not very scenic. A lot of the interpretive panels are missing, so I didn’t “discover” that much. I wish I would have used my limited time in Jasper to do a real hike outside of town.

Great trail discovering Jasper as you go along, the old train and the totem pole as the trail loops around the town. Just follow the Bear signs. You can do as much or as little as you want so suitable for all abilities.

After hiking some spectacular places during our week in Jasper National Park, the Discovery Trail isn't much to write home about. It is simply a loop trail around the town. You can pick up this trail from just about anywhere in town and do as little or as much as you want. The entire trail is about 8 km (4+ miles) and has little elevation. We picked up the trail at the train station and followed it out of then back into town. (Overall, we probably did about half of the entire trail). The section of trail along the railroad tracks is paved, and you'll experience other walkers and plenty of bicyclers. Once it crosses Connaught Street past the hotels, it becomes a dirt trail - and we did not see anyone else on the trail. Not much to see along the way. There are some signs, kiosks and markers at spots along the trail that give some history and information about the area.

Trail is rated as easy but it's certainly not flat, the route takes you up into the hills on one side of town. The signage is really good and there are several other interconnecting trails that you can take if you want to extend your walk. There are some information boards as you go round to explain some of the history and background of the town. A nice way to spend a morning!

An interesting way to learn about Jasper. Great to be able to get out & about and away from the often expensive & busy tourist attractions. Unfortunately I still managed to get lost as I think some signage may have been missing.

Walk around Jasper was disrupted by a territorial mother elk that had recently given birth. Tied with the story of a local bike rider that was also attacked by a bear while we were there but was saved when the bear bit into his bear spray canister thus blinding both the bear and rider and saving the rider from more extensive injury made it all the more interesting! An excellent way to end a day of adventure in this jewel of Canada.

We only actually did half of the trail looking at the side by the railway on Connaught Avenue as it was an extremely hot day - even though it was the end of September.. The boards were very interesting to read and to get geographical bearings from. What a lovely place Jasper is!!
