About
Walterdale Theatre, at over 60 years old, is one of Western Canada’s oldest amateur theatre groups. With the exception of a paid part-time Administrator, Walterdale Theatre is operated entirely by volunteers with a love of theatre. Members of any age and background have the unique opportunity to participate in all aspects of live theatre. We do it for love, not money.

You will note I did not say amateur theatre. Although this theatre company is comprised of volunteer cast and crew, they most NT very professional productions.

Walterdale produces a season of five productions along with new works.

The sets, the costumes, lighting and sound all add to some very talented actors.

The theatre is very intimate and seats about 115. The stage is curved with the audience looking down towards the stage.

Highly recommend you taking in a very inexpensive night of excellent entertainment.

This was my first time at the Walterdale and I was enamored by the fire hall look outside and the curved wall in the lobby. The curved wall is of course the outside wall of the theatre so all the seats point to the centre of the stage. The seats were cushioned and the leg room was a little snug so I recommend filling in the centre of the rows first.

The lobby is a bit small but it had it's own charm as well. The concession was selling hot, cold, and alcoholic beverages, as well as chocolate bars, twizzlers and mints. It was a chilly evening so we opted for tea.

My friend and I saw Lady Windermere's Fan. It is an Oscar Wilde classic and was very well done. The costumes were regal and elegant. The set was very well put together to make scene changes simple.

It was a lovely play and the Walterdale does sell season tickets so if you are a thespian and don't necessarily want to pay for the larger theatre's pricing then this is a great location for a cheaper evening of entertainment.

One of the oldest volunteer-run community theatres in Canada, Walterdale produces high-quality theatre at a very reasonable price in a lovely historic building. At the heart of Old Strathcona's theatre district you'll find excellent pre-and post-show dinner and drinks within walking distance.
Locals with a flair for the dramatic should consider volunteering - there's something for everyone!
