I was exploring downtown a few days ago and wanted to see if the extensive +15 elevated pedestrian bridges were open. It was hit and miss. The bridges near City Hall seemed to be closed, but those near the CORE shopping area seemed to be open, but I was there during the week. Even before the COVID troubles, many of the bridges were being closed on weekends, so I would guess almost all of them would be closed Saturdays and Sundays. It's a shame, since as a system, it is a world-class innovation. But Calgary's downtown has been ailing for quite some time, long before the COVID situation, and the +15's have not been what they used to be for a long while... sad...

If you visit cities with comparable downtown mix of offices and retail to those found in Calgary you will likely find more interesting streets. In Calgary so many shops, restaurants and services are located on the +15 that the downtown is sterile at street level.

This is a thing that makes the street level services crap that is used to get to and from the office in the winter and maybe if you hate the outdoors in the summer. This is not something you want to go out of your way to see.

The plus 15 Walkways are a great way of getting around in Calgary when the weather is not nice, cold, windy or wet. We have used them for years.

Unique walkway above streets of Calgary. Easy to find ways in and exits. Very clean and signposted very well. Full of little shops mainly eateries and coffee shops. Had open safe and friendly feel. Great way to explore city in both rain and sunshine!

When it is incredibly cold, use the +15 walkway to get around the Calgary downtown. My wife and I walked inside on the elevated walkway from the Olympic Plaza to our hotel at the Fairmont Palliser. It was -29 outside! There are maps as you pass through the various walkways, but there needs to be more signs so you know where you are at all times. It is convenient as it joins many buildings in the downtown area. I have a concern about which walkways are accessible on weekends. I ran up a set of stairs near the Calgary Tower, but the doors to the +15 were locked.
The maps found on the internet, as well as paper maps are very difficult to navigate with. Could someone make the maps easier to follow?

If it's raining but you still want to visit downtown Calgary, Walking through the miles of interconnecting Skywalks is a great way to do it. The "+15" as us down here in Cow Town call it (15 feet above the street level is the story I was told) connects you to parks and restaurants as well as shopping. You can get to the Devonian Gardens - a wonderful inside garden park and check out the "Painted Cows" along the +15 by the City of Calgary parking garage.

In the Calgary CBD you can move around the area using the +15. These are climate controlled corridors that help you move between buildings and are best used in winter (although i have used them through out summer thus far as its heaps quicker than on the ground

You can travel miles using the +15's, there are umpteen coffee shops and food courts that can be accessed by +15's, in winter it's a wonderful way to get around downtown.
The shopping is incredible, everything from, Holt's designer to the Bay.
I worked in the Oil Patch, many companies, and hotels can be accessed using this network.
Just be aware of where you are, and you can get around just fine. It's safe and reliable, keep in mind some places are locked after 6pm.

I would describe the +15 network as the worlds biggest gerbil run!
Being a resident of London (UK) where we think we have a cold winter, where we all struggle along in the persistant rain and driving hail, where the city planners dont care if we get soaked and frozen. This design idea is second to none! The +15 is a series of covered walkways/covered bridges between many of the large buildings in the downtown core of Calgary. Having been in a snow storm in May whilst in Calgary these things are a god send, you simply look for the little blue signs and in you go, it seems wierd to us Londoners to walk into a building you dont work in and use the lift, but its like a hidden city above the streets.
They tubes interconnect some car parks to shopping centres to restaurants to places of work. So in bad weather you can drive your warm car into a warm car park, then walk through the heated tunnels into a building. This saves you from having to go outside if you plan your trip!
My one word of caution would be to not over dress when in the system as on a warm spring day it can get hot in the system with alot of people moving about
