With more than 200 exhibits and attractions spread over 127 acres of lush parkland, Heritage Park Historical Village has a lot to offer both the history buff and the pleasure seeker. It’s the perfect balance between historical fact, adventure, discovery and fun that makes our take on the tale of Western Canada’s history so unique. Tour the Park on an antique steam train, set sail aboard Calgary's only paddlewheel ship, visit the farm animals at the ranch, learn about Blackfoot culture in the First Nations area, engage with Western Canada’s energy past, present and future at Prospect Ridge, explore a bustling young prairie town and discover one of the world’s largest public collections of antique vehicles at Gasoline Alley Museum. The Historical Village is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. from the May long weekend until the first weekend in September, then open weekends until mid-October. Gasoline Alley Museum is open year-round.

The park itself is beautiful, especially with the autumn colors. Most docents are friendly and knowledgeable, especially the lovely ladies in houses which have working stoves. They were eager to share their knowledge on how to cook on these and we were happy to listen and learn. The train and grain elevator docents we encountered were less than friendly and unapproachable - not what you want in a family park.
Our experience at the Selkirk Grille was one of the worst I've ever had a restaurant; we were ignored, didn't receive service and when we expressed our frustration we were mocked and treated horrendously by a person named Ralph. I was shocked that someone who wasn't in a management position felt it was his job to argue with us and laugh when we tried to explain the total lack of service. Eventually a person named Mitch tried to rectify the situation and we appreciated this as he was the only staff member who was good at his job. Ralph's response is unacceptable in the service industry - I will make sure to let my friends and family know to avoid this restaurant completely.

What can I say about this place that has not already been said. It captures what like was like in the early history of Calgary and Alberta. The amount of work that goes it the restoration and maintenance amazes me. It is a testament to those that want future generations to know what early life in the Alberta was like.

I was really impressed with how well the park is responsibly managing covid-19. The boys went on the Ferris Wheel and it was cleaned and each car was cleaned and sanitized quickly after each set of people left. Same thing riding the train. The hand rails were wiped down really quickly to make the ride enjoyable and safe.

My family and I came for the Christmas activities including the horse drawn carriage ride. Prices are reasonable and I was able to get a buy one get one 50% off coupon. There are a lot of cool historical buildings and activities. You can learn a lot about Alberta’s history here. I can’t wait to visit in the summer!

We are so happy you were able to experience Once Upon a Christmas! You are correct - our event is likely the best valued Christmas event in Calgary!
See you in the summer!

Oh my heavens I learnt so much! From speaking to First Nations staff and learning about their lives and history, looking at how the RCMP have evolved, the way the oil and gas industry affects things... Even just down to the truly lovely staff who were more than happy to just stand and chat with us.
As a couple, plan on about 6 hrs there. If you take kids, write the day off as there is LOTS to see.

Heritage park is a ideal place to take your family or loved one. So much to see and do. Love the heritage it tells, feels like you were actually living during that time. Makes you realize what our ancestors went through. Enjoy and make sure you go this summer and enjoy!

It's been 40 years since I've been to Heritage Park, and it has blossomed into a fun, educational visit for the entire family. From the moment you enter the gates, you sense the effort put into recreating the events and people who shaped today's Calgary and environs.
The Gasoline Alley Museum is extraordinary, and it's hard to believe that most vehicles are from one person's (Mr Ron Carey) private collection! I had the opportunity to talk to one of the volunteers, and his excitement about working was palpable.
Walking into the Heritage Park village is a journey of discovery, with the beautiful Glenmore Reservoir, the paddlewheel SS Moyie, a spooking coal mine, and the warden's hut. The employees, with their friendly and engaging nature, make you feel like a part of the history. It would have been even more enriching if some of them had a backstory for their role at a particular exhibit.
Any young child would awed by the feeling of walking along Front Street in the old town of Heritage Park. I was that kid many years ago, and the wonder of it hasn't faded.
Well worth the trip!

Heritage Park offers the opportunity to experience life as it was in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including a full village with several shops (post office, school, farm, etc) equipped with original items as they were back in those days. It also has a small amusement park, a full sized steam train and a steam boat which can get very crowded by lineups, though they are a nice experience.
Overall, it is a great place to spend a beautiful summer day in Calgary, especially for families with young children.

A very good place for a day out and family freindly. Lots of parking but you have to pay to park. Admission fee reasonable and lots to see and do. We walked around the site and taked with a few of the guides who explained what the exhibuts were about. A very good history lesson on the aerly pioneers of this vast region. Styaed almost to closing time. Only one disappointment was that the staem locomotive was not running due to the water shortage in Calgary at the time due to the main water pipe being broken. All water saving measures were being applied. We ll woth a visit.

The park and all the displays are fabulous, but if you have allergies, the park does not support them. Bring your food should you be attending the park. I contacted the park regarding allergies, and they said they would never entertain supporting allergies at any food venues. This is so sad because Allergies are rising and should be considered.

We are staying in Lake Louise in August and wondered if it is worth visiting on our way back to the airport for a late afternoon flight (so need to be at the airport around 3pm), or would that be too much of as rush?
Written January 30, 2020
In order to get the full experience of Heritage park it would be best if you spent an entire day there.

I don’t know for sure. It was so interesting with so much to do that we never took our phones out, but the square outside the village, the Gasoline Alley and restaurants are not set in time period. We used our phones in the parking lot so I’d assume you can connect.

Written July 26, 2019
The park will be opened in these dates but apparently there are no special exhibitions
Written July 26, 2019
There are cash machines available at the park entrance. But your better off getting some cash before you get to the park.

Would this be interesting for 10/11/12 year old kids?
Written April 10, 2019
The park is great for children of all ages. i would suggest doing a pre visit look online at what is available and letting the children pick what they might be interested in. After that you can choose your favourite spots to visit. I always find if they choose then they feel the trip is always better. The bakery is a must and sample the goods there too. The farm house always smells good as something is always baking there and the kids can see how their bedroom might have looked back many years ago, The resevoir is fun on the boat and the park has many interessting spots to stop. Have fun as I know you will.
