    Best Zoo Visit in Memory
My family had a day on the ground in Calgary following a tour of more remote places in the Rockies, so I asked a Canadian friend what to do. His first recommendation was the Zoo, and it’s hard to fault. This is one of the best zoos we have been to, and it takes a while to see it all, so give yourself time. While it’s not open plan, the animals have space, and all appear very healthy and active. The enclosures allow good viewing, and zoo employees and volunteers always seem to be on hand to provide facts about the animals—both as species and individuals. The zoo is split into geographical sections—Canada, Asia, Africa, etc—with a separate penguin facility. Being Australian, we’d seen plenty of penguins, some in the wild, and a lot in zoos. Why go halfway to the wrong pole to see birds native to Australian, New Zealand, and other Southern Hemisphere coastlines or waters? But Calgary’s penguin facility was better than anything we’d seen in Australia or New Zealand—climate controlled, and very up-close, with staff on hand to control visitor conduct and ensure the birds’ safety. It was the first exhibit we went through, and we went through again at the end. A definite highlight. It was also great to get up close to some of the large mammals we had seen only from a distance or not at all in the wild in Canada—polar bears, brown bears, black bears, wolves and cougars. All the advice we’d received was that we didn’t want to see a cougar in the wild, and we weren’t that keen on bears or wolves either. The zoo put us literally within meters of them. There are also some great aviaries. There are also a few places to eat, with a good selection of food. We were there for hours. They don’t let you in within an hour of closing time (5PM), but my advice is to give yourself three or four hours to take it all in.

The zoo is a great activity for any age. There are certain days of the month they do the penguin walk, you can review on their website before hand. The zoo is huge with different themed sections to explore. You can literally spend all day there exploring if you want.

    Splendid !
From the splendour of the Rocky Mountains to the heart of Destination Africa, the zoo houses over 1,000 animals worldwide. Here are some highlights: African Rainforest: Trek through this area to see the gorilla troop. African Savannah: Safari over this region to watch the Hippo's swim. Canadian Wilds: Climb to see grizzly bears. Penguin Plunge: Cool off and observe four species of penguins. Exploration Asia: Visit endangered red pandas and Amur tigers. Dorothy Harvie Gardens: Wind down your trip with a fragrant garden walk. ENMAX Conservatory: Sit with the butterflies (seasonal). Notably, every visit helps protect endangered animals at home and in the wild. The zoo also features the unique and immersive Gateway to Asia building, which includes Komodo dragons, white-handed gibbons, and a Malayan tapir.

A Fun Day at the Zoo
We took our granddaughter to the Calgary Zoo for her first visit. She absolutely loved it. The highlight was definitely the giraffe’s and the hippopotamus’ as they were quite active compared to the other animals who were busy napping. Unfortunately the penguin exhibit was closed which was a bit of a bummer. I would definitely return in the future.

    Polar Bears are incredible
Attended the Polar Bear special event night. Absolutely amazing to experience. Firstly a private viewing at 5PM to see the astounding new enclosures with is plunge pools, water cooled rocks and cold showers that the bears activate by standing on a sensor pad. Then a really good 4-course gourmet meal, cash bar and 3 excellent presentations. I learned so many incredible things about our largest land mammals.. The size of these bears (1,100 lbs) and their height standing (over 10 feet) is incredible to see up close. We will do this again, as there are so many fun facts to learn. Thanks to our amazing zoo, and to Baffin and Siku.

    Zoo
Having walked around the Calgary Zoo, I was impressed by its organization and variety of animals. From huge giraffes to cute penguins, you can meet representatives from different continents here. Each animal lives in conditions as close as possible to their natural habitat, which creates a favorable atmosphere for observation and learning. There were also interesting educational activities that make the visit even more exciting for all ages. The Calgary Zoo is the perfect place to spend a day with family or friends.

What a great place for everyone. Staff very helpful and friendly. You can bring lunch in or you can buy it there. Lots to see. Lots of different parks for kids to play at. So parents need to read the signs that this park is for 3 to 5 year olds.

    Wild adventure.
This is a great place to visit, the addition of the polar bears is a must see. You can spend a couple of hours or all day, this is a well laid out zoo, with plenty to see and do. We used it to fill in the time after hotel checkout to Airport check-in as we had a late flight. It's location was great for that as it is on the outskirts toward the Airport.

    Amazing zoo adventure
This was one of the best zoo trips I’ve had. The animals were out and about the temperature was about 18 degrees that day. Arrived between 1-3 and was able to watch the animals get fed, that definitely attracted them so close to fences for some amazing pictures. Highly recommend visiting and checking out the new Polar bear exhibit

    Fun!
I was travelling with my 17 y/o nephew. I was a bit worried that my cool teen would find the zoo lame or boring. Not at all, we had a blast, we stayed there 5 hours. Walked, talked, laughed, and enjoyed seeing all the animals. The zoo is beautiful, easy to navigate, the animals look happy and healthy, the staff was amazing. Excellent and fun way to spend the day in Calgary.

We have 2 small children so visiting the zoo of every city has become a ritual for us. The Calgary zoo is really well kept. The garden and flowers are beautiful in the summer. Washrooms are big and clean. The layout of the zoo is organized. There is a dinosaur park which is unique compared to zoo in other cities. This zoo isn't too big so you are able to finish the zoo in a day with extra time for lunch and free time for the kids at the playground. The butterfly garden is our favorite spot. Its filled with lots of different types of butterflies just fluttering around in the garden. If you're lucky a butterfly might just land on your hand. We highly recommend visiting the zoo for families with young children.

Yay! They have reopened the Zoo, but have changed things around a bit to make for social distancing. They only allow admission only by advance online timed purchase, so there are no "walk up" entries. Most of the animal displays and the flower conservatory that are indoors are closed. The penguins, gorillas, hippos and giraffes can go outside their indoor displays if they choose, but the could also stay inside if they want. But there are many outdoor animal exhibits that are excellent. There's a one-way walking route through the park to accommodate social distancing. Not all the toilets are open, but enough for the number of people allowed. Only the Kitamba Cafe is open for food. So there is a reduced offering at the Zoo, but all the kids I saw were thoroughly entertained. Especially sad is that the Pandas are gone because they were unable to acquire enough bamboo due to all the cancelled flights.

We went on a warm Sunday and it was great. Easy to flow through the zoo with new directional signage due to COVID and circles on the ground when you can stand to watch the animals for a longer period of time. Food options to purchase seemed limited but we brought our lunch so no issue for us. Plus we used our AMA card for a discount but that meant we had to purchase our tickets onsite. It made me nervous not to have timed tickets because I wasn’t sure if we would have to wait longer but we got there and after a brief wait in the line up to get in (mostly due to spacing protocol) we were able to pay and enter immediately. Everyone wore masks inside and except for 1 time everyone followed the directional signage. It took us roughly 4 hours to get through all areas (we skipped the dinosaurs) and spent extra time at the playground. Bugtopia was new for us and AMAZING!!!

The the zoo was good, we saw a lot of creatures but then lot of exhibits especially conservatory was closed due to some special event. Why did I pay full price then if half of the zoo is closed? Felt like we were jacked up. I wouldn't recommend it for visitors because it's a waste of money to travel to Calgary and go to a famous zoo and find out you can't see half the zoo even though you paid 35 dollars for each person.

I find it very stingy and inconvenient to charge for an admission to the zoo, and then another one for the zoo lights that take place in the zoo during the winter months, something like a bundle for both where you save 15%-20% would work better and the guests would not have to leave the premises to enter back again when the lights are turned on. The Lights spectacle has nothing note-worthy but since there's not a lot of things to do in the Calgary winter I guess it's worth the visit. The Axe throwing activity is AMAZING and is definitely the highlight of the visit to this activity.

Saw the Canadian Wild life exhibits, penguins, and some of Africa. Attentive informative volunteers in penguin enclosure. Saw meercats being individually fed. Animals generally visible for young children. Ranked 3 stars bc this cost $100 for senior and 2 children on a Sunday afternoon, which is very expensive AND then we we apparently also were to pay for parking. This makes the zoo completely out of reach for all but very well to do families.

The Calgary Zoo is a great place to visit with a family or as a couple. There is a huge variety of attractions to look at. My personal favorite is the Penguin Experience. You can get really close and personal with several species of Penguins. Watch for splashing! Yes you will have to wear a mask for any inside spaces. They also require you to sanitize your hands upon entry to all inside spaces. They have spray ready for you. Plenty of parking - $12.00 for the day. Entrance fee is $30 for adults. There is a AMA/AAA Discount available. Bring water and snacks if you don’t want to purchase food on the grounds. There are several place to eat if you like. Plus picnic tables. Lots of kids play spaces are open all over the park. The dinosaur portion is a very cool walk through prehistoric times.

In the age of diversity we rarely talk about animals in the zoo. I'm proud to be a member, and would always continue to support Calgary Zoo. Well run, clean, spacious, provides great facilities for animals, which look like they are treated quite well. And in turn, they seem to enjoy the attention they get from the many visitors that come here. Zoo lights are cool in the winter, when most animals are inside, tucked away from the bitter cold, but the summer is the best time to visit.

We have to drive 12 hrs just to see the penguins. This is our second visit. Last was May 2019. The rate this winter is cheaper not sure if because of covid restrictions or the rates really do change per season.

A lot of the attrations are closed but we feel envious of the locals who can buy annual passes and come there as they please. Kids enjoy the animals and the playground. Everyone there are masked and observed social distancing. It's as a good break from home confinement.

If you're traveling for shopping at the Crossiron Mills, make sure to visit Calgary Zoo with your kids!

As a family we visited in august 2023. We arrived when they opened, to make sure we didn’t get caught up in crowds and also because the day was set to be a scorcher at 35 degrees. We started with the penguins, which was worth the entry price alone! You can get up close to them, and we enjoyed getting splashed as they swim up close.
We walked around prehistoric park afterwards. We were all impressed with this. A great walk with animatronic dinosaurs and lots to read and learn.
We stopped for our packed lunch, then went round and saw the animals. The zoo doesn’t have hundreds of different animals, they seem to have fewer than other zoos I’ve been to, but they give large areas for the animals to live in. Obviously a good thing.
So if there’s a certain animal you are hoping to see, best check the website so you aren’t disappointed.

We were at the zoo about 4.5 hours in total, and ended the day with an ice cream from the shop, which was massive and a very fair price.
