There is a good reason why this is one of the most popular scrambles in the Rockies. It is so easily accessible, the trail is easy to follow, and the views are incomparable. Don't think that this is a simple stroll or walk. You need to be in good shape to climb Temple. And even then, it is not without serious challenges. Dangers include bears at night, rockfall from above, lower than expected temperature, and (of course) unprepared hikers. If you are well prepared and start your day early (I started at 4:50am), you are more likely to have a terrific experience here. Note that the parking lot is often closed due to high traffic later in the day.

Mount Temple in Alberta's Banff National Forest surrounds glacial lakes with mirrored surfaces reflecting all so beautifully you will wonder where it starts and ends. The only other place I remember something so stunning was the Lochs in Scotland. This is our Canadian Rockies a little more accessible.

You need to buy the Banff day pass to visit this area and parking is included.

What a mountain, Mount Temple !!Reaching its top - 3,543m, requires good preparations and pleasant weather. Understand the terrain, learn pathfinder skills and avoid hiking in bad weather.By law it is required to do this hike in a group of minimum four. It's a hard one but very rewarding.
Simply put, from Lake Moraine parking lot up to the Mount Temple top you need to hike 9 km with an elevation gain of 1,690m.
The views are stunning at every step you make. This is not a hike for amateurs.

We walked about 18 km's return distance on this scramble, achieving an elevation gain of just under 1700 m's. This summit is the highest in the Banff area, at 3543 m's above sea level. Although there was a big crowd at the top - perhaps 100 advanced scramblers summited this day - it is not for the novice or inexperienced. The 6 km approach to Sentinel Pass from Moraine Lake via Larch Valley is spectacular, and popular with many hikers. From Sentinel Pass, the going gets tougher, and the route becomes a true scramble. On the summit there are snow cornices, even in high summer. Never leave the trodden trail on the snow on the summit - this mountain has claimed lives in the past.

I like the mountains and views from the top! Thus, going up the Temple Mountain was a kind of must for me when I decided to go to Banff National Park. I was alone and because of bears you are expected to go up in groups of at least four people. I was happy to meet Krystyn, July and Richard from lake Louise on the parking at Morraine Lake who had exactly the same idea to go to the top :-) The first part takes you steeply up through the woods with just occasional views on Lake Morraine. After this first steep part, you enter Larch valley, with many flowers, larches and views on the ten peaks. It is some 30 minutes more to get to two nice lakes and to the Sentinel Pass. I would say, it is one third of your way up to the summit. To reach the summit, it is not difficult concerning climbing technique, there are just two places where you need to use your hands and these are not very difficult. However, altitude difference is huge, on gravel you have the feeling you go two steps up and one step sliding down, close to the summit you can also feel the air gets thinner and you start to go slower. On the top, we had a great whether with sunny sky and enjoyed a summit beer :-) Overall, I would say it takes you 4,5 hours up, 3 hours down, depending on how used you are to slide down on gravel.

Lake Louise is an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise, and is surrounded by some of the best hikes in Banff National Park As a visitor to Lake Louise me and my friends from Australia really did feel closer to nature.
