The main shopping/dining area of Banff Avenue was closed off to vehicles. Paid parking available about a 10 minute walk away and free parking at the train station (about 15 minute walk away). Enjoyed the Spirit of Christmas shop and the Rocky Mountain chocolate/candy shop. Several souvenir shops and some hiking/sporting goods stores. The Bay is the largest store in that area. Several restaurants in the area. There is a grocery store, liquor store, hardware store and small movie theatre just off of Banff Avenue as well. Lots of people out and about.

There is a bit of a conflict for me in the location of so much retail space within a National Park. History is what it is and we start from where we are. So attempting to set aside my conflict I can enjoy the beauty of the mountains and the luxury of those stores that I can afford to enjoy.
Busy, friendly, well stocked, lots of souvenirs and, if you want to reduce the amount of tat consumption in your life there is always the Rocky Mountain Soap company or the outstanding art gallery.

I am a frequent Banff visitor every year and I would always recommend Banff Ave as a must do. There is pretty much every kind of shop or restaurant that you could want or need. Of course there is a ton of cheesy gift shops but if you take an extra moment there are also a ton of local shops with unique items.

This year a couple things were different due to COVID but I think they have made it better. Masks are required inside the stores and on Banff avenue, this was something that was necessary as so many people were traveling to Banff from all over Alberta and Canada and when we first went during COVID there was little to no distancing being done or people voluntarily wearing masks. Main street is closed down to vehicle traffic for a section and I think this is something Banff should do every summer as it was wonderful!! There is extra outdoor patios and tents for the restaurants that allowed for more seating with distancing.

The patios all seemed to be dog friendly as well which is a great touch and quite a few stores seem to also allow well behaved dogs inside.

We were traveling and on our way home. We had planned to stop for a bite to eat.
We decided to park and walk in the beautiful fresh air-nope. That won't happen here! They will chase you down with tongs holding face masks in the 30°and yell and threaten to call bylaw if you don't submit. All the while walking past open street restaurants where the patrons aren't wearing masks.
Makes alot of sense. You can drink and eat in the open air that has a way higher chance of moist droplets spreading, but you cannot walk and breathe care free even if no one is around. I guess money talks?
Oh, and you must line up to use the washrooms, there's about 10 stalls open once inside, but only 2 of the sinks are open. So 8 of you will be packed like sardines waiting to wash your hands-what sense does that make?????
Unbelievable. We will never be back and will never spend a penny to support the ludicrous thinking.

Banff Ave has something for everyone. There are all types of shops (clothing, chocolate, soaps) and restaurants for even the picky eaters!
It does get very busy so I recommend going early. This will also allow you to find close parking. Parking is paid or free at the Train Station.
Great place to people watch

This is a busy road with plenty to see as you wander up and down, with the backdrop of stunning scenery. There are a good range of shops from plenty selling tourist tat (not that I have any objection to that!) to some much more high end - do look in the photo art gallery one as the work is seriously beautiful. There are also plenty of restaurants, cafes and bars - again, something for everyone. A few of the buildings are over 100 years old so look out for any plaques or information notices.

Several blocks of Banff Avenue downtown have been closed to cars and opened to pedestrians and outdoor attractions connected to local businesses. The hope is that downtown businesses can open extensions to their businesses there, serving more people without crowding them in like they used to. This new pedestrian zone didn't seem to be overrun, but all the other picnic areas and local city parks around it were quite busy. Parking is at a premium, but we found a spot after a bit of searching. It seems to be well thought out with the minor issue of washrooms. We didn't see any new temporary washroom areas, and while it's not glamorous to have such facilities, we think they make people more at ease when going into such zone, knowing you can stay a while without having to use the indoor washroom of a business. Still, glad to see they are now welcoming visitors in creative ways.

Banff is great for all sorts of winter or summer activities. But it is also amazing to just wander the street check out all the fun shops, stop at one of the many amazing restaurant or cafe or just sit on a bench and people watch.

Over the years I have really come fond of this small town and normally can pick up some unique gifts for upcoming holidays or my own home. No matter what time of year it is stop in at the Christmas store. I always find something.

There are some great places to walk right from which ever hotel you have chosen in the town. Walk over the river and see the gardens. They have a wonderful market as well!

I can promise you; you will not be bored.

Even in the winter this place is crowded. Lots of stores, restaurants and views of the mountains. Shopping can be really expensive or middle of the road. The restaurants are not cheap either but there are lots of choices. The winter the roads and sidewalks are not cleaned very well. Parking is free on the street but limited to 2 hours but read the signs as some areas are only 15 minutes. There are 4 storey parking lots behind Banff Ave.that are free also. You pay to enter the Park that is why seniors get a small discount 2 seniors $8.30 per person. Also children are free 17 years old and under. A car load all paying up to 7 people only $19.60, or $9.60 per person. Dress warm and have fun

Banff ave is a lovely stroll. Lots of souvenir shops, restaurants and specialty stores. Was disappointed that there were no artisan shops to be found, however they may have been located on the non main streets that are currently under major construction.
