Long road through the mountains and a trees. All very pretty. There are a number of viewpoints along the way, well worth the time to drive along it. It took us about 20 minutes, excluding stops

Tunnel Mountain Road has been greatly improved and upgraded. In the past, access around the entire mountain was limited and the road was in disrepair. Now it is in excellent condition and has a pedestrian walk from the top all the way into town. The road has the absolute best overlook of the Banff Springs Hotel. The various turnouts are well marked and new signage is very helpful. Don't miss the hoo-doos. They are best seen in the early morning or the evening when the sun hits them beautifully. There is wildlife too especially in the evening. And, no there really is no tunnel, someone changed their mind about that :) The road goes in a complete circle!

Tunnel Mountain Drive was a relatively short jaunt from the Hwy1 around Banff. There were elk grazing along the road and in a few different open areas. This is a 20-30 minute activity, even with time to hop out of the car for a few pictures.

This short drive almost feels like an extension of Banff. The surprising thing is that it feels very remote once you start heading up the hill, and the wildlife is abundant. We saw several groups of Bighorn Sheep. Some were very interested in licking the centerline of the road, so we could observe them up close from the car -- didn't seem to bother them at all. We also got to see some of the teenagers banging heads -- it almost gave me a headache just watching it!

The drive only goes half way up Tunnel Mt(there is no tunnel, the Mt was named because at one time the railroad was going to put a tunnel through the mountain). The parking area where the road ends gives a nice view of the town of Banff. I did not drive but hiked to the top of the mountain from Banff and would highly recommend it. The path has many switchbacks to the top and is well traveled so the footing is firm and well packed down. The one hour walk to the top is well worth it. With the view of the town of Banff in the valley below and surrounding snow covered mountains.

The long drive in the Rocky Mountains is exciting, the views "knock you out", the road is paved and in excellent shape, bonus to sight see in the car, worth the drive for fresh air...

This is a lovely scenic drive that you pick up right in Banff, stopping at Surprise Corner with a great view of the Banff Springs Hotel and Bow Falls below you. There is a nice little pull off on the left just past the Arts Center that offers a picture postcard view of Banff spread out below you. Definitely stop at the Hoodoos Trail, where you can wander up the hill for stupendous views for 20-30 minutes. Or more, if you want to sit on one of the benches and just drink in the views. The hoodoos are quite interesting, but practically irrelevant to the other scenery before you. This viewpoint gives you a panoramic perspective of the Banff area. You can see the Banff Springs Hotel in the distance, as well as the gondola building on top of Sulphur Mountain; Tunnel Mountain is right before you, and the river winds around far below you. Despite the buses of tourists (even in late September), we thought this place was relaxing and beautiful. Hint: most of the tourists don't walk all the way to the end of the trail, so you can find some quiet. We loved this viewpoint so much that we made sure we had enough time to come back the next morning (just before our flight out that day).

The drive is ok but the view at the end of it is fabulous. Birds eye view of Banff with the hoodos is a sort walk from the stop. Lake Minnewanka and this can be done together and doesn't take much time.

Beautiful scenic drive past the Banff Centre. Lots of nice viewing stops and if you keep driving past the campground, you can check out the Hoodoos!

Tunnel Mountain Drive begins in Banff at the intersection of Banff Avenue and Buffalo Street. Follow the loop road for 5.5 miles where it rejoins Banff Avenue. Get out of the car at the viewpoints to more fully enjoy what you are driving past. Several view points include Bow Falls, the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel, Mt. Rundle, and the Bow Valley. The hoo-doos are here. The traffic is slowed down by conservative speed limits, but watch for people out and about.
Tunnel Mountain Road goes past the Tunnel Mountain Campground where two of the Red Chairs look out at the mountain itself. Stop there and take a photo, and then check out the Red Chair Project.

How long does the drive take?

Not a long drive but there are quite a few view points with some stunning scenery. The total time will depend very much in how long you stop to soak up the view. There are also a few short walks from the view points as well so this will add some time if you choose to go down that path.

Is there a map of this drive and where to stop?

Or... you can just drive along it slowly. Most of the spots are well marked. The speed limit is fairly low, and most people in Banff are not in a hurry, so taking a slow drive won't aggravate too many.
This is a quote from the Banff township site, "This is a scenic route to drive around. You can take Buffalo Street to go to Surprise corner and keep going to the top of the hill. There is a viewpoint on your left where you can see town of Banff. Keep going North, once you get to the junction you can take a left to get back to the town or turn right to go towards the Hoodoos. After the Hoodoos, keep going and you will end up at a “T” junction, take a left to get on Banff Ave which takes you back to town."
Thats about it. The hoodoos are really cool, and the view from there is spectacular; it gives a great view of the Bow River and the Banff Springs Hotel from the back.
