We always drive around the loop when we are in Banff. It has some pretty views and sometimes we have seen wildlife. This last time we saw a large male elk on the side of the road. There are several large lakes on the loop...More

The Minnewanka Loop was a great scenic drive and does provide great scenic views around the lakes. Lake Minnewanka does have the best views among them. Its a nice spot to see wildlife - we got to see the Rocky Mountain sheep and its babies...More

Ask around Banff where the best place is to view wildlife, and you will be directed up route 1A. We tried this, and it was an epic FAILURE. There was not a single animal to be found, and we tried on two different days around...More

We did the Minnewanka Loop and visited Lake Johnson several times during our week in the Canadian Rockies. We were rewarded with beauty, wildlife (bears, sheep), many photo ops, and serenity. Don't miss this area.

We rented a car at Calgary Airport and drove to Banff, stopping off to do this loop on the way. Turned out to be a good decision, as we had a nice drive and saw long-horned sheep and a black bear along the way. Very...More

The Minnewanka loop is easily found on the first exit ramp to Banff off the transcanada from Canmore and Calgary. Take the right hand turn for the loop drive. About 4 km you will see a sign for Johnson lake. Take this road and you...More
