the peaceful village in Hagiang City where you can walking around to discover local style and culture. The rice field, forest covered village. This is the Tay Village, one kind of ethnic people village. They still kept their origional cuture and habitant. You can come here and stay in the local homestay to have more time to relax and culture experience.

I stayed at Mr Thien's homestay with his family and I had the best 2 weeks exploring the village and taking part in traditional activities.

The village itself is located near the Ha Giang Bus stop making it very easy to get to. Likewise, it is situated near a town as well where you can find everything you need. Nonetheless, it is likely that Mr Thien will have it in the house as he is equipped with everything! The house is surrounded my nature and it is a beautiful sight to wake up to every morning for 2 weeks. I went late June so I was able to see the transition between the yellow fields of rice to the harvested fields.

Keen to learn about the culture, Mr Thien was happy to teach me, which was also made easier by his excellent English. I was able to harvest rice, go hiking up the many mountains near the village, go fishing, weave the traditional baskets and learn about the different vegetation/crops that were used for cooking and medicine, as well as help cooking!!. I was always up to something or otherwise relaxing on the hammock having a laugh with Mrs Thien. When it got really hot, there's a waterfall nearly 30 minutes away where you can go swimming in.

I couldn't recommend this place any more. The family and village are all so hospitable and open to any guests. They also offer motorbike tours with a local English speaking tour guide to Dong Van which is also worth going to. If you want to experience hands on the day to day village life, this is the place to be!!

Nam Hong village is located in Thong Nguyen commun, it is a Community Based Tourism of Red Dao people, this village is more beautiful and authentic than this village. There are more activities to do and the landscapes are more beautiful but less touristy. We visited both Nam Hong and Thon Tha villages but we prefer Nam Hong village to Thon Tha village

If you care at all about sustainable tourism and helping indigenous people preserve their lifestyle, this is a great place to spend your money. In return, you will get to live in a 300-year-old village, in a stilt house with beautiful thatch roof, in a totally picturesque village, where you can go trekking, swimming (in summer), and participate in village and home life. There are 3 families who host guests, for dinner, overnight and breakfast -- it's very inexpensive -- and I was lucky enough to live in Mrs Dung's house; she is a gracious 61-year-old farmer. She shared her home, extended family, farm animals, vegetable garden and smiles with me, and while her English is limited, she's an expert at using google translate on her smart phone. I must say, the contrast between smart phones and a kitchen-cooking fire on the concrete floor was wild; comforts are basic, although there is hot water and electricity, and home-made rice wine plus copious and delicious home-cooked meals. It made me happy to be here, and to help support hard-working people so that they can remain on their farms, in their village, as the city of Ha Giang grows up around them. I look forward to returning one day. (My stay was organized by Yesd Tours, highly recommended for responsible tourism ideas and adventures.)

First of all, say many thanks to Mr. Thien and his family for the awesome experience of living with them.

Secondly, Thon Tha is an incredible village and the villagers are really hospitable, in other words, they want to share everything with you.

Thirdly, the homestays are pretty good. They are clean, tidy and organized.

Finally, there are many activities to do, for instance trekking around the mountains, swimming in the waterfalls, riding motorbikes...

To sum up, if you would like to eat typical vietnamese food with local people and know about their way of living and culture, this is the best opportunity.

One more time, thanks a lot for show us your traditions.

Thon tha is a beautiful rural village a few kilometres from ha giang. We stayed in Thien Homestay. Our hosts were incredibly friendly and speak good English. beds are very cheap, and you can enjoy a feast of home cooked meals and as much rice wine as you can stomach. Trekking, motorcycle tours, scooter hire and even traditional herbal baths can all be booked here. If you want an authentic experience unruined by mass tourism, somewhere off the beaten track, or somewhere peaceful before and after the northern loop adventure, this is the place.

Initially came to Thon Tha Village with the intention of only staying 3 nights and ended up staying 7 nights- this village and the people is truly amazing. Words can't even describe the experience I've had over the past week. If your looking for a unique destination while travelling away from the 'real world' this is the village to come to. Trang was amazing and organised our stay and all our tours from the village. We stayed in Mr Thien's Homestay -I can't express how truly special this family is. Mr Thien, his wife and their 6 year old son were such a welcoming family and took great care of us during our stay. They gave us a real insight into there village and there way of life. We attended parties with them in the village, drank lots of rice wine, had the most delicious food (our favourite by far in Vietnam). Mr Thien and Mr Van brought us on a 3 day motorbike tour to Dong Van- Meo Vac loop around North Vietnam along the Chinese Border. The views are breathtaking. We went on a 8 hour trek with Mr Thien in the jungle and this is a experience not to be missed. I could of easily spent longer in the village- the highlight of our travels by far! If your looking for the road less travelled Thon Tha Village, Ha Giang in the place to come. It has very few tourists, often the beaten track and that's the beauty about it- GO...you won't regret it!

Thon Tha village truly is an amazing place in north Vietnam. It is of a very traditional style, and provides any traveller with a welcome escape to a quiet, peaceful countryside location. The people here are friendly, giving, and really amazing hosts in every way. I highly recommend Thon Tha village as a destination for anybody who finds them self in Vietnam, or the surrounding countries. The company we used for our adventure here is called YESD Social Enterprise (find them at yesd.org ). Trang, our tour guide, provided us with a wonderful experience, and is very well connected with the locals. I highly recommend using this tour company.

Simply - holidays of a lifetime.
A week in Thon Tha and Ha Giang area was something absolutely exceptional.
We mean landscapes but also - in fact mostly - the people who we met.

Mr. Thien, his wife and their son.... so nice, so kind and so friendly hosts! Couple of days in Thon Tha, together with Mr. Thien family was really a great time. Least but not least... the food there... absolutely the best we had during our entire trip in the northern Vietnam. Our greatest words of great respect and appreciation to Mr. Thien and his Family (wife and their great kid :-)

Than Mr. Tuan, our driver, guide, host, good spirit... well, he really made our trip! The loop from Ha Giang, thru Dong Van to Meo Vac and back with him... absolutely great! So helpful, so friendly, just a great guy. Although his English is very limited, he was trying very hard, learning fast and after 3-4 days we had really a very nice conversations together.
We tried to learn Vetnamese, he tried (much better than we did!) to learn English + some body language = just a lot of fun and wonderful experience. "Thank you, Mr. Tuan, you made our trip!".

We travelled around the world a bit, but to be honest, thanks to all these great people, Ha Giang province is one of these places we are missing already and - seriously - we think we would like to visit again.
