Here too we are at the end of the sixteenth century, for a church designed as a palatine chapel and pantheon for the dynasty of the Duke of Sabbioneta, primarily Vespasiano Gonzaga.

From the outside it perhaps says little, it looks like a mini fortress with an octagonal plan narrow in the streets of the historic centre, but the interior is bright, with a sumptuous eighteenth-century trompe-l'oeil decoration which causes an impulse towards the light coming from the lantern, placed at 38 meters high.

In practice the perspective makes it seem much deeper.

In the church also the mausoleum of Vespasian with his funerary monument.

I did not find the church open but like many old churches in Italy, a small side chapel for all day worship was open. The chapel was filled with lovely artwork. A must see!

The church, with its unusual octagonal plan, represents a sort of mausoleum containing the tomb of Duke Vespasiano Gonzaga and the remains of his wife, two children and other members of the ducal family.
While the exterior is not flashy, the interior is, on the contrary, rich in decorations, dating back, however, to the eighteenth century.

It can be dated around 1588 and was built together with the Mausoleum of Vespasian, curiously with an octagonal plan, acting as a sort of pantheon for the noble house. Inside we find the funerary monument of Vespasiano I Gonzaga created by the sculptor G. Battista della Porta, on which is placed an earlier bronze statue of the duke, the work of Leone Leoni. Here he was in fact buried adorned with the prestigious Golden Fleece, a Spanish chivalric honor reserved for illustrious and honorable men.
A secluded room, which is accessed via a narrow corridor, houses display cases containing precious objects and fabrics, such as silver, chalices and coins from the State of Sabbioneta.
The visit includes the Mantua/Sabbioneta Card

Simply a gem, small but very interesting church, octagonal in shape, paintings and very beautiful and suggestive niches, visited solo, a nice memory

in the small Sabbioneta the church of the Blessed Virgin Crowned is certainly a must-see; not comparable to other churches/basilicas in larger cities, it still remains a stylistically very interesting building also due to its octagonal plan and where some members of the Gonzaga family are buried; Entrance fee a bit expensive, the Sabbioneta card is recommended

Impressive octagonal mausoleum, with frescoes that lift it towards the sky and make your head spin. From the outside you can't imagine such opulence
