Top notch long, soft sand surf beach, cool vibe, decent pricing on food and drinks, easily accessible, area is walkable. Full recommendation but a couple of things people should know,
Lodging in the area is everything from a tent lot to world class, so there’s something for everyone but we found a few of the places we looked at were very rough so watch for current reviews preferably from multiple sites when booking ahead of time.
Also this is the only nude beach in Mexico we were told and it’s a little different from what we experienced in Europe or British Columbia where it’s a broad cross section of people from all demographics. There were definitely some naturalist type people just enjoying freedom but we found it to be hugely tilted to the gay-dude side of things so be prepared for loads of penises,
all over, here, there, up, down, penises for days.
Running up and down the beach, doing extended yoga sessions, standing around with the leg up on things, Tussling and tickling, getting oiled up,
penises everywhere.
Old, young, lots of waxed, lasered, sugared penises and testicles.
That being said there was nothing obscene happening and lots of family’s were on the beach and service was good, just something to be prepared for.
Sunset is visible over the ocean on this beach which is nice, and in the evening the street turns to a circus of characters doing various acts for money and selling handmade goods,
There it is, definitely not the worst place to spend a few days!
Note: Trip advisor made me use the words “penis” and “testicles”

Zipolite is about letting your hair down and clothes off, on a beach, with people being respectful regardless of who you are and whom your with...this is not a place to come with attitude, but with an open mind. The restaurants on the beach area are simple with delicious local catch. The climate tends to be relatively constant and the sun can be intense. We come here to disconnect and recharge our batteries.

Zipolite energy makes you come back for more. Awesome place to relax - hang out in the hammock all day, go for a swim and read your favorite book. Yes, that's Zipolite - however I'm going to try giving you a bit of practical information:
To get here:
From Puerto Escondido, local bus from the main road in PE (1hour) apx. 30 pesos - get of in San Antonio and take a camioneta (back of a truck) to Zipolite, which is last stop. Apx. 10pesos. It's normally 8, but gringo prices are higher :)
From Patchutla take the camioneta 10pesos, but again you might get charged more.
To do here:
Relax, relax and relax.
For the active person, go running on the beach - boogie boarding and possibly surfing. It's not ideal surf spot though, waves are crushing super hard and undertows are dangerous. Are you experienced surfer, you might find it fun anyways.
To stay:
On top of the hill, there's a place called shambala that has amazing cabanas with overlook over the ocean and the beach - beautiful place to hang in the hammock or have your morning coffee. We loved it here! Price range apx. 150MEX and up for a single room and 250 and up for a double. No kitchen facilities or Internet.
Posada mexico is located right on the beach, has Internet and hammocks :) very nice place! We didn't stay there, but loved hanging out here because of 2 for 50MEX cocktail happy hour and Internet. Rooms here are apx. 300+ for a double.
Budget accommodation: Posada Carrizo. You get a bed for 50MEX, which is the cheapest accommodation in the area. Really nice French lady runs it, we really enjoyed it her! The place is super chill and has couple of dogs and cats, so you need to be okay with animals :)
Possibility of sleeping in the hammock, bed out in the open or a normal room. No direct beach access or Internet, but great budget accommodation with kitchen facilities.
To eat:
Pollos Asados! Best chicken - possibly ever! Carlos, the guy who runs it have been grilling the chicken for 12 years and he sure have mastered it. It's absolutely amazing. For only 40MEX you get a plate with chicken, rice and pasta. This place is well known with locals, because it really is GOOD!
Side by side with Pollos Asados there's a pizza place: Pizza a la leña. Makes good thin crust pizzas. We've tasted 5 different kinds and keep coming back to pepperoni and mixed meats one. Price range apr. 75-100MEX
Sal y Pimiento is our absolute favorite place! That's the place I would recommend to go for a nice dinner. Amazing fish dishes for reasonable prices (apx. 70-100+), the fish/prawns or squid comes with salad and choice of rice or fries. Several choices of additional sides, but the portions are large enough. Nice atmosphere with lights on the table as well. (Such a simple thing, but you'll be surprised how few places have it).

I think most people either love or hate Zipolite: we went back and forth.
Pros: -Beautiful beach, beautiful water, a laid-back alternative beach culture, very friendly people in the hotels (esp. Shambala and El Alquemista) and an opportunity to meet interesting fellow travellers on the road.
Cons: -There's definitely an edge here. We saw drug addicts passed out on the stretch of asphalt where the shops are located -cars trying not to run them over. When we arrived, we were aggressed for money by a drunk. At another time, we were threatened with a bottle. It's not really safe to walk in dark places at night. Also, there's a problem finding clean accommodation here. This is not a place for people expecting a scrubbed hotel room: it's a place to string up your hammock and look at the stars. Except it gets really cold at night. Our cabana at Shambala really smelled like piss- it was overpowering. Such a shame because the people working at Shambala were angels. El Alquemista has the best rooms on the beach -they were really lovely, but always booked. Book ahead! and stay there if you decide to come to Zipolite, and you'll have a great stay.

I have been to 80 different nude beaches and Zipolite is by far, my favorite. It is a similar vibe to Little Makaena Beach, Maui.
The past 2 years, far more people, all ages, are going nude and there is a comfort level here of no judgements. Lately, far more beautiful, muscular bodies are gracing the beaches but body exceptance means all feel great and accepted.
There are many hotels that are clothing optional and new ones open each year
The 2 far ends of Zipolite, Playa Amor, (beach of love and after sunset mucho amor) and the ALQUIMISTA ends are sometimes 90% naked and an insanely beautiful part of the beach.
The beach restaurants are cheap and incredibly good, creative and breezy under a palapa, while you laze, people watch and have a great meal. Seafood caught daily, most items on menus are fresh, never canned or processed. Plenty of vegan and vegetarian options. Hammocks provided to customers as well.
Night time brings fire dancers, entertainers, (some great others, not so) circus acts to the beach and Zipolite, the wonderful pueblito, which is on the other side of the beach hotels and restaurants. A lot of great handmade jewelry, fabrics, clothes and many other unique items ideal size for gifts.
Bring some coins to tip the performers if you like the “show”. Keep creativity alive and welcome!
Many nights Club Band Bang is packed on the beach. Dance barefoot on the sand floors, try the Mezcal Oaxaca is famous for as most need to NOT drive afterwards as most rooms are within walking distance.
Many nights, during busy season are raves with great DJs. Yes, Zipolite can be very loud all night, even sometimes with massive waves crashing so if this bothers you wax ear plugs.
Full moon I love to take nude walks on the beach (many others are doing the same!) walking with my dog and check out the many Bon fires and pop up music venues.
The moon as does the sun rises on the Playa Amor end and sets on the other end bringing maximum sun and moon light.
A few caveats. The ocean can be deadly. If no one is swimming don’t! If caught in a rip current go with the flow as it will end and and most likely someone will come out and rescue you. Surfers will also so stay calm, wave and yell for help. Ayúdame!
Lifeguards leave at dark and are excellent. Jet ski now for rescues. If you fight the rip current you will loose. Don’t worry about sharks as there are none. Dolphins and whales here.
Much of the winter, the ocean is calm, hundreds are swimming, surfing, body surfing (some of the best!) but watch where all swim and swim there! Listen to the lifeguards!
If you have had too much “party” swim in your shower!
Take a minimum of values, no credit cards, no passport (carry a copy of it) to the beach. Watch your bags when you are away from them. Generally Zipolite is very safe but occasionally, like any place in the world there are the opportunists, we call them robos so keep your cell phone in the hotel. Get away from technology to really feel free and unshackled from clothes, technology and stress.
I came here for years on holiday, was always depressed to leave, so my last vacation I stayed! Just finished a clothing optional, Gay, BNB.
18 months now and have loved every minute with the truly fun, happy, non judgmental, people from all over the world and so cheap to live here. You don’t even need clothes! LoL
Please keep this place on the DL and don’t even mention Zipolite to those that will change or alter our paradise. Gracias!
Don’t forget the Nudista Festival in Feb with body painting, nude yoga, shows and music, with a very large crazy parade. Feel free to march, dance, or saunter along!
Last! Don’t forget the sunscreen.

I visited Zipolite for the first time in March 2005. Nothing I read on the internet prepared me for the best vacation of my life. If you're ready to give up the fancy hotels and hustle and bustle, it's the place to be. I stayed at a wonderful hotel called Brisa Marina and had no trouble adjusting to the lukewarm showers. No electrical plugs took some getting used to but it didn't take long to adjust to no makeup or blow dryer. Our room faced the beach and the waves rolled in continually, soothing away any thoughts I had of the hectic everyday life of home. On my vacations, I like to do nothing and that's the place to do it. Most of the restaurants are on the beach and you walk, barefoot if you want, to breakfast, lunch, and dinner, all the while the surf is breaking within sight and sound. I loved all the food since it reminded me of the taqueria food we have here in Houston. The clothing optional beach wasn't bad either. Nothing's fancy and you can't be demanding like in the larger tourist areas. Just lay back in a hammock and relax your cares away. It's inexpensive and easy to get to if you fly in to Huatulco. I'll definitely be going back again, probably every year for the rest of my life. Hint: Take a collapsable cooler for your Coronas.

Some friends of mine have told me about this beach, wich is located 20 minutes far from Puerto Escondido. I knew Zipolite as the only nudist beach in the country but I thought it was kind of clandestine activity... I am a Mexican guy living in Mexico City. You know how difficult is for latin people accept something like doing normal activities in nude. Anyway, I decided to experience the little town this last December and be there for the New Year's eve.
I was grateful surprised to find that the most of the turism there was coming from Europe (Germany, France, Italy and Spain) but I also found many Mexican around. Nudism there is so natural to experience and that was very nice to me. Mothers with little kids playing next to mature couples, young guys playing drums or the sweet Granny also there naked and enjoying the warm sea.
Someone told me the tide was then very calmed because it's usually more intense (that's why many surfers go to Oaxaca beaches) Restaurants are just a dream (even when time to wait is so long but, what else to do there?) you can have there Haut Cuisine and traditional Oaxaca dishes. No more communications are available but a couple of cafe internet and some telephone cabins to make international or local calls... not signal for celular phones from any company... it means, you have to enjoy yourself and your companions.
I am two weeks far to take a second trip to Zipolite. Another extraordinary scenaries: Masunte (15 min. away) and you don't miss Sunset at Punta Cometa; Ventanilla where is the Natural Reserve for crocodiles and turtles.

We arrived late at night, made the mistake of not getting the taxi to drop us off at our hotel. There is very little street lighting and we felt a little venerable. The hotel we stayed in - Brisa Marina, was recommended to us by friends, and we loved it. We had a balcony room, overlooking the ocean. The room was basic, but clean and spacious and host Daniel was a great resource. The beach was stunning, lots of restarants and bars on the sand. Everything was great value. We stayed for 3 dys, but I recommend at least a week. Great for singles and couples, we did see lots of Mexican families as well, but it was school holidays.

Being from a younger generation and not part of the Hippie culture or acquainted with the past of this little town, I did not have too much expectations when I first visited Zipolite a year ago.
The town, however, has a certain vibe, coolness or magic that makes you want to go back, so I did!
This is a very small place, with just a couple of paved streets and not that many hotels, However, you can either go for the really cheap options like camping or stay at the top-rated Alquimista hotel.
Having opted for the cheaper option twice, I'm now convinced that if you are no longer a teenager looking to party all day/night with the hippies and instead, you are looking for a nice relaxing time at the beach, stay at the pricier hotels. It's definitely worth it.
The town's main street becomes a walking only one during the afternoon and lots of street vendors and food stalls pop up. This is a great time and place for people watching, gossip and cheap eats.
As you might probably know by now, Zipolite is a nudist beach. You'll see lots of naked people but you don't have to do it yourself. Respect seems to be an important premise here: You wanna be a hippie, go for it! You want to be naked? Yep, that too is allowed. Are you a retired couple looking for sun and great food? You can have that too! As long as you don't judge or bother others this place will welcome you and everyone else.
Lots of Europeans live there, so that adds one more layer to the vivid and colorful characters of Zipolite and you get to eat great Italian and French food here plus the usual Mexican dishes.

Zipolite is a beautiful beach on the Pacific coast, well known for being a nudist beach -- that means mostly paunch old Germans. No problem taking a child there.W e stayed in the neighboring town of Puerto Angel; all the beach towns like Zipolite, Mazunte, San Agustinillo have a kind of plastic homogenous feel (you could be anywhere, from Hawaii to the Caribbean) once you get off the streets and wander the main drags.

Hola!

We have been actively researching hotels in the Zipolite beach area and are looking for recommendations. We are hoping to find a hotel that will offer privacy, including a room with a balcony/terrace that will give us privacy while enjoying the views, within walking distance to the nude beach as well as access to a bank/atm and/or a hotel that is credit card friendly. We also would like to have a/c as well as wifi. An adults only hotel would be awesome, however we’d compromise on that should it offer the privacy and other amenities we are looking for.

Zipolite is rather cheap for food and drinks, you can find a lot of mexican food, snacks and pizza places where you can eat well for around $7 to $10 usd, depending on what you order.
For drink, if you are going to be on the beach, the cheapest options is to buy soft drinks and beer in any super market on the town's main street (Empedrado), there are also several bars along the beach but prices will be higher.
A very good place to eat and right on the beach is Sal y Pimienta, a mexican restaurant that serves excellent fish and seafood dishes for a very good price (I ate there 4 times). Lunch for 2 was around $15 usd, with 1 entree, 2 main dishes and a pitcher of agua fresca (lemon, cucumber and spearmint drink) . Ask for a Guacamole, it's the best!
