We stopped at Budakirkja mostly for the opportunity to take photographs. The church is painted with pitch giving it a black color. The black pitch helps to protect the church from the harsh weathering it receives along the rugged coast of Iceland. It was worth stopping here at this peaceful setting for 30 minutes. The area is very scenic and the backdrop of the church, graveyard, and mountains makes for dramatic photographs. If you are traveling the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, this is well worth a stop.

This is an old church built in 1848, which houses some antique artifacts such as a bell from 1670, an alter piece from 1750, a silver chalice and two missing candlesticks from 1767, and a door knocker from 1703. It is one of the oldest wooden churches in Iceland.

There is also a small cemetery on the grounds of the church.

Around the church is a nice walking path which leads to a beach with black lava rocks sitting on top of tannish/pinkish sand. It is a nice place to swim or go for a picnic.

My (now husband) and I were married at this church in September and we have zero regrets. The scenery will take your breath away, particularly if you’re lucky enough to see it on a clear day. It is such a stunning little spot on the Snæfellsnes peninsula. Be advised- there are quite a few tourists that photograph the church so it is likely you won’t have the area to yourself, however, it is worth a trip. Access to the church is not possible unless you’re with someone who has a key.
We can’t wait to go back and visit in the future!

Black is the colour not commonly associated with churches. It is first built in 1703, and then rebuilt in 1800s, but without the blessing of the “spiritual fathers” at that time. There are some antique bells, candle holder etc inside the church. The most interesting thing about this church is the colour, never saw a church in black and never see a country so embraces black.

Tiny black wooden church, just passed Budir Hotel. Our families had congregated for the weekend to attend our daughters wedding. The local congregation had decorated the tiny insides of the church with local flowers, the minister had travelled specially from Reykjavik to the service. This church is stunning in its simplicity and location, no where else in the world can compare!

I love the black structures all around Iceland. This church really stands out and makes for some good photographs. Our hotel was next door, so it was convenient for us to visit this landmark a few times. It seemed to be always windy!

We were in time to see a bride and groom enter the church grounds. Their wedding was conducted alongside this church, only a photographer and minister/celebrant attended. It is a striking church in a picturesque setting and the wedding completed the perfect picture.

What a picturesque spot! Its a two minute drive off the main road, there is a small parking lot, there's no admission fee, and if you are lucky you'll have it all to yourself.

Church was locked when we were there but the outside and the setting was so stunning! A very "Instagrammable" place.

Staying in the adjacent hotel it was only natural to explore the Budir Church up a small hill, even in the wind and rain. Anyone ever tell you that Iceland is the 3rd windiest country in the world. A small cemetery is beside the church and it holds a great history. Pity we could not get inside
