- Chandrakanth GajawadaMahabalipuram, India3 contributionsLovely BoatingHad great time boating here today. 22 Nov 2023. Water was relatively less but enough for boating. They charge you 800/- per boat which can take three passengers. Round trip would be around 45 mins. You can ask the boatman to take some pictures which he did for us. On the shore there are photo graphed who would take good photos and give you soft copy for 40/- each. India Bangladesh border on the shore is separated just by a line of small stones here.Visited November 2023Traveled with familyWritten November 21, 2023
- Donna_ElleMumbai, India180 contributionsCrystal clear watersThe road from Shillong to Dawki is not in good condition (gravel road + roads with potholes and heavy truck traffic) for the last 1 hour of the journey. However Dawki River is worth the long and dusty drive. Be aware, from the road you need to walk down approximately 177 steps to reach the river front. And on your return, you’ll need to walk up these same 177 steps! One shore of Dawki is India and the opposite shore is Bangladesh. You can see our Bangladeshi neighbors on the other bank. You can hire a private boat for ₹1000 for 3 passengers for 1 hour. The boatman (or boy) will row the boat over the river until you reach a small rapid flowing over boulders. There you will disembark and can either walk along the boulder strewn shore (very scenic) or partake of some snacks at the small riverside stalls (please don’t litter). The waters are crystal clear and while you can see the rocky bottom of the river and fish swimming; unfortunately you can also see human trash - plastics & beer bottles at the bottom. Visit Dawki sooner rather than later - as at the rate we pollute our planet, through the clarity of the water you will only see rubbish.Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 30, 2023
- vip_foodieBengaluru, India3,683 contributionsClear and blue water - one of the most beautiful riversDawki river has a lot of activities to offer. The most famous one is the boating. It’s definitely a must thing to do as you can see clean and pristine water and even the bottom of the lake at some parts. There are adventurous activities such as kayaking, cliff jumping, snorkelling and ziplining. I thoroughly enjoyed all these activities. Prices vary as per each activity.Visited December 2023Traveled with friendsWritten January 24, 2024
- TS ANANDHyderabad, India491 contributionsVISIT TO DAWKI MAY 2023 FROM SHILLONGWhen embarking on the route to Krangsuri Falls from Shillong, don't miss out on a must-do detour: continue along the road for a breathtaking vista of the Dawki River. With its crystal-clear waters, it's a sight to behold. However, avoid traveling during the rainy season, as the river transforms into a muddy spectacle. Opt for a paddle boat ride for a unique experience. Be mindful near the border with Bangladesh; it's not distinctly marked, save for a few stones. Take heed not to stray towards Bangladesh, as both sides' border guards will caution you. Because we went on May month.. the water is usually transparent during winter season..from November to February (according to locals). The local people are so lovely and cool. We could witness the Bangladesh border at Dawki river. Nature has its own beauty. Khasi hills and Jaintia hills has its own stories .Visited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten June 3, 2024

This was my first trip to the north east and it was a much overdue trip. As we went during the monsoon Dawki river was not crystal clear but still the boat ride and the scenery was mesmerising. It is definitely a must visit place and if you still haven't been to this side of India then my friend you are definitely missing on a very beautiful experience.Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 21, 2024
- Jegatheeswaran MBengaluru, India6 contributionsVisit during winter to view its cleanest form, Monsoon is not the right time.Like everyone, we also visited it hoping to see the cleanest river, but unfortunately that was not the case. The water was dark green, but it’s not due to the poor maintainance of the locals. During monsoon, it becomes more muddy and unclear it seems. If you want to witness the cleanest river as per google images, visit during winter Nov - Dec. if you are going during monsoon, you can only enjoy the Mountain Views in the boat ride.Visited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 29, 2024

This place is unreal! One cannot even think that there would be a river so clean you can see the river bed with emerald green waters in India. Its a complete must when you visit Meghalaya. I would personally suggest if you really want to enjoy this place head to this village called Shnonpedang and camp there for the night by the river side and wake up to amazing views by the river. You can go cliff jumping, kayaking and even do scuba & snorkelling here. I personally would recommend taking a boat just for your group and go boating so that you can sit back, relax and enjoy the views. Mornings would be good time to do this as its still not crowded and you can see locals going for fishing, singing folksongs and sunlight gleaming over beautiful waters of Umngot river. Its such a surreal expecrience.

The name of the river is Umngot. The place is Dawki. It’s a beautiful river and an excellent boating experience but beware of the road to Dawki. Because of bad infrastructure a place like Dawki is suffering and their can’t be anything more sad than that. They also allow trucks during day time which is a nightmare on the narrow lane reaching the river. If a truck is down, you are stuck for hours.
Get out early from your hotel as the bad road condition will add 1 hour extra to your trip. Avoid rainy and cloudy days(cloud that obstruct your vision) for the same reason.
Make sure your driver takes you to the end point after crossing the bridge else u will need to climb down bad set of stairs to reach the river.
We got one of the finest drivers who made our entire journey comfortable and secure and stayed with us for 3 days in Sohra : his name is Dipak Sarkar (+91 98623 30333, +91 96157 65231).
The self rowing boat will cost you 800/- and they will take max 3 people. There will be one person to row it for you.
You will have to climb down few stairs and cross a path with river rocks (stay careful u might slip) to reach the river.
If you go there on a Friday u might get a huge crowd of Bangladeshi ppl on the river side as it’s their holiday and the river is at Bangladesh border.
Once you are on the boat, the journey is blissful. After rowing for 5-10 mins u will start seeing the transparency of the water so wait for it.
The start and endpoint is same. The person rowing the boat is usually polite, helpful and won’t ask for extra money.

People are polluting like all the other natural places- please don't do it. there are lots of camping sites. be aware and bargain with different camp owners, it's better you buy food directly from small restaurants over there. the camp owners will charge extra if you ask them to provide.
There are lots of activities like kayaking, cliff jump, boating. it's a fun place, we enjoyed the sunrise, you can meet many people over there.
It's a scenic beauty, the water is transparent. it gets cold in the evening, sunny in the morning. we booked a cab for 2500rs on Jan 1st 2020 from Shillong to dawki

Flanking the south-eastern border of Meghalaya, Dawki is a lovely little town located about 80 km away from Shillong. Cradled in the laps of the Jaintia Hills, the Dwaki is sand-witched between India & Bangladesh. The highlight of this town is the magical, emerald coloured river Umngot that flows through it. It is believed to be one of the cleanest rivers in India.
Boating in its waters is an enchanting experience, and makes you feel as if you’re afloat a crystal glass! The city becomes a hotbed of tourist activities especially during the spring months as it hosts the boat riding competition on the Umngot River. Dawki is also host to adventures like kayaking, camping, zip lining, and snorkeling. The surrounding greenery, the cold water of the river and the beautiful suspension bridge on the River Umngot make Dawki a place worth a visit .
It is a fairytale world, and amongst the loveliest places to visit in Meghalaya.

The river has Government boating on 1 shore and boating by private operators on 2nd shore. We went on a weekend in December, so we did not get Government boating tickets which cost Rs 800 per boat. These are all row boats.
We had no choice but to opt for boating operated by private operators.
The private operators charge Rs 1000 or Rs 1200 per boat and operate in an unorganised manner. We tried to negotiate the price, 1 guy agreed to Rs 1000 but made us wait for 1 hour. He was giving boats to people who came after us with whom he was getting Rs 1200. No queue system and the operators are not reliable. Bad experience. We felt harassed. The operator and boatman share the money.
Dont go on weekends or public holidays. Weekdays should be better.
But the river is crystal clear and emerald green waters are there. Lovely experience. You can see the rocks at 15 feet depth very clearly. Must see place!

The river wasn’t as clean as the image
The people told us that we should have visited din winters for better view
The worst experience was with the photographers there. They literally click pictures without even your permission and when you are back they force you to buy it
They charge a bomb for digital photos and after they transfer pic in your phone they will
Mia behave just so that they can charge high
We had terrible experience . It was so disappointing to see them misbehave with females for pictures .

The river is very clean. Though heavy traffic of trucks in this area, so plan to leave early to reach the river by 9 am when it's sunny but not too hot. It is good when it has not rained or the water gets muddy. If you are interested in water sports, 5 km to this place is Shnongpdeng, where you can do water sports on the same river. I missed it as was not aware and had less time. You will get 45 mins of boat ride where 3 people will be allowed and charge you 800/-. 15 mins going + 15 mins coming back +1 5-20mins at the island. You will get better photographs of the island (more scenic). Even professional photographer is available there and some pics can be clicked at a price of 30 rs/each pic. You see the Bangladesh border at the shore of the river but it seems very crowded and dirty. But the river and boat ride is awesome.

My mother and I took the canoe down the dawki River in March 2020 right before the lockdown in india started. I was concerned that it would be murky but march is the perfect time for the River and a full trip to meghalaya. This river's clarity is mind blowing along with all the colorful boats along the route. Please do not pollute this River as I know tourism is going to boom just to see this place. I have traveled all over India and the world, this is the cleanest and most gorgeous River on the planet , its a photographers paradise.

Its a must visit place in Meghalaya. Very close to Bangladesh border. River water is really clean and transparent. Boat ride is a must. Don't hire boats from road side stalls. At the entry there is fixed rate vendor and you wont have to climb difficult stairs to avail the boat. Try to reach morning time or after 3pm.It was very hot in end of October too.

The river water is not clear after rain showers. And if it's not clear there is nothing much to see there really. We had gone last month and water was murky. Roads were not too good either.
