About
Located on the southwest coast of Crete, this remote beach is best known for its pink sand. However, temper your expectations as the amount of pink on display varies with conditions and the season. Regardless, the crystal clear waters make this a popular summer vacation spot, attracting sunbathers and watersport enthusiasts alike. Also, hike up to the neighboring cedar tree reserves for a change of scenery. Visit in the morning to beat traffic and secure a chair and umbrella before the crowds arrive. Or come in the evening for a stunning sunset when most people have left. – Tripadvisor

    A special place worth seeing.
I read the last review from Pamela I think from Patonga Aust and wondered whether I should go or not. I am so glad I did not let that review put me off. This is a special place. Yes the drive there was at times hair raising but boy when isn’t it in the Greek islands. The place was thronging with people and we ignored the first couple of parking lots and kept driving until we could go no further and there is abuse parking lot there. They charge 5€ for the day, 300 metre walk to the beach. I agree it’s crowded and so my advice would be go very early but despite the crowds we had a great time. The place is picturesque with an amazing back drop. On the way back drop into one of the many small tavernas in the small mountain villages.

A lovely beach, definitely overhyped though!
It's a long old drive across to Elafonsi from Chania but with some lovely little villages and sights on the way as you make your way through winding narrow roads, sometimes with sheer drops at the side of them. Anyway about the beach. It's one of the nicest beaches we've ever visited, however it's seriously overhyped and looks nothing like the pictures you'll see in tour guide brochures. There are very small traces of pink in the sand where the sea laps the shore but that's about it. We visited in late October on a weekday. It was quite busy but not to the point it was uncomfortable. The water was crystal clear, warm and shallow, making it a safe place for families or those that are not strong swimmers. When you arrive, ignore the people trying to persuade you to park on their premises and keep driving until you can't drive any further. You'll get to some bollards in the road and just before them on the right hand side is the closest car park, with plenty of spaces. It costs 5 Euros to park for the day. The walk down to and back up from the beach is a bit of an arduous one, especially in the boiling sunshine.

Good place not to miss once in Crete
The beach is large and ideal for families with young children. Laggon is very shallow water, water is very clear. You can spend 2-8h all day if you like. Just remember to drive down the whole street and do not get fooled from "official parking place guides" - there are 2 or 3 parking lots private but directly before beach is the Mega Parking for beach and costs as well 5€, but you save 1km walking......

    Gorgeous slice of paradise
Really amazing beaches, all with slightly different characters and all idyllic. We went in October at the end of the season and it was busy, I imagine in peak season it would be too crowded to enjoy fully- October definitely a good time to go. Really stunning place.

    The blue paradise of Chania
Elafonisi is more than just an island; it's a paradise. The beach boasts a remarkable diversity: tranquil coves for those seeking an easy swim, rocky areas perfect for snorkeling (with an impressive array of fish), deeper waters catering to experienced swimmers, a shallow bay ideal for children; there is a place where water sports enthusiasts can rent boats, but we didn't reach it. There are both organized beaches, requiring tourists to pay a fee, and free beaches, especially in the dunes area. Access to Elafonisi is possible both by water and public transport. From the north coast of the island, you can reach it from Chania or, even more conveniently, from Kissamos. However, it's advisable to book your ticket in advance, as the two or three daily runs are insufficient to accommodate the large number of tourists eager to visit the beach.

    Morning/Day Trip to Elafonissi
We loved going to this beach! It was a very cloudy day which made it actually too cold to swim in the late spring time, but we greatly enjoyed the trip nonetheless. We drove about 1.5 hours from Kissamos down a very scenic drive (just don’t do it if it’s going to rain/storm!) through the mountains. There we stops for food along the way, which we used on the way back for a lovely cafe lunch. The beach itself had plenty of parking if you arrive EARLY (8am-9am). Once we left around noon, a flood of people arrived (off of cruise ships docked nearby it seemed), along with a storm. The beach is huge, unique, diverse, and truly beautiful even from the ground view. Bathrooms require payment, be prepped, and they made us pay for seats even though we left soon after arriving due to the rain storm, which wasn’t very fair. But the location itself was wonderful.

Beautiful beach a must see !!!
Stunning beach with pink sand. Amazing shallow water which links to other parts of the island. Well worth visiting especially if you're staying in Western Crete. There's plenty of space to get away from the crowds which is what I prefer to do. If you want to avoid the crowds then best to go early in the morning before the boats of tourists arrive or and even better option would be to rent one of the nice apartments on top of the hill so that way you can have the place to yourself and take in the incredible sunset.

    Absolutely Gorgeous
Stunning Beach. Despite cold water in early May, we loved the beach nonetheless. It’s a gorgeous beach. Anyone who says otherwise isn’t being accurate. I’d read reviews mentioning challenges parking, a long walk to the beach and crowds. In early May, we had no trouble parking our car or finding a private spot further down the beach. The walk from parking isn’t short, but it’s absolutely worth it unless you’re hauling a lot of stuff or not able to walk very well. No beach is fun when overcrowded so I can’t speak as to peak season, but I can confirm that the beach is beautiful and with warm water it must be amazing.

    Amazing beach.
Beautiful beach. Crystal clear water and pinkish tinged sands at the shore. You can walk out a long distance, including to and around the island. Be prepared for a little walk from the parking areas. Bathrooms (1 Euro) and some food is available at the beach. Drive from Chania is pretty, but the small mountain roads can be congested. Great mountain, gorge, and small village views along the way. We took a different route along the coast back to Chania to avoid traffic. It was beautiful but full of harrowing switchbacks, so I suggest sticking with the main roads (Google map directions). A set of lounge chairs and tiki umbrella was 20 Euro, but they fill up fast.

    One of the best beaches
One of the best beaches we have visited. The drive was a little scary some high mountains and no barriers. Scenery is lovely though. Car park €5 for the day which isn’t too bad. Walk down to beach you needed to be careful on the rocks. Toilets were €1 Beach was busy but to be expected. Water was clear and traces off pink sand were visible. Water was lovely and you could go out as far as you wanted. Well worth the drive to see and to spend a good few hours.

As the picture this beach has a variety of wonderful colors from light green to turquoise and dark blue. The only problems we had it was windy, therefore it was a kind of chilly getting out of the water. And secondly we went with an excursion group and there were not enough time to spend in the beach since at the very beginning we stopped like 45 minutes in a restaurant to eat breakfast... Too much time !!!

Lovely beach & experience. Driving there can be tricky as very narrow, snake-like roads & driving down the mountains. I recommend taking the local bus €20 return, leaves 9am from Xania town arriving the beach @ 11am, leaves the beach @4pm. Really enjoyed wading in the water
Disappointed didn’t see much pink sand just a little shimmer

There is a reason why this beach was voted as one of the most beautiful places in the world. The pink sand, the crystal clear waters are very special. It is recommended to visit very early in the morning or after 6 pm when most of the people are gone. Amazing sunset.

This beach is the most beautiful functional beach I’ve seen so far and I visited several places (Cuba, Corsica, Sardinia, Croatia, some other Greek islands etc.). It’s not only extremely beautiful with clean water of all shades of blue it’s also very convenient - easily reachable by car and it suits its main purpose - you can swim and snorkle and admire sea world. Even in windy weather there are no waives. You can get sunbeds and umbrella (10 euros per umbrella and don’t be too late as they can be sold out by midday) there are showers, toilettes, drinks, snacks-everything nicely integrated in nature.
Whole family loved it and we visited the beach twice in one week although it took as about an hour and half in one direction. This year it is not crowdy due to coronavirus situation but I am affraid it could be overcrowded under normal circumstances at this time of the year.

Went mid-October, water was a bit cool but it was still warm enough to swim and enjoy sunbathing. The sand is pink - in places, but perhaps best seen through a snorkel? Bright pink stripes of sand over the greyer base. Sand is fine otherwise an the beach fairly shallow all over, with patches of rocks good for snorkelling.

The very shallow lagoon is beautiful and great for small kids.

I can imagine it getting a bit too crowded during summer months, as it was, there were plenty of people but not overcrowded as such. It makes sense to walk further to the Elafonissi Island, for the views of the sand dunes and the plants there, and for more beach space. I find the price of 10 € per umbrella spot a bit steep, especially as I was by myself, and just flopped on the beach past the umbrella area, I did not walk as far as you can go to the protected area. Bring your own umbrella there if you want, no shade is otherwise available.

Only thing maybe lacking was choice of food? I had a sandwich and a coffee, both fine, but there are not any choices of restaurants at the beach itself, perhaps further away from it there is more.

I LOVED Elafonisi. The drive is a bit crazy you will need to be a confident driver, but it is worth it in my opinion. People compare this to Balos beach - but both are complete paradise - I recommend seeing both! The drive to Elafonisi is a lot easier than Balos - if going with kids/elderly/disabled I would recommend this beach by far!! The water is crystal clear, plenty of places for pictures, places for food, toilet, beach floats/towels etc!! everything you need is here (unlike Balos beach) !! Really an amazing day and a must visit if you are in West Crete. We didn't see the pink sand but that did not change how amazing this beach is!

A stunning beach with beautiful crystal clear shallow water, warm enough to swim or snorkeling.

The sand is amazing, not as pink as you can see the advertised pictures but probably not the perfect time for the crushed seashells.

We have visited it off season (1st June) but still crowded in the morning due to plenty coaches arrived by 11am. You may not be able to find any sunbeds available but will be better after 2pm when most of the coaches will depart.

We drove from Georgioupolis (around 2h). Half of the way was on the E75/EO90 and before Kissamos we turned left on PEO90/PEO Kissamou Chanion, then turned right and stayed onto Epar.Od. Kaloudianon-Chrisoskalitissas (signs for Elafonisi/Paleochora/Topolia) , which is a small mountain road and you should drive carefully.

Sunbeds and umbrellas can be rented (€15 for 2 sunbeds and umbrella for all day -> €5/sunbed).

Plenty free parking spaces, toilet available on the beach (€0.50 tax), beach bars, cafeteria for something to eat not very far from the beach, showers and shop to buy beach accessories.

Also, kayaks can be rented on the beach (€10/hour for single kayak and €20/hout for double kayak).

A perfect beach to spend the day with family (suitable for small children as well)...a bit windy but nothing matters when you are in such an amazing place like this one.

Recommended 100%.

Really pretty, clear water, white/pink sand... or rather would be pretty if you could get through A MILLION PEOPLE on it! It looked like those chinese beach photos where ypu don't see the beach from all the people.

Anywho, avoid in peak season but if you can get there in June/Sept I'm sure it's a wonderful experience.

Parking close to the beach is free if your car can handle sharp-stone-gravel and can fly after you're parked in by 4 other cars. Otherwise leave it 500m further up for 5 Eur/day and hope your feet don't melt on the way down/up.

This beach has lots of hype surrounding it. I was rather disappointed!
No one tells you that's it's a 20min from the car park down a gravel and rocky path. Not for those with limited mobility or young child. Seen families struggle with prams.
Once at the beach it had hundreds and hundreds of people on it which kinda takes away the shine of this beach.
2 Sunbeds with a parasol and €20! To use the toilet it's €1! Food and drink was OK in price.
The tour we took advised us to buy a parasol from the shop at the car park. Some people did but it was a waste of time as the wind just blew them inside out.
You can walk across the water to the little island and this is where we seen the most pink sand at the waterline. It's also quite here. Some people carried belongings over the water to turn lie on the quieter island. We didn't as we done want to get out backs wet.
The little shop at the carpark sells souvenirs which are OK in price. Also toilets in the carpark for €0.50!
I wouldn't make this trip again but my kids are glad we went today.
Also the bus journey is up across the mountains so if you don't like heights I would recommend this trip!

So beautiful - warm, clear waters and clean, white sand. The colours are amazing. Easy to get to with a big (free) car park just a few mins walk to the beach. We arrived early (at around 9am) which was great as it gets very busy as the day goes on. A pair of sun beds and an umbrella were 10 euros but are all taken by mid morning. Snack bar on the beach.
