About
In the heart of Ireland, just over 1 hour from Dublin lies the town of Kilbeggan, home to the world's oldest distillery, established in 1757. It is the quintessential Irish whiskey distillery - whitewashed walls, weathered slate roof, brick chimney stack, creaking timber water wheel, even regular ghost sightings. This is no mere "visitor centre" but a real working distillery run by a team of young enthusiastic craftspeople (and a few wise old heads too), skilled in the traditional ways of making Irish whiskey. Open 7 days (except during Christmas and New Year). Whiskey Bar. Gift Shop. Free parking.

So Much historical stuff! Great tour!
I enjoyed the Kilbeggan tour, I was amazed at how much history was there. There was so much to see, all of it interesting, and a nice store to buy a nice sweat shirt. I hiope to go back in May for a second visit.

Really interesting tour from our guide Michael, taking us through the history of the Distillery as well as some excellent whiskey tasting! My better half isn't a spirits fan, but by the end of the tour he had a good appreciation for what goes into a good whiskey. I do like a nice glass of the uisce beatha, and as the designated driver, Michael gave me my samples to bring home. I hadn't known how the distillery was brought back to life by the community, their love for this key part of their local heritage really shines through.

A step back in time, a lovely experience.
Gorgeous history, and wonderful how the community came together to save this place. Our tour guide Tracy was very knowledgeable, patient, and happy to answer questions. We learned about what whiskey profile we each preferred, and they had takeaway drams for the driver. Much appreciated with navigating Irish roads and driving on the left side.

    Very good distillery tour
An excellent stop between Dublin and Galway. We booked a tour which went for around an hour. We were in a bit of a hurry, so instead of spending extra time at the tasting… they gave us small bottles to take away ! Excellent. We are doing our “tasting “ 2 days later !

    Almost missed it
We were driving through Kilbeggan when we saw the Distillary by the time we had decided to visit it were were out side the town we turned round and went back. Probably one of the best decisions we have made. As part of the entrance fee we were given a sample glass with a wiskey cocktail in it which was wrapped in a lanyard. Tracy our guide was very informative explaining how whiskey was made as we walked around sipping our cocktail at the end we had a sampling session with 4 whiskeys. I mention this because if you were a driver they gave you the same samples in little bottles to take away so you could live the experience late. Other distilleries take note. Everybody from the receptionist through the staff to our guide was very helpful. The experience will live on in my memory. And of course I have a moment to remind me

Definitely worth a visit if traveling across Ireland
We stopped here for a tour on our way from Galway to Dublin. It was about halfway and in a nice little town. It is mostly a museum with a small amount of whiskey being produced there (primary production is elsewhere). The story around the distillery and community is very cool. The tour was OK - our guide was a great guy but a little subdued and there were other tours happening simultaneously so we often had to wait or had trouble hearing. Our guide did a nice job with the tasting at the end - he was very honest about the various types of whiskey and his preferences. We bought some whiskey and swag in the shop. I wouldn't go far out of my way for this but if you're in the vicinity, it's fun and the tour was relatively short.

Great place to explore Irish whiskey history
On the tour you get to see two sides of Kilbeggan Distillery: old building and equipment from 18th, 19th and 20th century, that was used up to 1957, when operation ceased; but also new boutique distillery with two small stills (3000 and 1800 liters) that started distilling again in 2007. Tour starts with a cocktail and there is tasting on the end as well, including four whiskeys from Suntory portfolio: standard Kilbeggan expression, Kilbeggan Triple Cask, Tyrconnell Single Malt and Connemara Peated Malt. It's nice that you can opt to take them away with you in case you drive or don't drink. During the tour you also get to try new made spirit. Our guide was very friendly and knowledgeable and answered all our questions. Tour lasted nearly 1.5h and there was 7 people on it. We really appreciated that under 18's get free access with paying adult. Gift shop on site in well stocked and I would recommend getting Single Pot Still or Distiller's Cask as they are two expressions that are actually made on site (you can't buy Distiller's Cask anywhere else in the world and new cask is bottled every 2-3 weeks).

Unfortunately it was difficult to understand our guide’s thick French accent, which was made even more challenging by the background noise of the distillery and his wearing a mask.
His discussion and description was boring. He took us through the motions of each of the steps, never including any interesting anecdotes. I wouldn’t recommend spending the time or money to do this.

Just happen to see sign off the motorway and what a pleasant surprise - a lovely old distillery which is in really good shape in terms of exhibition space. The tour guide was very knowledgable. Of course the tasting is always a bit of a highlight, let's hope that the multinational promoters retain this little gem, and the lovely brand of whiskey.

The Old Kilbeggan Distillery Tour was my third on this trip, and the best. It was informative, historic and well-paced. I can't speak highly enough of Tara, whose delivery was so natural, could answer all questions and knew her stuff. The way the whiskey tasting was done at the end of the tour was special - no sense of being rushed with a focus on educating us about the tastes and brands. The post-tour ambience in the bar was excellent and conducive to further conversation. Would thoroughly recommend this tour in Ireland's heartland.

the original structure is still in place with working waterwheel that was used to power the distillery from the beginning. while the older section is no longer in use, the distillery does still operate as a specialty, small batch distillery. A unique double distilled process with some unique flavors on offer. The tour is rich in history and stories.

The staff were very nice and the place has a lot of history. The whiskey sampling was awesome and they tasted very good. I thought they could have done more with merchandise to purchase as the variety was limited. Would recommend visiting the chocolate store next store for some of their Kilbeggan Whiskey treats.

If you know you'll buy whiskey when visiting Kilbeggan Distillery, I would recommend doing the "Bottle your own experience". Very simple yet original idea to make the purchase of Kilbeggan whiskey memorable and personalised. It's a lovely way of buying a unique bottle of whiskey (not sold anywhere else outside the distillery) as you get to learn a little bit about its characteristics, you get to fill the bottle yourself from the cask, taste it and do up the label to go on your bottle.
I got this experience for my husband's birthday. It suited us as we had children with us. Unfortunately, the tour is not suitable for under 12s so this was a perfect compromise. Not too long to bore the children (about 30 minutes)! We (us adults) will come back another time to do the distillery tour.

We had booked a "Blend a Bottle " type of experience. They were nice enough to call us a few days ahead of time to inform us that they only had a few bottles left & to confirm we still wanted to come. We had a booking for a Sunday afternoon. They were very knowledgeable & friendly. We had a few samples & left with our bottle of 14 year old whiskey for 90 Euros. SMOOTH stuff. We were only in town for a few hours on our way to Trim, but it was well worth the pit stop.
