- Rose2 contributionsLive and Learn - Great ExperienceI both lived and studied at the school. I was at home in my simple bungalow with an ocean view, plants, private kitchen and bath, hammock, outdoor laundry wash basin and clothes line. The staff was wonderful and supportive. I took classes with a variety of teachers with the goal to understand past tense Spanish and increase my vocabulary. I achieved my goal and the teachers were patient as my studies were interrupted with a friend visit and an illness. They met me where I was at and were patient with my day to day roll. Like with all things, you get out of it what you put in and I left feeling I accomplished my next step and can continue learning on my own for a time. The location was perfect for me as I loved walking Zicatela beach and the proximity to the main beach area of shops and restaurants. I rented a scooter for ease of transportation to other areas of Puerto Escondido but I could have used public transportation. The school was a great home base. I will return! I had a great experience and stay. Thank you!Visited January 2024Traveled soloWritten February 20, 2024
- Sierra S2 contributionsAmazing experience!! 10/10I spent a month at Puerto School, and I'm so glad I dad! I chose to do 4 hours of Spanish each day, as well as salsa classes and a cooking class. Each teacher is kind, welcoming, and experienced. I believe I made some meaningful friendships with them, and hope to stay in contact in the future! The campus is beautiful, and I enjoyed taking 10 seconds to get from my bungalow to my open air classroom overlooking the ocean. The location is great. I was steps away from the highway as well as a short walk to the beach. There are also a few great restaurants nearby as well for lunch in between class. I can't recommend this school enough!Visited March 2024Traveled soloWritten April 5, 2024
- Larry G1 contributionA week out I'm just beginning to get how much I learned!First and foremost, the teachers and administrator were fantastic. Best of the best. My two excursions were interesting, fun, and I learned alot. The whole experience was very intense. In addition I could view the ocean from my porch. I walked down the hill every day, loving the beach and the strip of restaurants, cafes, and tourist shops that front the beach. Now, although I'm adaptable and loved my accommodations, you should know that the bungalows are a bit downscale. If you need five star accommodations you won't get that. And, it's a very warm beach town, so mosquitoes and mold are a real thing. A couple of my friends came down as well and stayed in the air conditioned bungalows. The air conditioning was great. Thanks to everyone. I have every intention of returning.Visited October 2024Traveled with friendsWritten October 27, 2024
- Benjamin R1 contributionLearn in ParadiseWhere to start when describing this magical place? We could start by describing the breathtaking views of the ocean where we saw whales almost everyday. We could go into detail of how warm and welcoming the staff was. We could also spend paragraphs describing how our teacher Alberto showed us completely novel ways to learn and experience Spanish in our own learning styles. Are there places in Puerto Escondido with more glamorous accommodations? Maybe, but all told this homey little compound made us feel more than at home. We are already planning our next trip here - this time with our boys. We enjoyed 2 weeks learning and living at the school and the 3 teachers we had (due to different levels in the group and weekly rotation) all helped to considerably improve our Spanish in an entertaining and empathic way. Each week several additional activities (e.g. salsa, cooking, night swim, hiking, climbing) were offered and the helpful administration organized surfing lessons. The school sits nicely on the hillside amidst trees, with a sunset view, above a scenic section of playa zicatela that is most of the time not recommended for swimming due to strong surf, but has plenty of restaurants and little shops. For swimming, playa principal is at easy walking distance and colectivas can be grabbed right in front of the school porch every few minutes all day to get near a choice of even more beautiful swimmable beaches and the city centre. Would come again anytime!

As a lifetime language learner, I have sat in my share of language school classrooms around the globe. NEVER have I had an ocean view from an outdoor classroom or enjoyed fresh coconuts and tropical fruit off of the tree between lessons.
From the first moment when my wife and I arrived to visit the school location, we were welcomed warmly by administrators/teachers Sairi & Fernando and every instructor we had lessons with was competent, personable, and had their own unique special interests and knowledge bank they shared with us.
Puerto Escondido is a lively city that attracts open-minded residents from all over Mexico and the world, so you will be exposed to teachers with diverse backgrounds rich life experiences to share.
The school offers a plethora of activities in addition to Spanish. I saw a Salsa Dance lesson happen, and heard from another student about the amazing surfing teachers they had been connected with through the school. The costs were simply added to the affordable tuition payments.
Within three weeks, my wife was brought up to a basic conversational level from her very first class. It's an enjoyable environment to spend time as there are often homemade snacks brought in for sale, fresh starfruit to pick from the trees, and complimentary filtered water for students.
It's a true haven of learning and cultural exchange. I plan to send my friends here later this year as well.
Thank you ILPE!

I spent almost five weeks studying and staying here recently, and every aspect of it was fantastic. I had a lot of questions before I arrived, and the administration was very helpful and patient answering everything I asked. Once I arrived check in and getting oriented was super easy. The administrators were really helpful getting me oriented to Puerto Escondido, as well as working with me on my class schedule and accommodating when I wanted off/ number of hours/ and what days worked best for me. I stayed in one of the bungalows on site, and would highly recommend it. Simple but very comfortable with everything you need. The school grounds are beautiful and very quiet as well.
In regards to the classes themselves: I opted for a pretty intensive amount of classes at 4 hours a day and generally 6 - 7 days a week. I went from speaking virtually zero Spanish when I arrived to holding a conversation and negotiating travel related things pretty easily. I am not much of a "sit in a classroom" type person, but always found the classes to be fun, engaging, and very well done. All of the teachers I had throughout my time were really awesome. They were all super knowledgeable, fun to talk to and learn from, and very good at listening and helping me understand anything I was struggling with. They are all just super cool fun people as well.
If you are looking for a place to study Spanish, look no further. This school and the people here are amazing. I really hope to be back in the future to keep learning.

We really enjoyed studying at the language school and felt our Spanish improved massively from a week of lessons there. Brian was an excellent host, he was very helpful and accomodating during the entirety of our stay. We would reccomend anyone looking to improve their Spanish to study at this school.

I was in Puerto Escondido in September-October of this year and took 1-hr solo classes almost every weekday at the institute. The instructors are super knowledgeable and personable and really took the time to assess my currently Spanish level and work effectively to improve it. Classes were engaging and I learned a ton of local knowledge that I otherwise might not have received just chatting with people around town. Scheduling was done on a weekly basis and was very flexible. As a solo female traveler I felt very safe in Puerto Escondido (obviously with common sense caution) and overall I learned a lot and had a wonderful time. Unfortunately, I didn't go on any of the trips, but was invited to a few! Maybe I would have gone to one if I had the time. There are definitely "cheaper" options in Puerto Escondido, but you definitely get your money's worth here, they're more responsive, and more thorough than the other options. Additionally, the school is surrounded by a huge garden, it's beautiful!

Great experience! I arrived able to speak Spanish slowly in present tense, but had a lot of difficulty understanding spoken Spanish. The teachers here are patient and kind. I took 3 classes of 2 hours each (6 hours daily) daily. So - a lot of instruction! After 3 weeks, I feel confident speaking to native speakers in present and past tenses. (Errors of course but my pronunciation is now good enough to make my needs known in Spanish ) My bungalow room is comfortable and I have a private bathroom with a shower and a kitchen with a refrigerator. The beach is a 5 minute walk and there are great restaurants and bars.

The place is amazing, beautiful views, sunset, very kind staff. It's a 5 minute walk to the beach. And: the quality of the Spanish classes! Teachers adjust to things you find interesting, and after only 9 hours I had a "breakthrough" feeling and now feel more confident and I feel excited to come back here and learn to speak Spanish fluently.

I spent three weeks living and learning at ILPE in January 2023, taking 3hrs of classes per day. This amount of class at least for me was a good balance to allow good progress in my learning, but also to allow time to visit the town and have a holiday at the same time, which was also part of my objective.
The classes were very good with the teachers being patient but experienced in helping you develop and learn very quickly in a short space of time. I had a different teacher each week, and all three were excellent. I appreciated this rotation as each teacher gave a difference experience, style and was of teaching, but all three taught me a lot.
The school is very well located in the town with views of the beach and sea from the school, just a few steps from Zicatela beach, and with easy access to downtown and the market, to the more swim-friendly beaches at Manzanillo/Angelito and Carrizalillo and to the developing surf-vibe area of town at La Punta. The bungalows at the school are clean and functional with bed and shower, and with small cooking facilities attached to each one, and very convenient to be staying in the school to get to class.
The administration at the school are also very helpful in organising your stay in advance, giving recommendations once onsite, helping organise other activities during your stay and generally helping to make sure your stay in Puerto Escondido is as good as it can be.
I would definitely therefore recommend ILPE to anyone looking to learn Spanish but also enjoy a beautiful beachside town!

Last year I went to Mexico for a month by myself. I planned on spending it all doing mission work in Mexico City but unfortunately (or fortunately?) I needed to leave the mission for 2 weeks in the middle due to last minute changes in plans. Thank God the head of the mission organization (Hope of the Poor) recommended I fly to Puerto Escondidio and spend some time at Instituto de Lenguajes. It was absolutely the best decision I could have made! I lived in a cute little bungalow on the school grounds and was only steps away from the ocean. Listening to the waves and watching the stunning sunrises/sunsets from my bungalows hammock was therapeutic to say the least. Another important part of this was my own safety. I was worried about being a single young white female with imperfect spanish alone in this foreign space... however, I felt SAFE walking around exploring, taking local transit, eating out, and just living the relaxed way of life like the surfers do in this amazing city. As for the school, I cannot thank my teachers enough! I feel like I went into my classes with years of incorrect spanish stuck on my brain that they had to chip off and teach me proper grammar and vocabulary. They made it FUN! It was not like the spanish classes in high school that I took. Here I learned with conversations and laughter and smiles. Learning with context clues like that felt more natural and more like how you learn the english language when you were a kid, it did not feel like boring endless memorizing. I LOVED my time at the Instituto de Lenguajes and my only regret is that I could not come back after my mission trip was over to take more classes! I hope to return one day though (maybe with a friend though because this place is TOO GREAT to keep to myself)!

I had an amazing experience as a student at Instituto de Lenguajes. I studied here for 2 weeks and felt my Spanish improve quite a lot at this time. The teachers are very calm, engaging, and knowledgeable about teaching Spanish. The owner is a very friendly, cool guy who offers excursions and on-stay accommodations. We took advantage of the rock climbing excursion and it was my favorite memory from Puerto Escondido - I highly recommend if you are an adventurer.
Overall, the experience here was a 10/10 for me. I have studied at many Spanish schools in Spain, Colombia, and now Mexico, and this one far surpasses as the best one. You get to learn Spanish overlooking a jungle garden and the ocean. It truly is paradise!

Hi! Your reviews here seem incredible and I have heard fantastic things from friends as well. What is the best way to go about booking classes? I am super interested in taking two weeks of classes in May!

Did you feel safe while in Puerto Escondido? Also are the bungalows at the school secure with locks?
Written September 21, 2018
Yes, very safe! No violent incidences as in the typical news. No cartels in that area. The school is secure. Always wise to keep valuables out of sight as is the case anywhere you go.

What kind of school is there...a spanish language school or something else. Recommend any beginner surfer schools or other tours?
