Vitlycke's Museum Café Bronze with traces from the Bronze Age
Aug 2021
Make sure you visit Vitlycke Museum on your way from Gothenburg to Oslo
and make time to fika at the very nice Café Bronze during the summer season. They have looked at raw materials that were available in the Bronze Age, so the food is connected to the place and the museum. I would recommend a berry cake with an Old Norse name, or the very delicious gray pea hummus with some delicious bread!

The actual petroglyph sites associated with Vitlycke are phenomenal! It is nice to see sites like this well preserved. So many in the US have been vandalized.

A very good museum, especially for children
Aug 2019
This museum is very good of presenting the information in a way that makes it interesting for children. However, it still gives a good picture of the bronze age people that lived in this area for everyone but the most knowledgeable grownups. And the part that deals with the signs that are carved into the rocks give everyone new knowledge. For us that prefer visualising and reconstructions instead of the broken pieces of artefacts it is a good museum. I especially appreciated the two reconstructed houses; one from the beginning and one from the late bronze age. For children there is also some practical activities.

The museum itself is good and the rock carvings in the area are quite interesting with good signs. The historic village associated with the museum did not have anyone working when we were there, so that was not so interesting.

The museum is nice, but the archeological site is really amazing.
It is structured in different path in the nature where you can find a lot of rock engravings, all with own explanation.
There are also English free guided tours.

Plan 4 hours, at least, if you wish to go through all the sites. The visitor center is worth it as an intriduction to what you will see. Some sites are more interesting than others, and some require car.

Fascinating history within an arm's length

The museum is a great place to start to get a better understanding of the historical context of the carvings as well as theories on their meanings and purpose. As a trained historian, I felt the exhibits were extremely enlightening and was pleased to see children react similarly. The tour across the street to get an expert explanation of the "main" rock carving was fantastic and kept the interest of all, young and old. The farm behind the museum was worth a look-around and a must if you have children. If we had more time, we would have walked through the forest on the guided path as well. We were also inspired to view many other rock carvings while driving through the area.
