I really enjoyed the marvelous and diverse free concerts I attended in this venerable Music Conservatory in Morelia. I saw orchestra performances, a blues group and an incredible children's choir. Quality performances at a comfortable and beautiful setting.

I just came back from 2 weeks in Morelia attending spanish classes at Baden-Powell Institute and living with a family. During our stay we frequently sat by the Conservatorio de Las Rosas in the afternoon and listened to piano, violin, celllo, guitar and clarinet music wafting out of 250 year old practice rooms, while drinking coffee at one of the cafes in the Jardin de las Rosas.. But the note I found on your site by a former student was disheartening, if true. They do have a summer music program for extranjeros in July, which I was thinking of looking into for my violin and viola playing high school daughter. However, i have no first hand experience of the instruction or level of students at the conservatory. There are many music students in and around central Morelia. It would be shame if the Conservatorio is a front for something else, or living on past reputation; that is certainly NOT the opinion of many Morelianos and a couple violin students I talked to (in spanish) about it. Also, the new director was quoted in the newspaper as saying the school needed to reflect the diversity of the population (maybe in reference to rich students from Mexico City?) and new types of music and composing, while preserving the tradition of classical music.
While there we attended a beautiful free concert of the sinfonia orquesta de Michoacan (state orchestra) with a wonderful opera singer in the Catedral de Morelia. The concert was full of young people and music students--way more that you would see at a classical music concert anywhere in the SF Bay Area and they were truly into the music. I hope your other reviewer had just had a bad experience.

Morelia has toooooo much to offer, but you CANNOT miss this place. Is not only that walking inside this astonishing 1595 building gets you back in history, but you will hear an opera singer rehearsing, a violin student practicing or a whole band performing, while you watch enthusiastic music students all over the place. The whole atmosphere is food for the soul.

Although the building itself is beautiful--perhaps the most beautiful music school in the world--the pretentiousness of Las Rosas cannot be underestimated.
As a former student, let me assure both tourists and scholars that the place is basically a front for mediocre, money-laundering bankers and equally mediocre musician-types trying to escape Mexico City´s smog or Cuba.
Sadly, the school that once housed the Morelia Boy´s Choir is now basically a rich-kid´s playpen, with poor academic standards and lame performance standards as well.

We were heading to the Templo de las Rosas next door but as we passed the doorway to the Conservatory the sound of music drew us in. The passageway from the street opened into a lovely courtyard surrounded on all sides by deep cloisters. We found a bench and sat for a bit, listing to the music and drinking in the peace and tranquility.

This superbly maintained building with it's attractive central garden is now home to the music conservatory. The former cells are used as class rooms. I was there fo a multi-day cello competition. This pace is buzzing with activity.

The conservatory is a magical place. If you're there for the free Thursday 8pm performance, enter from the street and go to the right, up a few steps to the auditorium. But arrive early and enter from the street and go to the left that will take you to the tranquil and nicely landscaped interior garden courtyard. You'll be enchanted by the sounds of music.

We wanted to see this very old music school and my wife also had another reason. The school that goes back to the 1700s is in a lovely part of town with other beautiful old buildings all around. This must have been a wonderful old convent once upon a time. We admired the flowering bushes and trees as well. We entered the Conservatorio and wandered around for a while and enjoyed the music being practiced behind many doors. There was a courtyard with a statue of a composer in action. We wound up at the school's library where my wife hoped to find sheet music for piano by the Mexican composer Ponce. We were shown a notebook filled with exactly what my wife was looking for and for pennies they would make photo copies of pieces she wanted. We finished our time there by examining some of the posters and notices of various concerts and performances that were coming up and paid special notice of the ones that week since we were only to be in Morelia for one week. it's a nice place to visit but especially if you are a music fan.
Later on we visited the Casa de la Cultura and found more music and my wife found a free piano that they allowed her to play.

The conservatorio de las rosas is beautiful in the summertime there are summer camps so if you walk around you can hear all the students playing an instrument and in time where there isn't vacations there are classes if you're lucky enough you might even get to see a concert.

As soon as you walk into this magnificent building, you can delight your senses with the beauty of architecture and music. This is a must to visit, we went with a guide, who helped us notice details that I had not seen befor.
