We loved the caves although it was hard to find the track initially. The walk was enjoyable, through a scenic track along the property. The caves had a staircase down into them. Caving equipment is essential.

Very steep at the beginning of the hike. When we got to the caves it was well worth the hike. We are a little bit older and not in shape but made it.

Quite steep access track that flattens out to a countryside stroll. Cave is dark with ladders and steps already there.

The Mangaone Cave is more about the trip than the destination. Set in a beautiful valley at the top of a very steep hill; it is a small and quite silty/muddy cave. Bring a tourch to explore but do not expect Waitomo.

If you're into caves, great scenery and a dirt road. This is the place for you. 40 km from Wairoa, 6 km up the narrow, winding and unsealed Mangaone Valley Road. Turn off SH 2, approximately 4 km north of Nuhaka or 5 km south...More
