Exploradores Outdoors did an exceptional job. They had great safety precautions and equipment, experienced guides with great personalities, and this was the most breathtakingly beautiful rafting trip we have experienced. Class IV Rafting is riskier than I realized, having only rafted up to class III in the US. The rafting company did nothing wrong, but rivers are unpredictable and our raft ended up on its side wrapped against a boulder in class IV rapids. Three of us were washed out of the raft and the remaining three people had to do a somewhat treacherous jump off of a boulder into the rapids. I would not recommend this rafting trip if you are unable to swim to the edge of a river bank and climb out (they also had rescue kayakers to help), or if you are unable to do something like jump off of a rock if your raft gets stuck. I think I would’ve been comfortable with the risk level as a solo traveler or a young couple, but watching my 14-year-old son disappear under class IV rapids is an image I won’t ever forget . Thankfully, everyone was OK aside from a few bruises and we had an absolute blast other than this one part of the experience. For our risk tolerance, we have decided class III is our max from now on. Again, this is an exceptional company, but I think people should understand the risks. This was also an exceptional deal, transporting us from the S. Caribbean coast, providing two meals and taking us to our hotel in San Jose for $100 each! And they provided professional photos of the entire trip for only $25! One other suggestion: please install seatbelts on your bus. Statistically, the risk of an auto accident is probably much greater than a rafting accident. Covid safety protocols were also good. And if you’re comfortable with class IV, this is the most scenic river and the best company to do it with!

We booked a transfer from Cahuita to La Fortuna with rafting on the Reventazon River.
The logistics are great, they pick you up in front of your hotel/house and leave you in front of the next one, and provide breakfast and lunch.
We were the only ones having booked the rafting on the Reventazon River, all the others having booked the Pacuare River. We were not sure about the safety, having never done rafting before. They advised us to do the Pacuare River, where 6 boats in total would be used and 2 kayaks, rather than one boat with us alone and the guide. Furthermore, the Pacuare River was at an excellent level, not too low and not too high.
We couldn't have been happier to have followed their advice. The Pacuare River is wonderful and we never felt unsafe, with the kayaks always present at the key points of the rapids. Our guide Angel was precise with his orders and his piloting, and we did all the descent without any fall in the water, but obviously all wet ! We had the chance to have a great team on our raft ! We saw plenty of Cormorans and Kingfishers and we swam in a canyon in the middle of the tropical forest. The river is magical, surrounded by the rainforest all the way, with just nature and sometimes natives people.
This has been one of our best experience in Costa Rica !

Amazing 1 day rafting trip on the Rio Pacuare. Even better than expected. The level of the rapids were just right to be challenging enough to be difficult and feel like you could be toppled out, but not dangerous at all and well within beginner capabilities. The scenery was incredible and we had a good breakfast and lunch included in the day as well as some fresh pineapple by the river. The guides really made the day so enjoyable, they were all so friendly, helpful and knowledgeable giving information about Costa rica and the wildlife. They gave us lots of information on the bus to the starting point and then time to practice in the water before starting the rapids, so it was all very safe. We had Eduardo as our boat guide who was brilliant at not only guiding us on the raft but showed us lots of wildlife on the way. Also the head guide Miguel was on our bus from Puerto Viejo was great as well. Incredibly well organised company, easily organising a big group that day and we were picked up in Puerto Viejo and dropped off in San Jose.

I did 1 day rafting with exploradores. This was one of the best activities i did on 10 day trip to costa rica plus maximum value for money. this is a low water season but we did get wet a few times (high water season could be more exciting. Not the agency's fault). The agency picked me up from my hotel in San jose, then after 2 hours of drive, they provided breakfast , 3.5 hours of rafting. My guide was Nella. She was awesome. After rafting we had lunch and then they drop you off back to your hotel or provide transfer to la fortuna , cahuita, puerto viejo or tortuguero. All of this for only $110. I highly recommend you do this as your second day activity in costa rica if you land in san jose and then take a transfer to either tortuguero or la fortuna. I didnt go to tortuguero but met people who described it as a wild place. You can transfer to la fortuna thereafter.

A third party helped book Exploradores Outdoors to help transfer us from San Jose to our pickup location for an overnight white water rafting trip and then took us to La Fortuna. The bus was clean and comfortable. Our layover was at their facilities which is gated, provided us with breakfast and had bathrooms as well as a locker area. We were required to leave our suitcases overnight, but felt it was safe due to the security provided by Exploradores. When the bus was ready to leave with the white water rafters, we joined the day trip group and the guide did a great job explaining the safety procedures for our activity. After rafting, the shared shuttle driver was very safe and efficient while taking us to La Fortuna.

As part of a Costa Rica travel package, we did a three-hour Pacuare River white water rafting trip with Exploradores Outdoors. They were fantastic! The guides/instructors were friendly and knew their stuff. They successfully navigated us (a raft with seven people) through Level 3 and 4 white water rapids. Most importantly...they made it all fun. Highly recommend.

Pacuare white water rafting tour + breakfast and lunch

Definitely recommend. Our guide (Roberto I think) was extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic.

We were beginners and it was a little challenging at times but the rafting guide (Roy I think) was great.

Beautiful scenery, and lots of excitement, great day!

Definitely wear shorts and a t shirt!

Great experience! They definitely take safety seriously so expect to get the full rundown of possibilities and how to respond if things go awry. While this was CERTAINLY a thrill, the guides are so strong and technically advanced that they know how to navigate that river and make it a good time for all. Thanks to JC for a fun-filled day full of laughs and adventure….and it was a LONG day. They put in a lot of work to make it a great experience for guests from hotel pick-up, breakfast, gear, lunch, and hotel drop-off. Some folks had a ton of luggage so watching them load all that after a whole day of rafting one of the top rivers in the world, hard workers!

Rafting part of the trip and meals were a 5 (although water was quite low so not as big of rapids in parts of river), but the bus ride back was problematic. Our guide, Kenneth, was a lot of fun and very knowledgable and got us through the river great with nobody falling out (one close call). Beautiful scenery along the river and it is a lot of tour for the money...transportation, two meals, and 4 hours of rafting. We had problems on way back though when our driver spoke very little english and did not know where our hotel was (despite being told he did know before we took off). We were between san jose and rafting, so we should have been first off bus. Instead he went past it and took us close to san jose before calling for location. We were at one point 3 miles from hotel but then he kept going and took all passengers throughout san jose and had to turn around after and go 30 min back to our hotel thus dropping us off 1 hour after the expected 5:30 drop-off. A long and unnecessary 3.5 hr bus ride after a long day. Photo package was reasonable (25 bucks for 50 photos) and appreciated.

We used Exploradores Outdoors for their shuttle service from San Jose to Tortuguero. This was definitely a journey of many parts!

We were collected by taxi with some other guests and taken to a rendezvous point in the city. The taxi driver was very friendly and helpful. We did have to wait quite a long time at the rendezvous point cramped in the taxi as the driver didn't feel it was a safe location for us to go wandering about.

We were transferred to a shuttle and were the last guests onboard in San Jose. This unfortunately meant that we were sat on the last row of seats infront of the luggage where the wheel arches are located. My knees were up by my chin which wasn't very comfortable but more concerningly someone's heavy luggage literally fell on my Mum's head as we were driving along. She ended up with a headache and sore neck but it could have been much worse. I spent most of the journey concerned that if the driver brakes suddenly, a common occurrence in Costa Rica, all four guests on the back row would be buried in luggage. There was nothing holding the luggage in place such as a net. The guide was very informative but mentioned he had four friends and family along today. I couldn't help feeling that if they hadn't been onboard there would have been more seats to put luggage on and so Mum wouldn't have been hurt. When we arrived at the breakfast location I mentioned to the guide that a bag had fallen on Mum's head but didn't really feel it was taken seriously and that this situation wouldn't occur again in future to other customers when they were busy.

After breakfast those going to Tortuguero continued on their journey. Luckily this meant two buses and I noticed the driver made sure the row of seats in front of the luggage was kept empty. Carla who joined us as the guide for this section of the journey provided lots of useful information including explaining how the banana plantations we were driving through worked.

The boat journey to Tortuguero was very enjoyable!

The return journey had smaller less crowded vehicles which were more comfortable though it was a good thing there were spare seats as on the last leg to San Jose the rain was dripping through the fans onto some of the seats so we had to move. Be aware of traffic issues, as our return journey from the rafting base back to San Jose took 6 hrs due to traffic.

Please note these were the only shuttles we took in Costa Rica which didn't have seat belts for guests.
