About
A jewel of the Baroque era meets contemporary art. 70.000 restored books, ceiling frescoes and sculptures in the magnificent world largest monastery library meet creations of Erwin Wurm, Rudi Molacek and Lois Renner in the huge museum of the Abbey. The new gothic exhibition 'Close to Heaven' is putting on display a major collection of medieval sculptures and painted panels of the collection Mayer. -The artworks of the late Middle Ages continue to exert a powerful fascination on us even today. Beside there is a Natural history museum with exhibits dating to 1866 - 1906 (the 'Museum in the Museum') and a Museum of Fine Arts as well as plays host to special exhibitions and a multimedia Abbey presentation.

I am a big book lover and make a point of visiting unique, old and/or beautiful libraries everywhere I travel, and this is my all time favorite library in the world. My husband and I actually rented a car and went out of the way during our trip to Austria to see this library and it lived up to every expectation. A simply serene and sublime place, a monument to holy works and scholarship, well staffed with volunteers, a very helpful audio guide available in at least six languages, a restaurant on site, as well as a museum and a wonderful church in an idyllic setting - it's not to be missed. I only wish we had given ourselves more time to visit some of these other related places around the library - my recommendation for a visit to everything is three hours. Also, the gift shop is very nice and includes wines made by the monastery monks - with tastings available before purchasing. This was my favorite place visited during our 10 days in Austria.

Admont Abbey Church and Library are absolutely worth going out of your way to see. It is the most beautiful library I have ever visited. The town of Admont is centrally located in Austria near the Ens River, making it a do-able day trip from either Salzburg or Vienna. It is closer to Salzburg than Vienna though. While it is possible to reach by train, driving is considerably faster and easier.

Stunning and wonderful,we were completly taken by surprise by the sheer beauty of the place. Also the frescoes are nicely described and you can endlesly explore what they represent. We went with kids who love books and we explored everything, even the floor has a great pattern. We visited when almost nobody else was present and the guard/guide was very nice and even showed us a hidden staicase, as our kids are genuinely interested. A must-see.We will certainly come back and explore the place some moře.

It’s not an easy day trip and might be more suited if you are traveling to places like Hallstatt or Salzburg, but it is definitely worth it for the library.
There a a couple of smaller museums and the abbey itself; but sign able to open the door to the library and seeing it in person is truly and experience.
There is a seasonal weekend train (summer) from Vienna; we had to take 2 trains and 1 bus to reach the abbey, but would do to all over again

The visit is unmissable. This is the most beautiful library I have ever visited. The day we went, the museum was closed, but our goal was to visit the library. Before entering it, there are 3 multimedia rooms with glass windows that tell the story of the monastery. Everything very organized. At the end there is a little shop with various products.

It's like walking into a fairytale. The library is breath taking. Staff is so knowledgeable and willing to answer any questions. I recommend putting your camera/phone away and just take into library. Look at ceiling for beautiful painting.

The largest abbey library in Austria. Abbey very rich in resources, like almost all and high price. Very good collection of modern art. Excellent 3D mirror projection of the Benedictine rule. Neo-Gothic church

Step into the largest monastic library in the world and heaven on earth for bibliophiles. I’d love to spend an entire day there. Just loved the art and architecture. So much history in and around the library.
Yes, it’s totally worth it.
