Cabo Pulmo is about a 1.5-2-hour drive from Cabo San Lucas. Roads are great until the last 10 kilometers or so, when you hit a dirt road that for all intents and purposes ends at the heart of the place. At the bay where the snorkeling happens, there is a restaurant, a couple of places to stay, and 4-5 snorkel tour companies. You don't need to call ahead to reserve, but I recommend that you do, particularly if you have a large party, because you will otherwise be going to each place to find out whether they have a boat available, how long it will be till the boat returns, how much it costs, etc. Phone call or online communication ahead of time may be more efficient and will leave you feeling like you have a bit more "leverage" in your shopping. The companies each offer virtually the same tour--about 2-2.5 hours on a boat that holds 6-10 people and goes to 4-5 stops. They all provide gear, including lifejackets (which appear to be mandatory). Some provide fruit, drinks or snacks, others are bare-bones and encourage you to bring your own water and snacks. There are two restaurants there (so so), and a several Oxxo's and other tiendas during the drive to get waters and snacks. The spots are very short boat rides away. Once there, guides swim with you. One stop is on the reef, with a wide variety of fishes (away from shore, can be some currents). One stop lets you float in a large school of silvery big-eyed jacks (also away from shore). Another stop along shore to spot turtles. Another stop near shore with colorful fish Sometimes, they also go to a sea lion area (when the sea lions are there). There is a variety of reef fishes and corals, though like most reefs today many colors are bleached. In some spots, the water is crystal clear; in others, it is a bit murkier. The water in spots away from shore can be cooler, but overall this is accessible to most any level of snorkeler. We were treated to many rays jumping out of the water, in addition to the snorkel attractions. It really is a full-day trip to and from Cabo SL, perhaps a little shorter from SJ de Cabo, but if you have the time and are interested in snorkeling, it is worth the trip.
