About
Redwings Caldecott is Redwings Horse Sanctuary's largest visitor centre, home to almost 120 rescued horses, ponies, donkeys and mules. Here you can meet mini but mighty Shetland pony Sampson, plus a whole herd of more than 30 donkeys and mules – including adorable donkey Esther and Muffin the Mule! Visitors can enjoy walking tours and horse care demonstrations, followed by hot drinks and tasty snacks in Oliver's Cafe. There is also an on-site gift shop offering a range of souvenirs, proceeds of which go to support the hundreds of equines in the charity's care nationwide. While visiting Redwings Caldecott, you might like to support the work of the charity by adopting one of its friendly residents, either for yourself or as a thoughtful gift for a friend or loved one. A year's adoption costs just £15! Redwings Caldecott is open every Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, 10am to 4pm. Entry is FREE and dogs on leads are welcome too!

I visited with my 3 year old and parents in their 60s in June 2021 while COVID restrictions were in place. It was a great way to spend a couple of hours, especially as entry is free (small donation).

The grounds are big, with lots of fields containing horses, donkeys and ponies. We just walked around there but there was also a cafe and golf
club on site.

Was blown away by the work done at this sanctuary. Staff very friendly, lovely open spaces for the horses and donkeys and a great place to spend a good few hours petting the animals. The cafe and gift shop were excellent and offered great value for money as well as supporting this great cause. The cakes were delicious!

We had tried to book online for here, but every time slot said 'sold out'. We went anyway and they did let us in. The horses looked lovely but unfortunately the weather conditions were appalling, more like January than August, so we did not spend as much time as we would have liked. There were no toilets there. We were advised to 'drive to the hall' and there were no boxes for donations - perhaps that is a covid-19 thing. Perhaps we should go back when the weather is better.

Hi johnofhornchurch, thank you very much for visiting Redwings Caldecott. As we are mainly an outdoor attraction, sometimes weather can have a bearing on a visitor's experience, but we're really pleased you still took the time to come and see us and hope you'll be able to pop back on a sunnier day. At the moment, we are asking all visitors to pre-book a time slot prior to arrival so we can control the number of people on site at all times and ensure we remain Covid safe. Slots have been selling out quickly hence the online booking system saying tickets were sold out. We were able to admit you because not everyone who had booked a ticket at that time had turned up but we would advise anyone wishing to visit to make sure they confirm a time slot beforehand as we may not be able to do this for everyone. Donations can also be made online when booking your ticket. We have two sets of toilets at Redwings Caldecott, but unfortunately one set is currently undergoing maintenance. The remaining set are based in Caldecott Hall, a lovely on-site building which is also home to our gift shop and cafe. It's a little walk from the entrance hence one of our team members may have advised a short drive to the Hall to use the toilets if the weather was really bad. Thank you again for visiting and we hope to see you again.

This was my first visit here despite living nearby for some time, but was told it has been expanded and developed in recent years. There is quite a lot of walking involved, but thankfully there are benches scattered here and there. There are also hand sanitising stations throughout too. Lovely to see the horses, ponies, donkeys and mules all being well cared for, but personally thought it would have been nice to have seen some other animals around too, maybe a few llamas and some rabbits, ducks, chickens wandering around to diversify a bit? Amazingly this place is free to enter, though they do suggest a donation or buying something from the little shop to help funds. We had lunch in the gardens of the small restaurant. The food was very nice and not overpriced. Car parking is excellent too.

Thank you so much for visiting 417valr and your lovely comments! We're really pleased you enjoyed your time with us. As a charity that specialises in the rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming of equines, we unfortunately don't have the space to provide a home to other species. Currently we care for more than 1,500 equines across the UK, with more in need of our help every day. We hope with our centres offering the chance for visitors to meet a wide variety of our rescued residents, from Shetland ponies to Shire horses, donkeys and mules, that there's a new four-legged friend for everyone :-)

Although I've lived in the area for many years, this was the first time I'd visited Redwings. Plenty of walking is involved, but there is a reasonable amount of seating thank heavens. The cafe was good for lunch and toilets were available. It was nice to see the horses, but feel it would enhance the place to have other wildlife around too, such as geese, ducks and perhaps a petting corner for the children. Horse drawn rides would be another nice feature. It was surprising to discover that it was free to enter.

Visited at the weekend, on arrival, all the rules were clearly explained to us, and the route through the paddocks explained.
everything was well laid out for COVID and we had a great couple of hours in the fresh air. Yes it was a disappointment that you couldnt touch the Animals, but that has to be understood at the moment. Finished visit with a cuppa in the cafe which was very good.
Would strongly recommend.

We also fully appreciate the disappointment of not being able to touch the animals right now but thank you for your understanding. We hope to welcome you back again soon x

So, what can we tell you about Redwings Horse Sanctuary…? It is simply amazing. This wonderful place survives simply on donations, the work they do in rescuing and caring for the horses, ponies, donkeys, and mules is outstanding and restores your faith in people.

It’s a great day out for all the family and it’s free too, you just need to book online. Redwings Horse Sanctuary needs all the support it can get. So PLEASE do visit them, you truly won’t be disappointed, oh but a word of caution, you will fall in love with all the wonderful four-legged residents, and you won’t want to leave them behind!!

Please Support This Wonderful Cause!!!!!!!!!!!

Dear Team
Tank you for making our visit so wonderful. The work you do is amazing, and your staff are so friendly they clearly are passionate about the work they do and have the welfare of the wonderful horses, donkeys, ponies and mules at the heart of everything.

THANK YOU
Ian and Roy

Never visited before, we had a great time, booked in for 11 am. Plenty of COVID precautions in place, some lovely horses and donkeys. Well worth a visit, it's free, but make a donation if you like.
