Our group included 21 US and 3 English travelers on this magnificent journey. Repeat customers were the norm, with a group of 5 or 6 making their repeat trip. One person was on her 22nd trip with Baja Discovery. Angie and her crew made the trip to and from the lagoon as easy as possible, especially the commercial leg from Tijuana to and from Loretto. This new arrangement has shortened the small plane leg by some 1-1.5 hours each way.

The camp is located in an ideal setting, on an island right in the lagoon. Staff members, both in the camp and on the boats were friendly, courteous, and always ready to make us feel welcome and safe. The food was exceptional, considering all supplies had to be brought in by boat. Snacks and drinks were available at all times.

The whales cooperated by showing off their dexterity in the water (spy hopping, breaching and log rolling, etc); and, many came to the boats to be "petted". Mothers and babies were especially friendly. All 24 of us got to pet a whale at least one time, and many had several opportunities to do so.

Camp activities, besides whale watching, included kayaking and a boat ride around the mangroves where lots of birds were spotted. Other activities are available (check out the website), A well stocked library on the ecosystem was available in the "dining tent". Researchers and staff presented information on the current status of the gray whales and their amazing journey throughout history.

Baja Discovery is a class operation that will not disappoint.

This was my second stay with Baja Discovery and I'm already saving up for a third.

I have also been to the gray whale lagoons of Baja three times previously with operators other than Baja Discovery, but Baja Discovery is by far the best, both because of their prime location *inside* the whale viewing area, and their superior business practices. They are not only respectful of the wildlife, but also of their crew members, the local community, and the greater ecosystem. While some other operators in San Ignacio are boasting about their unsustainable and unnecessary "glamping" amenities, Baja Discovery keeps things simple, yet comfortable, the way the original founders of San Ignacio eco-camps intended. I promise you'll have everything you need, and more, at Baja Discovery's Punta Piedra camp and will feel good about making an ethical choice.

What really resonated with me was how much Baja Discovery prioritizes supporting the local community. Purchasing fresh tortillas made in the nearby village, fish caught by family members of the crew, crafts hand-painted by local artisans...they spread the love as much as possible.

For anyone unsure if the price is worth it, please know that it includes *everything*, including private bus transportation from San Diego to the Tijuana airport and charter flights from Tijuana to the lagoon. The drive from San Diego to the lagoons can take two days each way, so getting there in less than three hours is a real game changer. You also get all of your meals, snacks, and drinks (including alcoholic beverages), two whale watches per day (weather permitting), and other activities such as guided nature walks and short kayak paddles. You can participate in as many or as few activities as you like. If you prefer to just sit and have a glass of wine while watching whales from shore, that's fine too.

Please choose Baja Discovery and support sustainable, responsible ecotourism!

My husband and I had an amazing whale watching trip with Baja Discovery!!! First, the location of the Baja Discovery Camp was perfect. We were able to watch whales breaching right from shore (can't do this at the other camps in the lagoon). The staff was impressively knowledgeable about everything "whale", ready to help with any need and providing food that was first class! In the short time we were there the staff made us feel like family. You could tell they loved their work. Lastly, the whales put on a remarkable show! Many people have gone whale "watching" this was so much more immersive!!! Not many trips can be described as "life changing" but Baja Discovery whale watching was just that!!!

I have had the good fortune to go with Baja Discovery many times. And while I will never forget my very first time to touch a whale, the trip this year was beyond measure!

From the moment you arrive until the moment you leave, the awesome crew of Baja Discovery take care of your every need. Whether it’s phenomenal food or kayaking in the mangroves, or the ultimate experience with whales, you can tell that these people not only are thrilled to share their environment, but they really love what they do. My recommendation is to book more than one time with them because you’ll soon discover you want more and more! I am ready to go again right now.

Another benefit of going with Baja Discovery is you get to watch Whales 24 seven/7. The camp they use is the absolute closest to the viewing area so you can watch whales all day long.

And the food??? Beyond words!! Everything cooked fresh on site. The grouper fish tacos and carne asada are my favorites!!!!

Our whale watching tour with Baja Discovery was amazing and felt like a spiritual experience. Having the whales approach your boat and being able to touch them was an indescribable experience. From the moment we met Angie and her crew at the start of the trip in San Diego we felt cared for. They guided us through the border crossing and Tijuana airport and it was nice to feel no worries about any travel snafus. Once we arrived at our camp in Punta Piedra we marveled at the perfect location. You are able to observe lots of whale activity right from the shores of the camp. The staff was wonderful and very knowledgeable. You can tell they have a great deal of respect for the whales and want to keep this special place

If you are someone who is drawn to go beyond the usual whale watching, this is the trip for you. To make contact with beings that mostly live in another world. No one can guarantee contact with the whales, but I was able to touch them five out of six trips. Sometimes more than one would come up to the boat. It is their choice.

There are no luxury accomodations by the lagoon. I would pick this one for the fact alone that you can just look out all day and see whales. But you also feel welcome and taken care of as described by other reviewers. Hoping for a fourth visit.

Top 10 reasons to go with Baja Discovery Tours:
10. Angie and her family have owned Baja Discovery for decades and scrutinize every detail with great care.
9. Just getting to camp is an experience in itself. Views from the chartered planes were breathtaking!
8. The camp is in the BEST location-next to the whale watch zone. No camp is closer!
7. Only camp in the bay that is 100% ecofriendly. When the season ends the entire camp is disassembled with only the seashells remaining.
6. Comfortable beds/tents, solar showers and peaceful silence to hear the whales breath at night.
5. The staff is hired locally giving the fisherman/families a source of income when fishing season is closed in San Ignacia Bay. They treated us like family.
4. Exceptional food that was authentic and delicious. Handmade tamales, fresh caught oysters, fish tacos on locally made tortillas and blue crab from the bay in our salad! They will cater to everyone's dietary needs.
3. Kayaking in the mangroves and seeing puffer fish, sting rays and many bird species. Tide pool walks with naturalists where we saw tiny octopi, hermit crabs and other micro creatures.
2. Informative nightly talks relating to whales and the local life on the Baja.
1. Most importantly the beautiful grey whales! This may be the only place in the world where you can touch a whale and even its baby if you're lucky. It is a lifechanging experience that I hope to return to again and again!

Unbelievable experience. So many whales! Excellent camp, basic but clean and comfortable. Staff were great. Food prepared fresh daily, very tasty. Fresh caught fish daily. I can think of NOTHING to complain about. Seamless transfers across the borders both ways. If you want to get up close and personal with whales, this is the company to go with, no long boat rides into whale area, they are right there on the line.

Wonderful is the best word to describe this indescribable experience. Observing and interacting with the gray whales brings childlike wonder to all ages, warmth, and revitalizes your connection with Nature.

All you need to know is that Baja Discovery is the best place for this experience. I would go even if I couldn't get a spot with Baja, but Baja has a prime location closest to the permitted whale-viewing area, you can just sit there and observe whales spy hopping and breaching (some close by), knowledgeable, fun, and accommodating staff with many from San Ignacio and marine biology experts, and all the glamping basics.

Finally, the experience is truly indescribable in words. I guarantee that whatever your expectations, this trip will exceed them.

Our Baja Discovery experience took our breath away. It was much more than what we imagined it would be, and we had pretty high expectations. The first day being "off the grid", with sun showers, very clean outhouses, no internet, I did a bit of a gulp. (However, you can charge your phone for photos). After a couple of days we wanted our trip to be extended...as we were loving every minute. Just a few of the highlights:
1. We loved the boat trips to commune with the whales. Very safe boats, experienced boatmen, knowledgable guides.
2 .The dedicated , extremely competent staff were fun, engaging and very accommodating.
3. The authentic Mexican food was fabulous and there was plenty of it.
4. The kayak trip in the mangroves, the tides walks, the desert walks, all magical.

We were amazed at how Baja Discovery logistically made our adventure a seamless one. The company has to bring everything in by boat---there are no roads. Yet every day, the management and staff made it all seem so easy, so comfortable. They rolled out the red carpet and made our vacation one we will never forget.
