Amazing trip thanks to the guides, staff and boatmen!
Feb 2020
Although the Whales are certainly the highlight of any trip to the lagoon, The people are what make it happen. From the expert boatmen to the wonderful chef and her staff, they all worked together as a family to make us comfortable and safe. They do so well, it looks effortless, but I know that is because they are good at their jobs and like the work they do.

I also want to thank our guides, naturalists and "instant friends," Margarita, Charlotte. Pam and David who were always "on" from the moment we arrived until after we left, I'm sure. What a great group of friendly and sincere people who have the most difficult job of all; making 20 different people from all walks of life have an enjoyable experience outside their own comfort zone. They met and exceeded everyone's "needs" and satisfied most of their "wants." They are expert at handling difficult personal situations with care and respect. These are people who I am glad I have met and wish we could spend more time together.

Whale watching - excellent
Feb 2020
Great trip - just 5 of us in the boat. Really good captain who clearly understood the whales. Spent 90 minutes in the whale area. These guys know what they are doing and are kind to the whales. They do not chase them. Great experience. Thank you.

Truly spectacular experience
Feb 2020
I expected the whale watching to be amazing and it was. What I did not appreciate beforehand was how amazing the staff would be at making the experience special. The staff were knowledgeable, friendly, and fun to be around. In addition to cooking amazing food, they also identified additional activities for us to do in the afternoons, after the morning whale watch. For example, one day we went to a local oyster farm. The following day, we helped scientists weigh and measure endangered sea turtles. I cannot recommend Kuyima enough.

Great Whale Watching Experience
Feb 2020
Did a day trip from Santa Rosalia on a cruise ship excursion and had a great time. We stopped at the Kuyima shop in San Ignacio and walked around the beautiful town before going out to their camp on the bay.

Whale watching was good - we saw several mothers and babies up close and got sprayed. No Spyhopping or touching but it was still a great time.

Had a great lunch at the camp. The staff were all friendly and helpful.

Make sure to bring water shoes / sandals as we had to walk back to shore at low tide and the rocks/shells were very rough and sharp. We were able to board the boat from shore going out but due to low tide upon return two hours later we had to walk about 50 yards in shin deep water.

We want to go back and spend a few days at their camp on the bay.

Lifetime Experience Cave Painting Canyon Tour
Jan 2020
I'm still in awe of this trip. We went on a 3 day trip into the canyons to look at the 10,800 year old cave drawings and petroglyphs. The trip included our Mules to ride on and Donkey's to haul in all of our camping gear and food. We only needed to show up with our clothes, back pack and a canteen for water. This group supplied everything else.

The crew was comprised of Kuyima guides and local guides who's land we were hiking into. Raul, Arturo, Chuy, Narry, and Carlos were absolutely amazing and took great care of us while educating us of the wildlife, how to ride mules, and the history of the canyon and cave drawings.

We were with a crew of late 40's and early 50's. It does require some hiking and you'll want to prepare for it. Although one of our crew did very little preparing and he did fine, just a little sore.

I will do this tour again in the future to experience it with some of my younger family members now that I have done it myself.

I was also a little hesitant booking this and giving a deposit but after seeing the reviews I felt better about it. After the trip the exact amount of deposit was charged to my credit card. Maria was lovely to deal with on the booking end.

I can't say enough good things about this tour and this tour company.

AWESOME!!! This is an experience of a lifetime.

I highly recommend the whale tour. You are up close and personal with these magnificent creatures. They come right up to the boat, nudge it, wait for you to pet it and then they become playful when they spray water on you! One of the best experiences I have ever had!

Away from the crowds

I took a 4 day 3 night package with Kuyima to see and pet grey whales. I believe they offer 3 choices of accommodation: camping, cabanas, or lodge. I took the cabana type. The accommodation was a lot more comfortable than I had imagined - the wooden hut on stilts is simple but spacious; and has a lot of places to hang your clothing, stow your luggage, etc.
And the guides: Cesar was apparently the guy running the cabanas and he was great. Magui and Edith were his able helpers who were both very friendly, spoke good English (important to me because my Spanish is malo), and fun to be with.
The Kuyima cabanas was located in a very peaceful shore on the San Ignacio lagoon - even on a windy day with a rough sea, if you are on land you'll feel a sense of serenity. Kuyima schedules one whale watching trip in the morning everyday, but in the afternoon I prefer to stay on land because it was such a nice place. The guides would take us on mangrove walk, desert walk, salt flat visit, etc. in the afternoon, I recommend you take all of those in.
As for the whales, what can I say, it was such humbling experience. We humans hunted them to near extinction only half a century ago, but now these creatures have forgiven us and voluntarily come near us. Only Jesus is more forgiving than these animals.

Guide didn't speak to us in English or Spanish and just wanted to get back. No whale info given.Never completely stopped
Mar 2019 • Family
Our guide didn't tell us anything about the whales and often wouldn't stop when there were whales nearby. He never stopped the boat completely so that the whales could come up if they wanted. We tried to speak to him in Spanish to tell him to slow down but he wouldn't. He was talking to his friends about getting back and drinking beers and so on the way back wouldn't stop near another boat that was petting some whales. There was only one boat and there was no reason not to stop. we didn't touch any whales and he almost hit one on the way in he was going so fast. We complained to the manager and they didn't want to do anything or offer anything so the next day we went with Antonios with Danielle who was so knowledgeable and respectful and spoke great English. We went straight out to pet some friendly whales and we had a great time with him. His company is family owned and has been around for many years. I highly recommend Antonios! Great food as well.

WHALES...WHALES...WHALES...
Mar 2019 • Couples
The Laguna San Ignacio is the only place on earth where humans can interact with California Gray whale calves. There are other areas like Guerrero Negro or Magdalena Bay, but the mom whales keep their babies as far from the pangas as possible. Kuyima's operation is polished and sure. Their boats and drivers are first rate. They really understand the whales and make every effort to get their passengers close for a personal encounter. This was my 38th trip to pet whales and it won't be my last!!!
