It takes pretty much time. We made it from Hanoi to Cao Bang in about 7 hours and 30 min by local vietnam bus. The distance is not that far, however, because of the curvy mountain roads, ups and downs, it takes a time. We arrived at the Cao Bang and stayed there 2 nights. On the second morning we went to the bus station and took a local bus to Ban Gioc fall. It took about 2h or 3h more. Anyways, it was worth it. It is one of the most amazing nature creations I have seen so far. After then we asked for a motorbike transfer to Nguom Ngao cave, which is also nice place to visit. From there we took a nice walk back to the road to Cao Bang and catched the bus right on the road back to the city. We were there on Saturday I guess, so the last bus leaves about 16:40 from Ban Gioc to Cao Bang.

First day; I left Hanoi in the morning about 8am and arrived Cao Bang in the evening about 5pm. Second day: Visit waterfall and the cave. Third Day: Late morning return Hanoi by evening. Having 2 weeks in Vietnam ; you should try squeeze it into your itinery as I reckon the waterfall and cave venue are significantly unique.
