I spent 2 weeks in San Miguel and made the mistake of scheduling Joseph's history and culture tour at the end. It was a fantastic overview of the many churches and cultural phenomena that had dominated the sights and sounds of the City throughout my time and I wish I had learned it all earlier! I also would have liked to have done another tour with Joseph perhaps of the cemeteries had I had more time.

It was truly a pleasure to be able to pick the brain of someone so knowledgeable, and I highly recommend his tours. He even gifted us books at the end which I fully intend on reading.

An absolute treat!

We strolled the streets leading to the cemetery entrance while Joseph introduced us to the mixture of cultures that shaped San Miguel and local religious practices. Once in the cemetery we saw visual confirmation of the cultural and religious practices all of which brought greater understanding of the centuries of adaptation, absorption, and adoption of portions of all the cultures. Joseph conveyed information with pertinent details and humor. Just as we were about to leave, a funeral procession carrying the casket entered to music provided by a band. We were very glad to have signed up for the tour and came away with much greater cultural understanding. At 500 pesos per person it was money well spent.

We enjoyed and learned a lot during our History and Culture tour with Joseph. The stories behind different figures make you appreciate this city way more. I highly recommend this tour for anyone who wants to know more about this city and its culture.

We had been reading Joesph Toone's posts on Facebook and articles about San Miguel de Allende in various forms. A few of us finally read one of his books and we felt we had to take one of his tours. Four of us THOROUGHLY enjoyed the delivery, content and timing of his tour. After almost a decade of visiting SMA and a few sites out of town...Joseph enhanced our understanding of symbols and ceremonies. Gracias Joseph AND to Tony as well, your safe and capable driver.

We loved our historical walking tour with Joesph! I emailed with him before our trip and he was so kind and easy to work with; he accommodated a private tour that fit our schedule. We had a 9 month old fighting a nap with us and he was wonderful at adapting when we needed to pause and sit.

I loved learning about the religious history of the city and how much it impacts modern traditions.

San Miguel Allende is magic and no one pulls its stories "out of the hat" like Joseph. We laughed, we marveled and were touched by all the details of this city through his eyes and our own. (Hint: You'll be so glad you booked an intimate tour rather than those herded, miked ones. No offense to those.)

What a lovely introduction to this magical town in the Highlands of Mexico! Joseph is warm, friendly, articulate, intelligent and passionate about the culture, religion and history of San Miguel. I was fortunate to have a solo tour with him and he patiently answered my many questions. We toured several churches and he explained the significance of the art, architecture and its relationship to San Miguel. The tour was nicely paced and I never felt rushed. The terrain in SMA is hilly with uneven surfaces so this needs to be taken into consideration if one has mobility issues. I highly recommend this tour especially toward the beginning of your visit to SMA so that one can better appreciate the sights when exploring on your own.

I had been to San Miguel twice before this visit, and thought I knew a bit about the city. Taking a tour with Joseph Toone this time around, though, was a great decision. Joseph deepened my knowledge of things I knew only superficially, and introduced me to facts and details that I was completely unaware of regarding San Miguel's art, architecture, religious fusions, and cultural practices. Not only that, his introduction to certain topics has motivated me to learn more on my own even about things not related to San Miguel de Allende! His presentation is warm and friendly, but at the same time professional, and I would highly recommend you take a tour with him whether it's your first time to the town or you've already been here once or several times before.

Joseph took us on a beautiful early morning walk up through amazing tiny alleys and streets of SMA I had never navigated before. The highlight was seeing Sterling Dickenson's old home and as luck would have it, we were able to peek inside, which took us back many many years into SMA's distant past overlooking the property where he harvested his orchids. Then we ambled up over the hill out into the compo, which this time of year is a very lush experience as the rainy season comes to an end, passing by the crown jewel of SMA, el Charco, or the amazing botanical gardens. Thanks to Joseph's vast knowledge of the history of not only SMA but Mexico itself, we learned so many details about this region. A visit to SMA should not go without signing on with at least one of his tours!!

We greatly enjoyed the two hour historical and culture walking tour with Joseph. It felt a bit like we were in a Mexican Dan Brown novel as history unfolded and layers on layers of hidden symbolism came alive.

Joseph is a wonderful story teller with a humble and friendly demeanor that was constantly radiating goodwill to all who crossed our path. It was clear how much he loves this place. His fountain of knowledge on all things San Miguel De Allende seemed inexhaustible. Thanks Joseph!
