This is a very interesting place. Fantastic views especially if you take the hike through the woods to the canyon. Our tour operator had a young boy take us to the cliff edge. Not for the faint of heart or those with limited mobility. We felt we had to tip him extra for danger pay :)

Natures always give us some surprises, this fallic stone formations were called "fallic valley" by the Tarahumaras (in their native language) , when Spanish arrived, the rename them as monk valley.
here are also more interesting rock formations nearby.

This is one enchanting area -- from the verdant valley floor with its grazing cattle to the fantastic pillars and rock formations that warrant time to be still and listen. Making a journey by mountain bike (a very easy ride on dirt road .... unless you aren't acclimated to elevation) or by moped (ideal so you can get it all in) and you get to step back into time on an actual "reservation" where the Tarahumara families still reside and eek out an existence. From the cave dwelling homes to simple clapboard style homes you will witness a people untouched by time. Imagine visiting the Pensylvania countryside and the Amish communities as work. A very similar experience. But tread lightly in the communities ... this is their home of which we must pay a few to visit.
Be aware that there are two areas to collect donation for right to pass. The first is an official toll booth just past Creel's cemetary and the other about 1km from the opening to the Valley of the Monks. The fees are around $20p per adult .... trust me it's worth every penny.
Bring tons of small bills so you can buy trinkets at the various sites ... or at least bring gum or suckers for the kiddos standing near some of the attractions. Yes, it's kinda sad you can't see it in pristine form ... but this is their form of income. And since we went when no school was in session, and since we were traveling as a younger family, many of the kids wanted to hear our story.
You could easily see Valley of Monks, Frogs and Mushrooms along with Lake Arakara in a day by bicycle and about 4 hours via moped.
Be sure to ask about the family living in the cave just beyond the official toll booth. They invite you into their cave home, leave a small donation, take some pics, and if you are lucky there would have been rain the night before so water falls down the center of the cave. Epic pic and dwelling shot. But be very respectful of their culture and don't barge up the hill into the cave. Wait at the small transtion area about 75 yards away. If a women comes out from the mouth of cave and make eye contact you are golden to come over for a visit. No woman No go. Just a suggestion.

We arrived there in a motorcycle tour. Excellent tour, you get to see a lot of sites and the trails are incredible. You can hike around. If you get on a tour you will only have half an hour or so in the site. But you can easily get a tour that can let you have a snack there. The views are incredible. Try to get there early to avoid crowds. We were there at about 9am.

We drove a 4 wheel drive on many roads in the back country, including all the way to the Valley of the Monks. The indians are an interesting group but not friendly at all. They don't like their pictures taken, are very private. But there is lots to see if you like nature. See my review of Batopilas for more info. But don't let that keep you away. It is worth seeing and be sure to go down the road to Basaseachi and Cusamare Falls. Not sure how they are in the dry season but when we went the water was flowing and they were tremendous!

We stopped here for a short stop on a driving tour, it's an easy bike-ride from Creel if you're younger than we are (70). Lots of stuff to see on the way here from Creel, and worth an hour or so stop on a bike ride.

The rock formations were very interesting. The area was well kept and entry was reasonably priced. We would return.

This was our first hike in the Copper Canyon region. Get a ride out from the town of Creel and then hike up and around, eventually finding a lookout over the beginning of the canyon. The hiking isn't too difficult (unless, of course, you've just arrived from sea level). We hiked near dusk, and the light was fantastic!

Amazing place to visit, it's hard to believe the shapes of the stones were not man made. Nature at it's best!

How do you get There from Creel?
Written January 17, 2018
our small tour operator hired Javier who took us in his van....he was awesome but only speaks Spanish. I think you can find others who will take you for a daily trip.

How do you get to the Valley of the monks in Copper Canyon
Written January 17, 2018
they are just 5 km to the east of the town of Creel (not in Copper Canyon). On Google earth search valle de la fertilidad (or you can find the formations at the end of the road you see going east which starts at the south end of Creel
