With an extraordinary long working life of about 70 years, his lifetime’s output was prodigious. A lover of travel, he visited many European countries, spending many years in France.

We loved his paintings and sculptures. His 1902 Study for a Mountain Climber is a sun-bathed portrait of a well-attired young woman. A dramatic picture of glass blowers is fiery in its intensity.

In sculpture, we thought The Great Relief was superb. In marble and gilded bronze, it apparently symbolises various levels of happiness, from the lowest and short-lived to the apogee of aesthetic joyfulness.

Life on the Paris Quays shows city life in 1890 with horse drawn cars and pedestrians. A number of his self-portraits from the 1930s include one of him in his artist’s smock. We were taken by his great Riddle of the Heavens - Trilogy of Titian Dying.

Michelle Bourret, painter, dancer and Willumsen's partner for about his final 30 years is beautifully portrayed. Joyously dancing and with him in a 1946 photograph.

His beach paintings are full of life and delight. Study for Sun and Youth 1904 is a fine exemplar.

It was interesting to see the temporary exhibition of Edvard Munch’s endeavours with ‘selfies’, dating from the early 1900s.

While I lived in Denmark I drove by this museum but never visited. This year we finally made it on a rainy day. This was really nice. Learned a lot about Willumsen.
If you like art museums this is a great visit. Highly recommended. Parking limited but few visitors. I’m sure you can get there by public transportation as well.

You may see very famous art in the big museums in central cities. This is a rather small museum in a Danish village, but still, some of the works are by famous artists. What makes the musesum most interesting is that most of the paintings are said to be by very famous artists according to the judgements of the painter who gave the name to the museum: J.F. Willumsen! This means that the paintings postulated to be by Rembrandt, Rubens and other world-class painters are possibly not! But still, the collection is very good, and absolutely worth a visit.

Willumsen was primarily a painter but also worked as sculptor and with ceramics among other stuff. He is widely known for many works. Den frie udstillingsbygning at Kongens Nytorv are among his works. Lived most of his life in France. At the museum many of his diffenrent works can be seen.

I am really surprised that this museum was not mentioned in several touristguides. What a great painter and what a nice museum to visit.

The town in itself is not special, but the museum makes it worth a visit.

The cafe has only soda and several candy bars. And we could not find a place to eat nearby. But what does that matter if you can enjoy the art of Willumson.

This is the museum of the Danish multi-artist JF Willumsen, who lived from 1863 to 1958, and thus following the developments in Modern Art. He lived most of his life outside Denmark, among other in France and Italy, but he is not as well known internationally as e.g. the Skagen painters (Krøyer, Ancher) or Hammershøi. He worked very systematically with colours, however without documenting his own colour theory. For the time being (until august 2016) the museum has an excellent special exhibition focusing on Willumsens radical use of colours. It has been made in cooperation with a paint company and in several of the exhibition rooms the walls have been painted in a colour matching the colours of the paintings in that particular room. This gives a fresh and new impression of the work of Willumsen. The museum can be reached from Copenhagen by S-train (appr 50 minutes) and after that a 20 minute walk. The museum has an informative website in English. When visiting the museum also remember to walk to the nearby fjord with the bridge.

It was our first visit after a long run, and it was for the exciting special exhibition with Martin Bigum. It sounded a bit far-fetched, perhaps, but the exhibition is really nicely set up - and the two artists actually have more in common than you might think. Beautiful museum and reasonable entrance fee!

A beautiful and very interesting exhibition.
Willumsen and Bigum dress each other and their style is somewhat similar. Really worth a visit.
