It's a nice place which is not so easy to achieve if you are not an experienced hiker.
But never mind, it's worth your efforts, so it's a must when visiting Monte Isola.
In theory, you can do the way by foot. My advice is to take a bus to Cure, and then you'll still have enough way uphill. It's not a regular bus and there is no timetable for it. It's a kind of a shuttle bus which goes up and down. The bus stop is some 5 min to the North from the port in Peschiera Maraglio (on the lakeside).
Don't forget to check also the timetable for the ferries, the trip to the yop of tje mountain can take 2-3 hours (if you go by bus).
Good luck in climbing!

This makes a great destination for a hike from the bottom (main) road of Monte Isola. It's a well cared-for trail if you like a challenge (definitely a climb), but you also can walk up the road or take a bus from the centre. It's a worthwhile stop because the sanctuary is lovely, and the view is remarkable. There's a picnic area at the base of the entry to the sanctuary well equipped with picnic tables and a toilet (they ask you not to eat at the sanctuary itself). I highly recommend going here!

We recommend setting off early if it’s going to be a hot day. We were glad we were wearing boots and had a hiking pole - even just to manage the blackberry bushes and uneven paths. We took path#2 to get there and path #1 to return. It can be challenging in some sections but lots of people were doing it with a range of ages and footwear. Do bring some water and there is a tiny shop that sells cold drinks up there.

The Santuario was our hiking goal for the morning at the highest point on Monte Isola with a altitude of 650m latitude, over 400 m altitude climb from the ferry terminal at Carzano. The first section to climb out of the Carzano was quite steep but doesn't last long. Fairly quickly we are able to get to some height. The hike requires a reasonable amount of fitness and is very rewarding with great views and quaint villages to pass through. After an hour and a half we arrived at the Santuario.

Entering into the grounds of this small church we climb the staircase to the terrace surrounding the church and are mesmerised by the stunning views from this high point. This church is dedicated to Ceriola and it is believed that the sanctuary was probably built on the ruins of a pagan temple. We did not enter the church only peering into any small window that we found. Outside the church grounds at the bottom of the stairs there is a small picnic grounds shaded by trees, a relaxing rest stop before venturing down the slope to Peschiera-Maraglio (35 min walk).

It’s a destination, the achievement is in getting there. The frescos are impressive, the building less so. Pleasant views, pleasant path through the woods. Tiny cafe.

We took the ferry from Sulzano to Peschierra Maraglio. When you arrive the port you can find maps/signs that guides you the way.
We took „road1“ upwards. It took us about 2h to reach the peak (we stopped many time to take pictures).
It is possible to buy snacks at the church but we have brought our own sandwiches.
We took “road3/2” back to the port. We walked about 2,5h.

Tipp: good shoes are a must. Also bring enough water and sun screen.

The Santuario is small and nice, but the trail to get there from Peschiera is amazing especilly in the warm fall days.

My husband and I hiked to the top of the mountain, by way of an old mule path. It was well worth the hike because, when you reach the top , the views and the scenery are spectacular !!!

We got the bus up to the little town below the church. It's a pretty strenuous climb especially in the heat. I was drenched in sweat by the time I got to the top. Of my kids only a 12 year old was able to make it. Well worth it though. The views are outstanding.
