Fishing fun
May 2020 • Solo
Not fished here in over three years but a joy to get out of lockdown and enjoy this magnificent lake again. Managed to catch 3 large rainbow trout perfect for eating, but sadly lost a big one. Always loved coming here before, but sadly a little disappointed with the catch and release lake which is overgrown a lot and made fishing very difficult.

Great place to spend a few hours.....

I've just taken up fly fishing to add to me ever increasing selection of hobbies and like everything, it's a bit daunting just to turn up with not much of a clue but eager to press on. Malcolm arranged a lesson for me and in the space of a couple of hours I'd got a basic cast going reasonably OKish and managed to get a credible fly placement. Got a couple of nice fish and was made very welcome by everyone. Will certainly be back once I've got some more kit......

Fishing or not - still wonderful

The weather was decidedly hard to predict but we decided to take a chance on improvement and arrived under a cloudy sky. Easily found, well signposted and sufficient parking. A quick reconnoiter found where the toilets were and a supply of hot drinks (free if you, or one of your party is fishing). As I hv to use a mobility chair I was pleased to see a hardcore surface which went the whole distance of the fishery. The disability toilet was very clean and roomy. Assistance and tips from 'John' and we were off to the Manor lake. The sun had come out and I was content to enjoy the warm and the view whilst another did the fishing. One trout was soon in the bag (a nice rainbow) and time for a drink before trying the far side of the lake. Another trout was in the bag before too long and we made our way to the other lake. The remainder of the day was just as enjoyable and there was something to watching all the time. A swan making it's nest was fascinating. A great day and back to family where the freshly caught fish were cooked and served for our dinner.

Visited Manningford on a whim recently and pleasantly surprised at the quality of the fishing. Came away with just 1 rainbow of just under 8lbs and thoroughly satisfied.

Excellent fly fishing venue.

Visited Manningford Trout fishery on the spur of the moment returning through Wiltshire on the way back home and found it empty of fishermen much to my surprise and delight. It is a well maintained and stocked trout lake, set in an established scenic rural environment, rolling fields all round, the odd goose, a pair of swans, kingfishers and loads of fish! I arrived with my 7'6" brook rod and was consequently loaned a more appropriate 9' rod with the current 'catching' single fly already attached, by a very helpful fishery manager John. There then followed an excellet hour or so of entertaining fishing with loads of 'knocks', a couple of loss's and the 2 fish of my 2 fish ticket successfully landed, one of which a healthy 5lb 6oz. A really good visit, but way too short so I will be going back for a longer session as soon as I can.
