Marking Laozi's "birth"
Aug 2016 • Friends
Huge temple complex in Luyi County, and the place of Laozi's (allged) birth (according to the Shinji, and subsequent tradition). Aside from scholarly questions on Laozi's historicity, this is an impressive monument to an icon of Chinese culture. The site contains a building asserted to be Laozi's family home, and veritable plethora of other Daoist structures, gardens, and museums celebrating Laozi, the Dao de jing, and the regions very ancient history. Luyi is a bit out of the way (the closest train station is in Zhoukou, I bused in from Luoyang), but worth a stop if you're traveling in Henan province. A foundation site for one of the world's great religious and philosophical traditions.
