We went on the recommendation of our camping site wardens. Bit 'off the beaten track', but once we found it (down a 900 Meter dirt track through the forest), we realised that it was a good choice. Only one tour a day (when we were there in June 2017) at 14:00 hrs, but it lasted over 2 hours and was fascinating. The 'guide' is the granddaughter of the original owner and knows the history of each bit of the exhibition, where she grew up as a child. May not be ideal for children, but for adults interested in the local history and 'open air museums' it is a gem. Costs? SEK 50 per head - A bargain. Pick a sunny day to go!! Take a picnic and sit outside on the benches and tables to enjoy your meal.

We had a great few hours being shown around Hultet open-air museum. The setting is incredibly pretty, and there are many beautiful buildings as well as hundreds (if not thousands) of artifacts to admire.
I have to say, I was reluctant at first to have to be led through as part of a group rather than being able to wander around at leisure. But now I totally understand why people can't be left on their own, as there are just too many fragile items that could be damaged or lost if that was allowed.
Tours are usually given in Swedish and German, but we were lucky and, on the day we went, there was a volunteer who spoke great english. (She kept apologising that it wasn't good enough. But it was!)
But what made it extra special for us was the friendly volunteers. Not only do they look after the place very well, they also offered to look after our 8-month old baby so we wouldn't have to carry him around for 2 hours!!! (Obviously I can't guarantee this will be the case everytime, though.)
Finally, make sure you check opening times and days as they are quite limited.
