About
The Royal Golf Club, acclaimed as Troon Golf's "Facility of the Year 2013", is conveniently located just 20-minutes drive from Bahrain's capital, Manama, and the same distance from the Saudi-Bahrain causeway. The Club's 7,102 yard, 18 Hole Par 72 Montgomerie course offers a unique blend of links and desert golf, taking advantage of Bahrain's natural rough desert terrain and combining it with vast manmade lakes. The Championship course is complemented by the Mini Monty 9-hole, Par 3 course which is ideal for beginners in the sport, junior golfers and those wishing to work on their short game. It is a scaled down version of its big brother with par 3 holes ranging in length from 60 to 140 yards. State-of-the-art floodlights are installed on the Back 9 holes of the Montgomerie course and across the whole of the Mini Monty course meaning that golfers can enjoy a relaxing round of golf day or night. Additional facilities at the Club include an Academy with shaded driving range bays and immaculate practice putting greens, a well-stocked Golf Shop, a Country Club with a cooled/heated swimming pool, and several award-winning restaurants.

It depends on what you are looking at. I was a member for two years and have around 170 rounds on the course and maybe another 150 on the wee monty.

The course (disclosure I am a US +2 HCP)

Very challenging from the tips as 1-4 usually plays into the wind and on 4 we are talking US Open par 4 length. The course is not particularly penal outside of the fairway but further off the fairway will penalize you severely. The par 5s with the exception of 14 are almost always a 3 shot hole. The 5th hole was never my favorite as there is no real risk/reward shot (green is far too undulated to want anything less than a full swing with spin into it) but in all it is a great course that is usually in fantastic shape.

The 9 hole par 3 course is fun for practice and a good way to waste an hour. The 8.5 inch optional holes are a joke and should be taken out.

The place of play is pretty glacial on the weekends, comparable to a US muni but after noon it usually empties out. I feel that the majority of the people I see out on the course should not be there or should be playing from the very front tee boxes regardless of sex. So many times I have walked off the course and gone to the range or have walked off the course in a lot worse mood than I came into the round with and not because of my play. It can be soooo slooooow.

The golf staff are very nice from the pros to the guys who work the range and carts. The grass range on weekends is great but the hitting areas are very small (maybe 5 feet front to back) and if the location is up front you are hitting off of a downslope. Without sounding snobbish there are a lot of people who should not be hitting off the grass range and is depressing to see craters taken out of the ground all over the place and not in a line as it should be. I also feel they take up too much space on the range for children to hit 20 yard shots, the space itself being the prime, fullest and flattest part of the range. The chipping area and putting green is filled with crappy practice balls and of course no one picks them up. Maybe it is me as an American but I don't expect the staff to do so rather the people who use them, hey, use your own balls, you shouldn't be putting or chipping with range balls anyway, it isn't good for your game.

Little things like that are why I did not join the club again, there is also no advantage to being a member, you are basically paying in advance for your rounds and that is it. The foot golf thing they do on Saturday or Sunday night is ridiculous. Is this a golf course or a day care-teen rec center-adults wearing football kit looking silly area? The amount of ads around the club are quite annoying as well, I mean the driving range has a sponsor?

The Restaurants and remainder

Are great as is the food, the service fantastic, I can say every employee I have run across is top notch. Wednesday steak night is something to hit up. The pool area is also nice though it can get a bit hot in the summer. The spa for pedicures is pretty cheap and they do a great job, the massages aren't half bad especially after a round.

Bottom Line

You really don't have a choice if you want to play golf on grass and that fact is probably the reason that anything wrong with the place will never change. If you golf you should play at least one loop here, the course is unique and challenging and a great property and the staff is wonderful and cordial. The second shot on 17 from 130 out to a back right pin location is maybe one of my favorite shots to hit on any course on the planet. If you don't end up there then drop a ball and have a go...a leaking fade with the wind or holding a draw against it and into the slope of the green is what golf is all about.

Twice I have made confirmed bookings to play this course. On both occasions I have received advice, via email that the bookings have been arbitrarily cancelled or rescheduled. In both cases the advice was received after we had arrived in Bahrain, leaving no time to make alternative arrangements

So unless you are happy to travel to Bahrain and take the chance that the course will honour your booking, I suggest you bypass the Royal and make a booking elsewhere - there are lots of great courses in Dubai.

Would advise an early tee time as it can get quite hot on the course. The course was quite challenging, but this is coming from a below than average golfer. Greens were well taken care of, but there are quite a large amount of hazards due to the vast amount of sand. Carts were equipped with a GPS to let you know the terrain and yards to centre, a cooler with ice and water, and an option to pick up an icy towel mid-course. Food and beverage cart met us multiple times while golfing and we partook in a beer or two. Links lounge had plenty of beverages to quench your thirst after golfing in the heat! Would advise sunscreen and a hat while playing! The club offers golf shoe and club rentals.

This is a tough links style layout where you really need to play it a few times to know the best lines. A good drive down the middle can end up running off into the rough or bunkers.

Excellent clubhouse and on course facilities.

While it is the only grass golf course in Bahrain it is an enjoyable course. It can be very intimidating for novice golfers as it is very technical and demanding.

The round price is a bit steep too, but when you're a monopoly, you can set your price high.

Health club needs updating, but as a dining and walk around place it is really good. I wish if they would rent out club cars or bikes.

I played this course on Thursday 14th March 2013 and I had a brilliant day. Upon arrival the concierge took my bag and it was taken to the driving range while I parked the car. The staff in the pro shop are very helpful and I paid my green fees and was given full and clear instructions. I had plenty of time to make use of the excellent driving range facility for a warm up and was fortunate enought o be able to take a lesson before going out to play. I would reccommend booking lessons in advance by phone, I was very lucky on this occassion. The team brought a buggy to the starter area for me and I was shown to the first tee and away I went. The course is in immacualte condition and is well marshalled, there is plenty to see in terms of landscape and the course offers plenty for golfers of all abilities. There are places for comfort breaks - much needed when the temperatures get hot during the summer and take plenty of water with you. You get an icebox to keep the water cool and towels to help keep your own moisture at a manageable level!!!
Upon finishing the round my clubs were cleaned and taken back to the conceirge for me to collect after I enjoyed a well earned drink and something to fill the tank.
A very well organised and well run golf course with excellent facilities and a team of people who just want you to have a great day.

The new Royal Golf Course opened on 1st January 2009, located just 20-minutes drive from the capital city, Manama, and the same distance from the Saudi-Bahrain causeway.
Colin Montgomerie has designed a very challenging 18-hole links style championship course, and a 9-hole par 3 Academy course, affectionately known as the "Wee Monty". The back 9 holes of the Championship course and all of the Academy are floodlit.
After your round of golf, relax in Links restaurant or take a snack at Cafe T.

Had a fun time with a group of friends on the range. Had brief training by an expert. We then dined at Slice, as we had arranged a set menu.
The service was truly excellent and the staff were very courteous towards our group. The head Chef was also available to ensure that we were having a good time and dinner. There were different meals available on the menu. We were given an Argentinean menu. We were first offered the Hors D'oeuvres. which was a delicious chicken liver pate. Starter Choice was Paprika Dusted Crispy Calamari and Grilled Chimichurri chicken salad. I believe all of us went for the chicken salad and we felt that there was insufficient sauce on the salad.
Main Course choices were Grilled Sea Bass, Grilled Beef Tenderloin and Lemon & Garlic Chicken Supreme. The verdict from the group was very basic. The steak was dry. The sea bass was fine, nothing wow about it, and the chicken also received an average review. Over all, there was nothing we would be excited to return to eat again. Further, most ordered the Tiramisu for dessert. It was very thick and not as we expected to be moist and light. Non finished the tiramisu. A couple ordered the Salted Caramel Chocolate. The verdict was not much caramel but all chocolate.
Overall the dinner was average, but the event we held, the group enjoyed the evening.

I have been coming here for quite some time and I can vouch that the service is second to none. A special mention must go to Anthony in the Slice restaurant. One of the most attentive waiters I have ever met
