This was my favorite activity of my time in Tulum. You hire a boat to take you out across the lake and then you put on a life vest as a diaper and float through the most incredible water!

This was my lady's requested tour for her birthday while we were in Tulum. I wanted a tour of Sian Ka'an from a true specialist and not from a large tour company. Aldo fits this requirement completely. Communication prior to the trip was flawless and highly appreciated. I would HIGHLY recommend booking transportation when you book the excursion as it's definitely off the beaten path and you will NOT find a taxi to take you back. If we had had a rental car and a GPS we would have met them there but otherwise use their recommended transport. Nice reef snorkel, excellent lunch, expertly guided tour of the lagoon, mangroves and canals. Aldo isn't reading from some script he's been given... he truly knows and loves this area... you instantly see his understanding and passion for this bio reserve. We were all thrilled with the day.

This is not a review of the tour since I was not actually able to do the tour. I was very excited based on the reviews and the website and submitted the inquiry as directed. I got a response the next day with the availability and pricing. I immediately responded that I would like to book and requesting the online deposit instructions and asking a few clarifying questions. Then I got no response. As we had to change our plans around for the available day I sent another message and then called (got a text reply to the call). I texted about my inquiry and was told they would forward my request to the reservations person. Still no response. Additional texts and emails were sent but nothing until a text message the night before saying sorry the tour was not possible, as I had assumed by that point. I don't know what happened but I was very disappointed in the service. This was supposed to be an anniversary gift, we had rearranged other plans and then we were left with nothing. It still looks like an amazing trip but I recommend trying to book early and wish you luck. Also, the website says they can arrange transportation which I had requested more information on and got no response other than the tour meets at the arch and to be there at 9 so I'm not convinced they actually offer transportation so plan accordingly.

This trip was booked through Price Tours in Playa Car at a cost of 110 USD as opposed to the TUI cost of 196 USD. You should be wearing swimsuits under your clothing and bring towels. Also recommended are water shoes. Pick-up from RIU Palace Mexico was at 06:45. Actual pick up time was nearer 07:00 but there are several hotels in the area all with the same pick-up time so depends where you sit on the route. There is a 45 minute journey on the coach to the Price rendezvous point where you pay the balance for the trip and are allocated a truck for your trip. Better to bring cash if possible as they make a surcharge for plastic, and don’t forget the 3 USD marine tax per person. Bathrooms are scarce on this trip, the one at the rendezvous point is in a disgraceful state but worth using it if you can stomach it. The journey to Sian Kaan begins on a truck, very uncomfortable on a road full of potholes, and that gets more like a dirt track the closer to the destination. The driver has to virtually drive into the heavy foliage at the side of the narrow road at times. More of an adventure than scary. It takes about an hour to reach the nature reserve. You are advised to make a call of nature as the next three hours are on a boat. The options available are bushes on the left for men and further bushes ahead for the lady’s. At this point you can strip to your swimsuit and board the speed boat. It involves walking through knee deep water. They only seat six. A bit of a challenge to board the boat unless you’re a spring chicken as they are not very stable. The guides will help you of course. Once onboard it’s a case of donning a life jacket found on your seat. Each boat has a coxswain and photographer. Before the boats cast off you have to pose for the obligatory photos and offered a sandwich and also a choice of soft drinks or alcohol. Very pleasant you a driven around to see various wildlife. There are a dozen or so of other boats on the same tour. First point of interest is a flight of cormorants, not actually in flight but posing for photographs. The boat moves around so everyone can enjoy them. The next photo stop is for the dolphins. You are basically sailing around in a holding pattern till it’s your turn to move up close with three other boats. Annoyingly difficult to get decent photos as the photographer always in the way trying to get decent shots himself to flog later, The final photo opportunity is for the sea turtles. These are a challenge to snap as they remain sub-surface and only pop up every ten minutes or so and just for a few moments. There is a snorkel opportunity enroute and later swimming in beautiful clear water. Further soft drinks or alcohol are on offer. Eventually you disembark to spend lunch at the little village. Lunch is pretty basic after being used to the all inclusive food of the resorts. Bathrooms here are equally gross. The return journey by truck involves a brief stop to view the crocs at the bridge. There was one on view for us but he mostly disappeared under the muddy water. We would have arrived back at the resort after transfer to bus for about 5pm, but our truck was stopped by police as the driver had been wrongly accused of clipping a car. The ensuing delay resulted in a vehicle change and we arrived back for about 6pm A good tour but the bathrooms need renovation. No excuse for the one at the Price rendezvous area totally disgusting.

Book through Community Tours, which is directly connected with the biosphere, not through third parties. I just came back from taking my third tour with them. Pepe was our tour guide and did a wonderful job. He had a great appreciation of the beauty and significance of the park. I also booked a birding tour directly with Alberto, for an incredible insight into local birds and flora. You can expect a professional guide and a fair price. It was a wonderful experience all three times.
