The ORIGINAL spearfishing adventure in Playa del Carmen. Freediving and spearfishing... a wonderful combination! It is exciting and a real adventure. Our motto, "live to spear and spear to live," could not be more true. If we can't find fish... nobody can.

This was the highlight of my trip to Playa del Carmen by far (and it has been a excellent trip, so that’s saying a lot). I had no experience free diving and in fact, had a bad experience snorkeling a year ago with a different company, so I was both excited and nervous about my first trip back in the open water. Diego was very patient with me and explained every step carefully on the “Beginner” tour. First, we got comfortable with diving, then firing the spear gun— every step was carefully taught before the fishing began.

I was feeling very comfortable and confident in the water in no time at all. I felt 100% safe the entire time both with Diego and on the boat. I didn’t quite get a fish but that did not surprise me give that I was a total beginner— I was SO close to one of fishes that I feel sure if I had booked another day, I could have gotten one. Diego got three big fish, so I had plenty to take home and it was inspiring to watch him dive. Plus, we got to see some really beautiful Eagle Rays, including one who just hung around with us for most of a dive!

Overall, an incredible experience that made me want to spearfish again! If you want to do something a little different on your trip to Playa, this is your company!

Leo is highly communicative and puts his customers first. We had Diego for our tour and felt very taken care of along the way. He caught a very large Barracuda and even offered a portion of the fish to us for lunch. A few tips for others, playa del carmen location was quite choppy on the day. Please bring anti-sea sick medicine! In addition, for those who paid a deposit and are looking to pay the balance on the day, be sure to bring cash as there are transaction costs associated with a credit card swipe.

After reading so many awesome reviews, my boyfriend and I had to check this out for ourselves. We didn't know our schedule before our trip to Playa del Carmen, so waited until we got there to contact Spearfishing Today. The phone number we had was no longer in service, so we sent them an email on Monday. Later that day, we were driving through Playa and figured we'd look for their office to set up a trip. We couldn't find it...but we did find a Truck with the SpearfishingToday.com logo - so we put a note on the windshield. That night we got a reply from our original email AND from the note on the truck. Less than 24 hours later we were on a boat in Cozumel (because it was too windy in Playa) with Hannibal and Nico.

My boyfriend and I have snorkeled before and he had done some shallow spearfishing, but we didn't really know what to expect. The guys were great about explaining everything, telling us what to look for in the water, how to pressurize as we dove down, etc. I had a really tough time getting more than 10 feet underwater, but my boyfriend got down to about 30 feet several times. Even at that, we were in deeper water most of the trip, so we didn't end up catching any of our own fish.

We made about 4 stops around the north/west side of Cozumel. What an amazing view! Our guides were real pros and caught over 10 Trigger fish and 1 small Red Snapper. It was really humbling for my boyfriend and I to see how far these guys could free dive. I was happy just to watch. We saw a few sea turtles, some barracuda, and a lion fish while we were out there.

When we got back to the dock, Hannibal cleaned and filleted 2 Trigger fish and scaled the Red Snapper for us. He gave us the name of a restaurant to take them (Las Tortugas) and we did! Best lunch ever!

Thank you for a wonderful day out on the water!!

Terrible experience. I was in communication with him asking if my son would be able to Spearfishing. At the same time I’ve reached out to multiple other companies and was told no, there was a minimum age. My son was too young. I confirmed with Diego that 8 year-old son would be able to go. He said yes, as long as he can swim. My son is in the water so I thought OK cool no problem. I should’ve listened as to why the other companies were honest and told me there was an age limit and that my son was too young. We got there and it was absolutely way too much for such a young kid. my son wasn’t even able to float around in the big waves and use the snorkel as it was his too intense for a kid and almost for me. Plus the size of the spear guns along for my son to hold. Impossible.. Extremely upset that he felt an average eight-year-old child can do this and you have no problem taking my almost $600. We were on the boat for a total of less than two hours Half of that time was me trying to consult My son because he was so upset that he wasn’t actually able to physically spearfish because of his age/size/ability. I appreciate the honesty of the other companies, and they should’ve taken that as a sign when this third company had no problem signing up such kid, not actually completing the trip, and then taking my money anyways. Shady business.

Dear Mandy. Thank you for taking the time to write this review. Of course we are sorry you feel lied to and ripped off. You and I personally exchanged literally hundreds of messages prior to your trip. When you asked us about your son my answer was straight forward. "When someone is comfortable in the ocean, has snorkeling experience and able to listen to instructions, then its possible, then age is just a number". It was obvios that your son was not comfortable in the ocean at all, was not comfortable snorkeling and did not listen to Diego, our guide at all. Its a shame you name us of being a shady business while we did our very utmost before and during the trip to make it happen. Re the big guns. Diego loaded your son´s gun all the time, So there was 0 inconvenience regarding this. We hope in future your son will reconsider spearfishing.

My family of four went out on a trip in late March. There six of us in all on the trip. I have strong concerns about the safety of the trip and the guiding.

SAFETY
The conditions were very wavy and four of the six got seasick. So much so that one man vomited. I had decided the conditions were too rough for me and did not leave the boat. The other five did, including my kids. My kids are much stronger swimmers than I am, they are teenagers and competitive swimmers, so extremely strong in this regard (moreso than the 4 adults). The adult woman with us got uncomfortably quickly with the waves. I saw her waving for help. The guides did not see her, likely they could not see her over the waves even though they were about 10 yards away. I said something to the boat driver that I think she needs help. He did not respond. I saw her frantically looking between the boat and the guides. Her husband stayed with her and kept her safe. It took at least 5 minutes for a guide to notice she was in distress. Longer for the boat to come pick her up. By the time she got in the boat both her and her husband were completely stressed out. She kept it together 100%, but I could see she was stressed out. I hope she asked for a refund.

When the boat came to get her, she got in, at the same time her husband and my younger son got in. All four of us were pretty miserably seasick. My oldest son and my husband fished for quite some time then they dropped the 4 of us off at a beach to recover. The beach was lovely. We had to swim in about 100 yards to the beach as it was too wavy for the boat to approach closer.

GUIDING
On our boat we had a experienced guide and a novice. After it came down to just my husband and son, then each had a guide, my son the experienced one and my husband the novice. My husband speared one fish. My son zero. (My son is an very experienced fisherman).

My husband felt that the assistance to get them "on fish" was minimal, especially considering the fee paid! The experienced guide did catch two large barracuda. Which was pretty cool. After the trip, the had US take a picture with these fish. We had absolutely NO INVOLVEMENT in catching them. They post these pics on their web site and in their marketing material. This is completely misleading. And no doubt encouraged us to attend.

In the end my son and husband enjoyed themselves, but neither would do it again. My other son and I did not.

CONCLUSION
In my opinion, a refund should have been offered for at least part of the four who enjoyed nothing due to the conditions. I understand completely that they do not control the conditions, but there has to be some thought into canceling when the ocean is not safe for a normal snorkeler. Since there was an issue with the majority of the participants it was clearly a bigger issue than they informed us or planned for. I think half a refund would be fair to all.

I would not recommend this trip based on our experience.

After the port being closed for a couple of days due to strong winds, we were able to do the trip, a bit rougher than normal circumstances, correct, but safe. Otherwise we would not do the trip. The title of your review says it all. Fun for some of us. When you inquired with us for the trip you already stated you yourself most likely would stay on the boat. Your husband and son did great. And were enjoying a lot. Your husband even got his own fish! Shortsighted it is to judge the other 2 guests on the boat and include them in this review. Getting seasick can be caused as well by what you drink the night before/ a couple of hours before the trip, don´t blame us for that por favor. Regarding safety. Our operation is professional and always has safety in the first place. We are in the water so much and we see awful things happening. We keep our captains and guides trained and licensed. I did rehear with the crew. What you state is simply not correct. Regarding guiding. Your husband got a fish for his first time spearfishing. Of course we´d hoped your son would have caught one as well. But it is caught fishing, not catching for a reason. Your husband and son ended up both with their private guide. And 1 of them got a fish. My conclusion is that I fully understand that you won´t give a 5 star review for the whole family it was not as what you would have expected yourself. But stating some things that are absolutely not true about safety, and stating bad guidance while you catch a fish first time spearfishing is in our opinion not nice and not realistic.

I was so excited, after reading every reviewer give this tour a 5 star review, to enjoy this afternoon.
The email communication with the company was excellent. My emails received a response very quickly with helpful answers to my questions.
We were met by Diego at the appointed location. The boat was clean and ready to depart upon Diego's arrival. The boat was loaded in the water so, for those with physical issues be aware. Not a biggie for anyone in my family but, another person in the excursion had knee issues and struggled with the waves in the boarding process.
Diego gave clear instructions, on the ride to the first site, for rules of spear fishing.
What was not communicated, nor did I see in the reviews, was the diving was extensive. One site was 25 feet deep free dive required, 45-55 feet deep and 35-45 feet dive required (respective sites). Of the 7 people on board that day, no one could dive deep enough at the last 2 locations and only 2 could make it 25 feet deep.
The instructor did spear a barracuda at the last location but, no one in the group even shot their spear because of the dive depths required. It was cool to watch Diego dive but, that wasn't the goal of our group.
You were given Diego's fish to take to a local restaurant to have cooked.
The free diving aspect of the excursion made it a really boring snorkeling trip for us. In fact 3 people didn't get off the boat at the last site, due to depth and poor visibility.
Well organized company but, be aware diving at deep depths is required for you to participate.

Thank you for taking the time to review the trip. We are sorry you experienced it as poor, we really do. A next time, please tell your feelings during the trip, so we can explain or adjust, to secure you have a good time. and to avoid a bummer instead. Your husband was given the honor to make the killshot on the Barracuda, I would not particularly call that "a really boring snorkeling trip". The depth to dive to be able to get a fish varies per day. Average saying, if you are able to dive between 10 and 15 ft, you will absolutely have a decent chance to shoot fish. And the majority of people cab, after our instructions. Sometimes we can shoot fish from the surface, so even without diving. Other times the fish stays deeper. So when you dive 25ft as you write, awesome! We did take you 50ft areas. Diego explained: you will see him diving all the way to the bottom, but when you keep diving 10 to 15 ft, you have a good chance to run into so called running fish like Mackerel, Jacks, Barracuda and Triggerfish. These cruise/swim at 20 to 25ft. We take you to areas of where we think the fish might be. For sure we don´t take you to a 50ft area and expect you to dive 50ft on your first spearfishing trip. We want you to shoot your own fish. So we take you to areas where you have biggest chance on that. The last site you mention in your review has a depth of about 20ft. You told Diego you did not get in as you were cold. I hope I hereby explained you the choice of spots as that seemed to be your main point.

We had an awesome time spearfishing. The crew is extremely knowledgeable, safe and funny! They took us to some awesome spots. Aside from seeing many beautiful fish, we also saw a massive Eagle Ray and Sea Turtle that swam with us. Truly an unforgettable experience. HIGHLY RECOMMEND DOING THIS IF YOU ARE IN PLAYA!!!!!!

I was really excited when I booked this trip having been out with Leo a few years back in Cozumel. The booking process was easy and the communication good as always. Diego was a nice guy and the crew seemed okay but we didn't have much communication (not a negative it just didn't happen)

The trip: We booked a beginners trip. There were a few of us that had never been. Diego swam so fast he had litter interaction with the swimmers. I don't think anyone was going slow but it was a really quick pace when you are trying to do your best at spotting fish 30 meters down. There were two guys that opted to get back in the boat, Diego and crew did a fine job getting them back in the boat quickly and with humility.

The fishing: It's called fishing and not catching for a reason. Diego shot at two fish very far down and missed. There was nothing else for any of the swim to shoot at. We swam for three hours but didn't see anything. Not Diego's fault but we do go to have a chance not to watch the guide do it. This trip, no one did anything.

The snack: It would have been nice to get a piece of fruit after salt water in your mouth but the crew forgot.

This is not a cheap tour. While I don't expect to get a fish I do expect guides to put you in a position to shoot one, communicate with you, and ensure you have the best time possible. They fell short on this trip, I would probably go again but not in Playa De Carmen.
