Lovely Chapel, but it wasn't a Mass
We always make an effort to attend Mass while traveling. We've been to Playa several times and always went to the main church on 10th Ave, of which this chapel is kind of an annex. We went to the 12 noon service which was in Spanish. I call it a service, because unfortunately, it wasn't a Mass. I believe the celebrant was a deacon, not a priest, since he did not wear the proper vestments. But most significantly, there was no Consecration, which deacons are not permitted to perform. There were readings from scripture, many of the usual prayers at Mass, but it wasn't a Mass. I mention this to any observant Catholics who might want to attend a true Mass. We did receive the Eucharist. The chapel was lovely, and the people in attendance were obviously devout.

    Cute whitewashed pueblo style Church
Nuestra Senora del Carmen is a beautiful and picturesque whitewashed Catholic Church standing at the end of Quinta Av. Its curved pueblo style facade catches your eye and is a perfect photo op. The Church is at the street side of Fundadores park (which is currently closed for renovations) while opposite it on the beach side of the park is the magnificent Maya sculpture (now only accessible from the beach). The Church is simply, yet beautiful decorated inside, free to enter.

Pintoresca capilla en Playa del Carmen
La capilla es pintoresca, pequeña pero acogedora y se puede visitar mientras paseamos por la Quinta Avenida y el Parque de los Fundadores. La fachada recuerda las típicas iglesias griegas.

This small whitewashed Chapel is located on the seafront in Parque Fundadores, Playa del Carmen.

It's name translates as Chapel of Our Lady of Mount Carmel

A large whitewashed arch stands in front of the Chapel and serves as a bell tower. Above the arch there are two bells these are topped with a single bell in an arched section at the top of the tower.

When we visited here the Chapel was closed, however, due to the glass panel in the main door, we were able to see inside.

Just inside the door we could see a small table with religious items as well as rosary beads for sale.

The aisle is formed by two columns of simple wooden pews, which lead up to altar at the rear of the Chapel.

The altar is a simple table, covered with a white cloth. It stands in front of a large clear glass arched window that stretches from floor to the ceiling. There are views across the Parque and seafront.

Hanging down, from the top of the top of the window, is a large crucifix.

Our plan was to shop on 5th Avenue before attending church. That worked out. However, after shopping for a few hours and finding the church just a couple block away, we needed to go to the bathroom - only to find that the church did not have one (or one that was open) and we had to go across the street to a parking garage and pay to use their facility. That was a disappointment.

A beautiful, atmospheric church. Masses are held in Spanish and English. On Sunday, the English mass is at 10am. Wonderful for photos.

This is a beautiful, small, Catholic church right on the plaza on 5th ave. A great place for a little quiet time. They hold services there as well as the occasional wedding.

A small chapel and great to visit. There are a lot of "people traffic" around which makes it a bit noisy in the perimeter...and vendors, around too.

I've been stopping in to this Church for a little over 25 years. It has been modernized over the years, but the Peaceful feeling that overcomes you when inside has never changed.

This church was lovely. Mass in Spanish with the local residents was a great experience. There are fans all around the church to provide a comfortable environment, even when it is hot outside.
